SharkSmart issued a shark ADVICE for 40 Mile Beach, south west of Karratha, on 27 August 2024 after a whale carcass was reported near shore. The City of Karratha closed the beach while the carcass was removed. It reopened the following day, but SharkSmart advised extra caution because residue could still attract sharks. This is a historical alert, not evidence of current shark activity or an active warning.
What happened at 40 Mile Beach
At 8:34 am on 27 August 2024, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) reported a whale carcass to authorities. At 9:50 am, SharkSmart issued an ADVICE because the carcass could attract sharks closer to shore. The City of Karratha closed the beach to water users, while DPIRD and other agencies monitored the situation. SharkSmart’s alert said it was possible the carcass could lead to sharks coming close to shore along that stretch of coast; it did not report a confirmed shark sighting or an attack.
When the beach reopened
In an update at 11:20 am on 28 August 2024, SharkSmart reported that the City had reopened 40 Mile Beach after the carcass was removed. The update still recommended additional caution: residue from the carcass could continue to attract sharks. The alert’s closure and reopening describe conditions at that time, not the beach’s status today.
What to do before visiting
- Check SharkSmart alerts and Surf Life Saving WA updates for current information before entering the water.
- Obey any closure or directions from City rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers, or Surf Life Saving WA.
- Report a shark sighting to Water Police on 9442 8600, as directed by SharkSmart.
Forty Mile Beach is also listed by the City of Karratha as a camping area 56 km south of Karratha, at Forty Mile Beach Road, Gnoorea WA 6714. The City advises that facilities are limited, so visitors should bring drinking water and take their rubbish away.
