You can make a funny, memorable cat video, but you cannot guarantee it will go viral. Start with behavior your cat offers freely, film it clearly, and shape the footage into a short story. Your cat’s comfort comes first; a reaction is never worth frightening or putting them at risk.
1. Catch a moment your cat chooses
Look for a distinctive meow, an unexpected leap, a familiar routine, or a playful interaction that happens naturally. Keep the camera ready for the moments your cat already enjoys rather than staging a reaction.

Do not frighten, restrain, or provoke your cat to get a bigger response. Stop filming if your cat seems uncomfortable, and never put them in danger for a shot. A 2025 study of 162 funny pet videos posted on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube from August 2022 through August 2023 reported stress reactions in 82% and risk of injury in 52% of the videos it analyzed. Those figures describe that study’s sample, not all pet videos; the authors also reported evident stress reactions in more than 90% of challenge videos.
2. Keep the filming setup simple
A phone or camera you already own is enough. Hold it steadily, keep your cat in frame, and capture enough of the surroundings for viewers to understand what is happening. Clear away distracting clutter where practical, but do not disrupt a comfortable space just to make the shot look staged.

An adjustable smartphone tripod can be a convenient hands-free aid, but it is optional. No particular equipment is required, and buying gear does not make a video more likely to spread.
3. Choose the format for your platform
There is no single video format that applies to every service. As one current example, YouTube’s help documentation categorizes new vertical videos that are one to three minutes long as Shorts. Check the rules for the platform where you plan to post; formats and policies can change.

4. Edit so the joke or charm lands quickly
Lead with the clearest moment, trim pauses that do not help the viewer, and add captions or narration only if they make the action easier to follow. A simple shape often works well: a brief setup, the cat’s moment, then the payoff. This is an editing approach, not a guaranteed formula for virality.

5. Use music and footage you have permission to use
Original footage is the simplest starting point. If you add music to a YouTube Short, YouTube says you can use copyrighted music through its in-product Shorts audio library and creation tools; music added outside those tools may be subject to standard copyright claims. Music available through a platform’s library should not be assumed to be cleared for use elsewhere.
If you use someone else’s material, make sure you have the rights or a suitable license. Giving credit does not, by itself, make a non-transformative copy fair use. Fair use is a case-specific legal question decided by courts, not something a disclaimer can guarantee.

6. Publish accurately and learn from the response
Give the video a title that describes what actually happens, with a short explanation if viewers need context. You can also share what you personally find funny or endearing about the moment. After posting, notice how people respond and use that feedback to make future videos clearer or more entertaining.
