A 47-year-old man from Cape Coral, Florida, was gored by a bison in Yellowstone National Park on May 4, 2025, after approaching it too closely. The National Park Service reported that he sustained minor injuries and was treated by emergency medical personnel.
The incident happened at approximately 3:15 p.m. in the Lake Village area. In its May 7 release, the NPS said the incident was under investigation but provided no further details.
What happened in Yellowstone
According to the NPS release, the man approached a bison too closely in the Lake Village area, and the animal gored him. The NPS described his injuries as minor and said emergency medical personnel treated him.
The release does not describe how close he was, explain what he was doing, or provide a more detailed sequence of events. It also does not report whether the man was hospitalized or whether the bison was subsequently managed.

The NPS said this was the first reported person injured by a bison in Yellowstone in 2025 as of its May 7 release. The agency also reported two such incidents in 2024 and one in 2023. These are reported incident counts, not a measure of individual risk or a final total for 2025. Read the National Park Service incident release.
Why bison can be dangerous
The NPS says bison defend their space when threatened, are unpredictable, and can run three times faster than humans. The agency also says bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal. A bison that appears calm is still a wild animal; do not approach it.

How close can you get to a bison in Yellowstone?
The NPS instructs visitors to stay more than 25 yards (23 meters) from bison and other large animals. For bears and wolves, the recommended distance is at least 100 yards (91 meters). If wildlife approaches, move away to maintain the recommended distance. See the park’s wildlife safety guidance.
How to watch bison from a safe distance
Observe bison from well beyond the required distance. Binoculars can help you see wildlife without approaching, but they do not replace the need to keep your distance and follow park instructions.
