It is a covered, roomy option with a removable filter, but it will not suit every cat. The best choice for your home depends first on whether your cat can enter comfortably, turn around and use the tray reliably—not on whether the box is enclosed or has extra features.
The product rankings and observations below are attributed to the Cats.com review, which says it tested selected trays at home over several weeks. They are not independent test results. Prices and dimensions are the figures reported in that article, not live or independently verified listings.
Which cat litter box is best in the UK?
For a cat that is comfortable using a covered tray, Cats.com names the Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Pan as its overall choice. Its review highlights the box’s size, ease of cleaning and odour reduction, while noting that its fastening clips could be sturdier and that some cats may dislike a covered design.
That recommendation is a starting point, not a universal answer. Check the usable interior space and entrance against your cat’s size and mobility. If your cat is hesitant about a hood or flap, an open tray may be a better fit. The RSPCA advises choosing a sturdy tray that gives a cat room to turn freely; Cats Protection suggests offering two different tray types if you are unsure which your cat prefers.

How Cats.com says it assessed the trays
Cats.com says its author spent several weeks testing selected trays at home, observing two cats and considering sturdiness, cat-friendliness, sticking, litter scatter, odour and cleaning ease. The article also says the author read customer reviews and consulted veterinarians. Its rankings and observations should be understood as that publisher’s review, not as an independent comparative study or veterinary safety certification.
Choose for access, fit and your cat’s preference
Check entry and turning room
A top-entry box may reduce litter tracked out, but it can be difficult for an older cat or one with limited mobility. A hood, flap or unusual shape can also make access less comfortable. Before choosing a style, check that your cat can get in and out without strain and has enough interior room to turn freely. The RSPCA advises a robust, non-toxic, sturdy and durable tray; its guidance is general and does not endorse these particular models.

Let your cat show you what works
Some cats may appreciate the privacy of a hood, while others avoid it. Cats Protection advises removing a flap if it deters use and, when preferences are uncertain, offering two different types of tray. A cat consistently avoiding a new box is a reason to reassess its access, location and layout rather than assume that more enclosure is better.

Cats Protection says many cats prefer fine, heavy, sand-like unscented litter and gives 3 cm as a generally preferred depth. The organisation also advises regular cleaning: the RSPCA recommends daily spot-cleaning and replacing litter at least weekly. Strongly scented litter or cleaning products may put a cat off, so a filter or hood should not be treated as a substitute for upkeep.
Allow for every cat in a multi-cat home
The RSPCA and Cats Protection both recommend one tray per cat, plus one extra. Consider where each tray can be placed so cats can use them without unnecessary competition or disturbance.

What to know about smart and self-cleaning trays
This comparison covers seven manual boxes, not automatic litter trays. Cats Protection’s 2025 UK report says 88% of cat owners had no concerns about using electronic or “smart” technology for their cat. That is an attitude finding, not evidence that cats prefer automated trays or that a particular device is safe. The report also notes reports of injuries to cats from automated devices, including self-cleaning litter trays.
Cats Protection’s Central Behaviour Officer, Daniel Warren-Cummings, cautions: “Tech should be seen as an aid in providing an enriched life for a cat but should never be viewed as a replacement for appropriate husbandry and human interaction. When choosing a litter tray, be wary of marketing that is primarily designed for humans, instead of the best interests of the cat. Litter trays should be large, private and easy to access. Most cats prefer soft, unscented, sand-sized litter. Funky, modern or more tech-based litter trays may not be ideal toileting sites for cats, due to their shape and potential for movement. Litter trays that aren’t cleaned thoroughly, for example if the deposits are just trapped below, can retain smells that can discourage cats from using the tray.”
