A dirt mound with no visible hole may still come from an underground animal: moles can push soil up above tunnels without an obvious opening, and pocket gophers may leave a soil plug offset from the mound. Small piles may instead be earthworm castings or ant nest soil; crayfish chimneys are a location-dependent possibility.
Use the pile’s size and shape along with nearby ridges, openings, plant damage, and location to narrow the possibilities. Mound shape alone cannot identify the animal, so confirm the cause before choosing any control.
Inspect the dirt pile before disturbing it
Photograph the mound and note its size, shape, and surroundings. Check whether you see a plug, small opening, chimney, raised tunnel, surface trail, gnawed plant, or damaged roots. A small casting is different from a substantial excavation, and fresh signs are more useful than old piles.
- Note the size and geometry. Record whether the pile is rounded, volcano-shaped, asymmetrical, fan-shaped, or a small scattering of castings.
- Look for an opening or plug. A gopher plug may be offset from the mound; mole mounds may have no visible entrance or exit.
- Check for nearby runs or trails. Raised, soft ridges can point to mole tunnels. Surface trails without soil mounds may suggest voles instead.
- Inspect plants. Missing plants or damaged roots support a gopher possibility; gnawing on grass, shrubs, or stems may point to voles.
- Consider location and timing. Soil, season, and regional wildlife affect what is plausible. If signs remain ambiguous, contact a local Cooperative Extension office.
Quick comparison of likely causes
| Possible cause | Mound or sign | Other clues |
|---|---|---|
| Mole | Often rounded or volcano-shaped; no visible hole may be present | Raised, soft ridges or a line of fresh mounds; primarily hunts earthworms and other soil invertebrates |
| Pocket gopher | Often a larger, asymmetrical, crescent- or fan-shaped pile; soil plug may be offset | Missing plants or damaged roots; eats roots and fleshy plant parts |
| Earthworm | Small, scattered castings rather than a substantial excavation | Often appears in favorable seasons; does not have a chimney-like form |
| Ant | Small soil pile, sometimes with a tiny entrance | Visible ants; may occur in thinning or bare areas, as well as healthy lawns |
| Burrowing crayfish | Chimney-like mound where the animal occurs | Location-dependent possibility; the chimney form helps distinguish it from castings |
| Vole (lookalike) | Generally leaves surface runways rather than soil mounds | Look for trails and gnawing on grass, shrubs, or stems |
1. Moles can push soil above tunnels
Moles excavate underground tunnels and may create rounded or volcano-shaped piles without an obvious entrance or exit hole. They primarily eat earthworms, grubs, and other soil invertebrates, rather than feeding on garden roots. Their digging can still disturb roots and turf.

Look for raised, soft ridges or a line of fresh mounds, but do not diagnose from shape alone. Soil and conditions affect mound appearance.
What to do about suspected moles
Intervene only if the damage warrants it. Oregon State University Extension describes scissor-jaw traps as an option and advises locating a fresh, active tunnel near a fresh mound. Iowa State University Extension also recommends targeting active tunnel runs rather than old mounds. Trap types may be restricted in some places; check local rules and keep traps away from pets and other wildlife. Baits can also harm pets and other animals.
For raised beds, Oregon State University Extension identifies welded-wire barriers installed at the bed bottom as a way to deter moles and gophers. Do not assume that gadgets or homemade recipes work: Oregon State University Extension says they have not been scientifically shown to control moles.

2. Pocket gophers may leave a plug beside the mound
Pocket gopher piles are often larger and asymmetrical, sometimes crescent- or fan-shaped. The soil plug may be offset rather than visible at the center. Because gophers eat roots and fleshy plant parts, missing plants or damaged roots alongside a mound make this possibility more plausible.
Shape is only a clue, not a diagnosis. Confirm the animal and check local rules before using a control. A barrier in a raised bed may help deter gophers; Oregon State University Extension identifies welded wire at the bed bottom as a prevention option.
3. Earthworms leave small castings
Small, scattered piles can be earthworm castings rather than excavated mounds. They are a different scale and pattern from larger piles made by burrowing animals, and they lack a chimney-like form. Earthworms are generally beneficial to soil.

If you are unsure, examine the pile and nearby ground for signs of a larger tunnel system or plant damage. Do not treat castings as proof of a damaging pest.
4. Ants pile soil at nest sites
Ants can leave small soil piles at nest sites. Look for visible ants and a small entrance; the nest may be in a thinning or bare area, though ants can also occur in healthy lawns. Some openings may be difficult to spot.
Identify the ant and decide whether its nest is causing a meaningful problem before treating. A small mound by itself does not establish that control is needed.

5. Burrowing crayfish may build chimneys where present
In places where burrowing crayfish occur, they may create chimney-like mounds. This is a location-dependent possibility, not a default explanation for a dirt pile. A chimney form helps distinguish these mounds from small earthworm castings.
What if the trails are from voles?
Voles are a common lookalike to consider, but their signs are usually surface runways and gnawing on plants rather than soil mounds. If you see trails or plant gnawing without a mound, do not assume a mole or gopher made the damage.
Choose a response only after identifying the cause
- Assess the damage. A few mounds may not justify removal. Consider whether plants, turf, or infrastructure are actually being harmed.
- Match any control to the animal. If mole activity is confirmed and control is warranted, target a fresh, active tunnel with an appropriate trap; do not rely on mound appearance alone.
- Check local restrictions and safety. Follow product and trap instructions, check local rules, and protect pets and other wildlife.
- Use prevention where it fits. Welded-wire barriers at the bottom of raised beds can deter moles and gophers, according to Oregon State University Extension.
- Ask for local help when uncertain. Contact a Cooperative Extension office if signs remain ambiguous or damage continues.
FAQ
Why is there a dirt mound if I cannot see a hole?
Moles can push soil above underground tunnels without leaving a visible opening at the mound. Pocket gophers may have a soil plug offset from the pile. Small castings or ant nest soil are other possibilities.

How can I tell a mole mound from a gopher mound?
Mole piles are often rounded or volcano-shaped and may occur with raised, soft ridges. Gopher piles are often larger and asymmetrical, with an offset plug; missing plants or damaged roots also support a gopher possibility. These are clues, not definitive identification.
Could voles be making the dirt mounds?
Voles generally leave surface runways and gnaw plants rather than making soil mounds. Look for trails and gnawing, and consider other causes for the pile itself.
Should I remove a mole if I find a mound?
Not necessarily. Decide based on the level of damage. If control is warranted, target a fresh, active tunnel, check local trap restrictions, and take precautions for pets and other wildlife.
When should I ask an expert to identify the mound?
If the signs do not clearly fit, or damage continues, contact a local Cooperative Extension office. Location and fresh observations matter to identification.
