5 Effective Mouse Trap Baits—and How to Choose the Right One

Chunky peanut butter is a practical first choice, but the mouse’s familiar food and trap placement can matter just as much. Compare five supported bait options.

Chunky peanut butter is a practical first bait to try: the CDC recommends a small amount on a snap trap’s bait pan, and UC IPM describes peanut butter as popular and attractive to house mice. But there is no established universal winner. A mouse may be more interested in food it already encounters nearby, and placement often matters as much as bait.

These five options are a practical roundup, not a scientifically measured ranking. Choose a small amount that suits the mouse’s likely food sources and the trap you are using.

Five practical baits to try

  1. Chunky peanut butter

It is a convenient starting point: the CDC recommends a small amount of chunky peanut butter, and UC IPM describes peanut butter as popular and attractive to house mice. Its sticky texture can make it harder to remove from the trigger without setting off the trap. Avoid it where someone with a peanut allergy could come into contact with it.

  2. Chocolate

Illinois public-health guidance includes chocolate candy among suggested baits. Use a small piece or smear, following the trap’s instructions.

  3. Dried fruit

Illinois guidance also lists dried fruit. Use a small piece, and secure it if the trap allows so a mouse cannot carry it away without triggering the mechanism.

    #1 Best Overall
Tomcat Attractant Gel, Bait for Mouse Traps and Rat Traps, 1 oz.
    • ATTRACTS MICE AND RATS: Tomcat rodent attractant gel attracts both mice and rats and can enhance the effectiveness of any mechanical rodent trap
    • MOUSE TRAP BAIT GEL: This bait gel for mechanical mouse or rat trap is an ideal alternative to cheese or peanut butter
    • NON TOXIC TO CHILDREN AND PETS: Formula tastes irresistible to mice and rats while being non-toxic to children and pets
    • ENHANCES RAT AND MOUSE TRAP EFFECTIVENESS: Use this mouse attractant gel as trap baiting for mice traps or rodent traps with the no-mess bottle spout
    • PRE-MIXED AND READY TO USE BAIT: This 1 oz. bottle of Tomcat Attractant Gel is pre-mixed and ready to use with Tomcat mouse or rat traps
  4. Bacon or another familiar meat

Illinois guidance suggests a small piece of bacon; the CDC names mutton fat. Either can be worth trying if it matches food the mouse is likely to find nearby or is already eating.

  5. Cotton or dental floss

This is a nesting-material lure, not a food. UC IPM notes that reproductive females may be motivated to build nests and that cotton wool or dental floss can work as a lure; UC ANR also describes using small bits of cotton or floss. It may be useful when food is plentiful or nesting behavior is relevant.

Tomcat with Bromethalin Bait Chunx Pail, 4.25 lbs.
    • WHERE TO USE: Use these mouse and rat bait blocks indoors or outdoors; if applied where children, pets, and non-target animals may have access, bait blocks must be placed inside tamper-resistant bait stations
    • RODENT BAIT BLOCKS FOR PROFESSIONAL APPLICATORS: Tomcat with Bromethalin Bait Chunx are bait blocks for agricultural use and professional applicators that kill rats and mice
    • CONTAINS 1 OZ. BAIT BLOCKS: This 4.25 lb. pail of Tomcat with Bromethalin Bait Chunx is filled with 1 oz. rat and mouse bait blocks for use with bait stations (sold separately) or as indicated per label directions
    • KILLS MICE AND RATS: Norway rats, roof rats, and house mice cease feeding after consuming a toxic dose; each block kills up to 12 mice (based on no-choice laboratory testing)
    • FOR USE WITH BAIT STATIONS: Bait stations are mandatory for outdoor, above ground use; bait must be applied within 100 feet of man-made structures

Nuts and pet food are other options mentioned in university guidance. They may be a better fit than one of the five choices if they are foods the mouse already encounters.

How to choose and place bait

  • Start with what the mouse knows. If you can identify food it has been eating, try that rather than assuming a standard bait will be more appealing.
  • Use a small amount. Put only a little on the trigger plate. Too much can be eaten or carried away without releasing the trap.
  • Prioritize location. Set traps where you see signs of activity and along likely travel routes, such as beside walls or other cover. The CDC, UC IPM, and UC ANR all emphasize placement near activity or routes.
  • Use the right trap. Choose a mouse-sized snap trap and follow its package directions. The CDC recommends snap traps for home control.
  • Keep it safe and check it. Place traps and bait where children and pets cannot reach them, and check traps daily, as the CDC advises.

What the available guidance can—and cannot—tell you

Public-health and university guidance supports several food baits and nesting materials, but does not establish a head-to-head ranking or catch-rate advantage for these five choices. The best option depends on what the mouse is encountering, whether the bait stays on the trigger, and where the trap is set. UC IPM says broad trigger plates have higher catch rates, but its guidance does not give a numerical effect size.

Rank #3
Tomcat Rat & Mouse Killer, Child & Dog Resistant, Disposable Station, 8 oz.
  • PREFILLED RAT AND MOUSE BAIT STATION: The Tomcat Rat & Mouse Killer, Child & Dog Resistant, Disposable Station is a bait station pre-filled with one bait block that kills up to 10 rats (based on no-choice laboratory testing)
  • RESISTANT TO TAMPERING BY CHILDREN AND DOGS: These rat and mouse stations are weather resistant and tamper resistant by children and dogs
  • INDOOR AND OUTDOOR BAIT STATION: For killing mice and rats, place the bait stations in areas where rodent activity has been noticed, such as basements, garages, behind appliances, inside cabinets, or home exteriors
  • CLEAR LID FOR EASY MONITORING: The rat and mouse station features a clear lid for easy bait monitoring, and can be disposed of once rat or mouse activity comes to an end
  • DISPOSABLE STATION: Tomcat Rat & Mouse Killer Disposable Station is pre-filled and ready-to-use for rodent control

If trapping does not resolve the activity, the CDC says a poison bait station or professional help may be considered. Poison baits can harm people and animals, so follow the product label and keep them inaccessible to children and pets.
