Avoid scrubbing: it can spread the mess and push residue deeper into the fibers.
How to remove cat poop stains in four steps
1. Lift off the solids
Put on disposable gloves. Use a disposable towel or a plastic scraper to pick up the feces carefully, working from the outside toward the center so you do not spread it or press it into the textile. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) notes that “Solid pet feces is easier to remove than urine” in its Carpet Topics Tip Sheet, “Animal Stains and Odors”.
If the feces is loose or runny, remove as much as possible without rubbing. A wetter mess may have reached deeper into carpet or upholstery, so work gently and expect to repeat the blotting and cleaning steps.
2. Blot with water, not friction
If the spot is damp, press a dry, absorbent white cloth onto it to lift moisture. Then use a separate cloth dampened with clear water and blot the area. Do not scrub or use a colored cloth that might transfer dye. IICRC’s guidance also recommends blotting and clear water during spot treatment.

3. Use a cleaner that suits the material
Carpet or upholstery: First check the maker’s care instructions and test any cleaner on a hidden area. IICRC suggests mixing a few drops of liquid dish soap into a cup of water, lightly misting the spot, and blotting. Repeat if needed, blotting between applications. This is not a universal recipe: a textile’s dyes, finish, or care requirements may make it unsuitable.
Washable clothes: Remove the solids, then rinse or pre-treat the garment as its care label allows. Launder with detergent at the recommended temperature and dry it completely. CDC guidance advises cleaning soft surfaces with products appropriate to the surface and laundering washable items according to the maker’s instructions.

4. Rinse or extract, then dry
After spot treatment, blot with a clean cloth dampened with water to lift remaining soap, taking care not to soak the material. If using a carpet-cleaning machine, follow its instructions and the IICRC’s guidance on rinsing and extraction; extract rinse agents and spotters as directed. Let the area dry thoroughly before allowing your cat back.
Choose the cleanup method for the mess

| Stain is gone but odor remains | Consider an enzymatic pet odor cleaner labeled for the surface, following its directions. ASPCA recommends enzymatic cleaner for pet elimination accidents; it is an odor-treatment option, not a guarantee that every stain will disappear. |
Clean safely around cats and people
Visible soil must be removed before disinfection; stain removal and disinfection are different jobs. If disinfection is appropriate for the surface, use a product labeled for it and follow the directions exactly. Keep your cat away for the period stated on the label, and until treated areas are dry when required. ASPCA Poison Control advises allowing enzyme-based cleaners to dry before pets return; these products can cause mild stomach upset.

Wash your hands thoroughly after handling feces, gloves, cloths, or other cleanup items. CDC advises prompt cleanup of cat waste in the home, disinfection after cleaning when appropriate, and handwashing. Its added precautions for pregnant people and people with weakened immune systems specifically address cleaning litter boxes; they should not be mistaken for a separate stain-cleaning rule. When to stop and call a professional
Get a professional carpet or textile cleaner’s advice if the stain is old or extensive, the upholstery is valuable or delicate, or a gentle treatment does not work. IICRC cautions that food dyes can resemble fabric dyes, so some color change may be unavoidable. Do not escalate to stronger household chemicals without confirming they are safe for that specific material; hydrogen peroxide, for example, can alter dyes.

If your cat keeps pooping outside the litter box
Cleaning the stain will not address why it is happening. If accidents recur, arrange a veterinary assessment to check for medical issues. ASPCA recommends veterinary follow-up for litter-box problems and an enzymatic cleanser for pet accidents; see ASPCA: Litter Box Problems.
