These 38 dog-house projects show how far people will go to give a dog a place of its own: from a simple ramp that makes a home easier to reach to miniature indoor rooms and elaborate outdoor shelters. The gallery, published by Bored Panda on January 14, 2024, draws many of its examples from the Barkitecture online community. What the 38 dog-house projects have in common
The variety is the point. Some projects create a defined nook inside a home; others give a dog a custom-built outdoor shelter. Across the gallery, the design choices reflect both practical needs and the pleasure of making a space feel personal.

Some of the most useful ideas respond to a particular dog or home: a ramp for Buddy, whose owner says he does not manage stairs well, and a deluxe dog door that appears to blend into the house. Other projects include under-stair dog homes, built-in kennels, dog showers, and feeding stations. These are examples of design possibilities, not universal solutions; a ramp, doorway, or built-in space needs to suit the individual dog and its surroundings.

Access and mobility
Buddy’s ramp is a reminder that the best feature may be one that makes a dog’s everyday route easier. Whether a ramp is appropriate depends on the dog, the incline, footing, and how it is installed; the gallery does not assess those factors or establish a standard design.

Two projects that show the line between charm and shelter
A log shelter with a heat lamp
One caption describes a log dog house measuring four feet wide by seven feet long, with a small heat lamp for winter. Those dimensions and the heating detail are the original poster’s description, reproduced by Bored Panda—not a tested recommendation. A heat source and enclosure need to be considered in the context of the individual dog, installation, and local conditions; the roundup does not evaluate fire, electrical, or temperature safety.

A hacienda for a wet Oregon winter
Another owner describes a hacienda-style shelter as intended for a wet Oregon winter, while joking that the dog would probably be indoors. The joke gets at an important distinction: a shelter can be an affectionate, creative project without serving as a dog’s sole protection from difficult weather.
What to keep in mind when a dog house will be used outdoors
A striking design is not proof that a shelter protects a dog adequately. Weather exposure, entry design, the dog’s size and mobility, and the ability to keep the space clean and maintained all matter. The USDA APHIS inspection report dated March 22, 2022, describes shelter openings with missing or damaged flaps that allowed drafts and freezing conditions to reach dogs. It called for repairing or replacing the flaps to provide adequate protection from the elements. That is a finding about the facility in the report, not a consumer dog-house standard. Heat is another concern for outdoor pets. The American Veterinary Medical Association advises providing shade and unlimited access to fresh water in warm weather and recommends asking a veterinarian about heat-stress risks. Johnathan Lower’s miniature home for Teddy
One especially elaborate indoor project in the roundup is a miniature home made by Johnathan Lower for his golden retriever, Teddy. Bored Panda describes tiny lights, wall décor, a miniature television, a faux fireplace, and a small magazine called Playdog. It reports that a 2021 TikTok post helped bring attention to Lower’s work and that he partnered with PetSmart, Subaru, and Hilton. Those are the roundup’s reports about past exposure and partnerships, not confirmation that any partnership or campaign is current.

Like the rest of the gallery, Teddy’s miniature home is as much a display of affection and imagination as a functional shelter. That is why these projects are fun to browse: they show not one ideal dog house, but many ways people adapt space around a dog’s habits, needs, and personality.
