For scatter and spray containment, Cats.com’s June 15, 2026 roundup names the Modkat XL its overall pick, with Frisco, iPrimio, SmartCat, Litter-Robot 5 and IRIS models aimed at different needs. These are that publisher’s editorial picks, not independent comparative test results. A high wall will not solve every mess, and a sudden change in where your cat urinates calls for a veterinarian, not just a new box.
Which kind of mess are you trying to stop?
- Litter kicked out while digging: Higher walls or a removable guard can help contain scatter. Compare wall height and layout with the direction your cat tends to dig.
- Litter tracked out after the cat exits: A litter mat can catch some of the loose litter on the way out; taller walls do not address tracking by themselves.

Petmate lists dimensions of 25.56 × 18.30 × 10.02 inches and describes an oversized open pan with high walls and a sloped entry. The manufacturer says the box is made with 95% pre-consumer recycled plastic and that its high sides help contain litter scatter; those are Petmate’s own product and material claims, not independent efficacy findings. Moderna HY Rex
Moderna lists dimensions of 34 × 19.7 × 10 inches and describes a low entry, high sides all around and a compartment for a scoop or bags. The manufacturer says it uses 50% recycled material and claims the walls help contain litter scatter and cat spray. These are vendor statements. See Moderna’s HY Rex details.
How to choose a box that fits your cat and your home
Measure the usable pan, not just the outside
Compare the floor dimensions with your cat’s body and the room it needs to turn. A tall wall cannot compensate for a cramped interior. The dimensions available for the Frisco, iPrimio, Modkat XL, Petmate Giant and Moderna HY Rex are stated above; the cited roundup does not give a dimension for every pick.

Check the lowest entry point
Look at the entry height rather than judging accessibility by the tallest wall. Kittens, senior cats and cats with mobility limitations may need a lower threshold. The iPrimio’s listed 7.5-inch entry is a particular consideration; confirm entry dimensions for other models with the seller or manufacturer if access is a concern.
Match wall layout to the direction of the mess
All-around walls, a removable shield, a front or top entry, and an enclosed self-cleaning unit are not interchangeable designs. Think about whether your cat kicks litter in several directions or consistently sprays toward one side. A guard can address a particular direction without requiring the same setup as an enclosed box.

Account for cleaning and consumables
Consider how easily you can scoop corners, remove a shield, replace a liner and clean the material. The Modkat XL uses a reusable liner; the Modkat tray instructions specify a Type-G liner. The Litter-Robot 5 has ongoing liner and maintenance costs, according to the roundup. Compare those routines with how often you can realistically clean the box.

Product names can be similar. The IRIS Large Cat Litter Box with Scatter Shield in Cats.com’s roundup should not be confused with the separate Litter Genie-branded high-sided pan with scatter shield and scoop shown on IRIS USA’s product page. That page identified SKU 500423 and showed $24.99 when accessed; the figure is a dated listing, not a guaranteed current price.
