A secure outdoor cat run—often called a catio—is an enclosed space with a roof and securely fastened boundaries, not an open run. You can adapt one of four layouts to your home: a window box, a house-side enclosure, a freestanding yard run, or a tunnel leading to a separate enclosure. Choose based on your available space and attachment points, then draw and measure the project before buying materials.
Choose a layout that fits your home

1. Window box enclosure
A compact enclosure outside a suitable window can provide a contained perch where a large run will not fit. Plan the connection to the window carefully: the cat needs a secure access route, and the enclosure needs firm attachment to the building. Check that the window can still close or be secured as intended.
2. Attached porch or house-side enclosure
Enclose part of a porch or build a framed structure connected to the house. A cat door or another controlled opening can provide indoor access. This layout can make use of existing walls or porch features, but those features and all new attachment points must be suitable for the loads involved.

Agriculture Victoria’s attached guide gives an approximate 4.8 m × 3.6 m pergola example and a sample list of timber and hardware. That is a construction example, not a recommended minimum or universal cat-run size. The BC SPCA porch plan likewise gives dimensions to adapt to the home.
3. Freestanding yard enclosure
A standalone framed run can work where attaching an enclosure to the house is impractical. It needs a stable base and secure boundaries, including a roof. Agriculture Victoria describes an approximate 1 × 2 metre enclosure as a minimum size per cat when the cats also have regular access to the house. Treat that as the agency’s guidance for its example, not a universal standard; consider the cats’ needs and the space available.

4. Tunnel-linked enclosure
A mesh-covered passage can connect a window or other house opening to a separate enclosure, allowing the main run to sit away from the wall. Measure the route from the intended opening to the enclosure before deciding on the layout. The BC SPCA stand-alone plan includes a tunnel example, but the route and construction need to suit your property.

- Choose the location and access. Pick a spot visible from the home and decide whether the enclosure will attach to an existing structure or stand independently. Sketch the footprint and the cat’s route between indoors and outdoors.
- Measure and draw the build. Make a working drawing, materials list, and cutting list from the actual site dimensions. Ask a local hardware supplier about suitable timber dimensions and fixings; check with your local council whether permits are required.
- Select materials for the design. Common categories include framing timber or metal, galvanized fasteners, suitable enclosure mesh or netting, hinges, a secure latch, and roofing or weather-shelter materials. Choose mesh appropriate to the design and local conditions; the cited guides do not establish one universally suitable gauge or opening size.
- Check timber guidance carefully. Agriculture Victoria’s attached-enclosure guide lists timber, brackets, posts, concrete, galvanized nails and bolts, joist hangers, and battens. It warns against treated pine in that structure because it may prove toxic to cats, especially if used as a scratching post. This is jurisdiction-specific guidance, not a finding that every treated timber product has identical risks.
- Gather tools and protection. The Agriculture Victoria attached guide lists a saw, level, drill, tape measure, hammer, shovel, ladder, eye and hearing protection, and appropriate bits. Your needs depend on the plan and materials. Follow tool and material instructions, and seek project-specific advice where structural spans or attachment points matter.
Build for containment, weather, and daily use
Close escape routes
Use a stable frame and fasten the mesh and other boundaries firmly. Secure the top as well as the sides, close gaps a cat could squeeze through, and check the junctions between the enclosure, house, and tunnel. Trim or cover sharp edges. Inspect doors, latches, corners, and seams for escape gaps and places where a collar could snag. The BC SPCA stand-alone plan shows a safety cord on its latch; it is a detail from that plan, not a universal hardware specification.

Account for local weather and predators
Design the roof for local conditions, including possible snow load. Provide ventilation, shade and rain protection, and a sheltered retreat for cold or wet weather. A sturdy enclosure may still be inadequate in places with large predators unless it is exceptionally robust. Ask for a local assessment rather than assuming that any catio protects against every predator.
Make the space usable for your cat
Add platforms, shelves, scratching and climbing features, and hiding places. For multiple cats, plan separate hiding spots and arrange resources to reduce conflict. Provide fresh water and a litter box, or easy access back inside. Introduce the enclosure gradually and supervise use.
