Some insects look like they belong in a horror story; others have defenses worth respecting. Here are five Halloween-worthy examples, with a clear distinction between unsettling appearance and established risk to people. “Scary” is not a scientific danger rating, and each group’s behavior varies by species.
1. Calyptra vampire moths: blood-feeding, but not everywhere
“Vampire moth” is an unsettling name with a real basis: some moths in the genus Calyptra can pierce skin and feed on mammal blood. The USDA Agricultural Research Service places these blood-feeding species in Southern Europe, Eastern Africa, and the Sub-Himalayan regions of South Asia. It specifically notes that the North American Calyptra species is not known to feed on blood. The source does not describe these moths as disease vectors, so the name alone is not a reason to assume they transmit disease. 2. Death’s-head hawkmoth: a skull in the dark
The death’s-head hawkmoth earns its Halloween look from a skull-like marking on its thorax and dark, cloak-like wings. It has also been reported to make a high-pitched squeak when disturbed. Those traits explain its eerie reputation, but they do not establish that the moth is dangerous to people.
There is stranger behavior behind the folklore: a 2003 peer-reviewed study of Acherontia hawkmoths and related genera describes adults entering honeybee colonies to steal honey from the combs. That is a feeding detail about the moths and bees, not evidence that they attack people. 3. Assassin bugs: predators with a painful bite
Assassin bugs are predatory true bugs. They seize other prey and use a beak to feed; they are not insects that hunt people. But an assassin bug can inflict a painful bite if someone mishandles it, so avoid picking one up. Not every assassin bug is a blood-feeding conenose bug, and the group should not be treated as though all members have the same habits. NC State Extension’s assassin bug guidance.
4. Wasps and bees: stings vary by species
Wasps and bees are familiar Halloween villains because some can sting when threatened or disturbed. USDA quotes Forest Service entomologist Robert J. Rabaglia describing wasps, bees, and ants as among the most notorious poisonous insects. That is category-level context, not a claim that every species has the same risk or behavior. 5. Caterpillars with poisonous spines: a warning you can’t always see
Some caterpillars have poisonous spines, according to Rabaglia in the same USDA article. The source does not identify particular species, so it would be misleading to imply that all caterpillars are hazardous. Avoid touching an unfamiliar, spiny caterpillar; appearance alone may not tell you which species it is or what its spines can do. USDA’s quoted statement is: “There are some caterpillars that have poisonous spines and some true bugs, such as the assassin bug, that have venomous bites.”

Centipedes may look like natural additions to a spooky list, but they are arthropods—not insects. The University of Kentucky notes that some can inflict a painful bite, while they are not broadly dangerous to humans. That makes them a poor fit for a list specifically about insects.
