Keep chocolate and caffeine, grapes and raisins, onions and garlic, xylitol, macadamia nuts, alcohol, and raw yeast dough away from your dog. These are seven practical hazard groups—not an official ranking or a complete list of every food risk. The effects vary by ingredient and exposure, and a food that causes no obvious immediate symptoms can still require prompt veterinary advice.

Seven foods and ingredients to keep away from dogs

The ASPCA Poison Control food guide describes hazards by category rather than ranking them. These seven groups are a useful prevention checklist; they are not a severity order. The guide does not provide universal safe doses across them.

1. Chocolate, coffee, and caffeine

Chocolate, coffee, and other caffeine sources contain methylxanthines, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, panting, increased thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, and seizures. Severe exposure can be fatal. Higher-cacao chocolate and more concentrated caffeine products are greater concerns; baking chocolate and cocoa powder have especially high methylxanthine concentrations among chocolate types, while white chocolate has the lowest.

Chocolate risk also depends on the dog and the product: smaller dogs may be affected by smaller amounts, and darker chocolate generally contains more theobromine. White chocolate has very little theobromine, but its fat and sugar can still cause problems, including pancreatitis. Do not treat any chocolate as a safe dog treat.

2. Grapes and raisins

Grapes and raisins can cause kidney damage in dogs. The ASPCA guide notes tartaric acid as a speculated toxic component but gives no safe dose. Do not assume a small amount is harmless; contact a veterinarian or animal poison control if your dog may have eaten either.

3. Onions, garlic, and chives

These Allium vegetables can irritate the gastrointestinal tract and damage red blood cells, potentially causing anemia. The risk depends on how much the dog ate. The guide does not establish a safe amount, so seek veterinary advice after a suspected exposure rather than relying on a dose estimate.

4. Xylitol

This sweetener may be found in gum, candy, baked goods, and toothpaste. Depending on the amount, xylitol can cause dangerously low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and potentially liver damage. Early signs can include vomiting, lethargy, and loss of coordination, and may progress to seizures. Liver damage may occur within 12–24 hours. Check ingredient labels and contact a veterinary professional if exposure is possible.

5. Macadamia nuts

Macadamia nuts can cause weakness, incoordination, depression, vomiting, tremors, and elevated body temperature (hyperthermia). Signs usually appear within 12 hours, and recovery is expected within 24–72 hours, according to the ASPCA guide. That typical course is not a reason to wait without veterinary advice.

What to do if your dog eats one of these

  1. Move the remaining food out of reach. Keep the packaging or ingredient label, if available.
  2. Note what and how much your dog may have eaten. Estimate the time of exposure and have your dog’s weight and relevant medical history ready.
  3. Call your veterinarian or animal poison control promptly. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center lists (888) 426-4435. A consultation fee may apply.
  4. Follow professional instructions. Do not induce vomiting or try a home remedy unless a veterinary professional tells you to.

For chocolate, save the wrapper and identify the type and any fillings, especially raisins or macadamia nuts. If the product is sugar-free, check whether it contains xylitol. A veterinary professional or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center can use the amount, chocolate type, your dog’s weight, and medical history to assess the situation and advise what to do next.

Why ingredient labels and exposure reports matter

Xylitol can be tucked into products that do not look like dog hazards, so check labels on gum, candy, baked goods, and toothpaste before leaving them within reach. Formulation matters too: chocolate types differ in methylxanthine content, and the dog’s size can affect the concern from an exposure.

ASPCA reported that food and drink accounted for 16.4% of its Poison Control calls about pet exposures in 2025, and chocolate accounted for 13.6% of its exposures that year. These are shares of reported ASPCA service exposures, not dog-only poisoning rates or the chance that an individual dog will be poisoned. They show why careful storage and prompt calls matter, but they do not rank these seven hazards.

Other food hazards to know about

The seven groups above are not the only foods or feeding practices that can pose risks. The ASPCA guide also discusses salty foods, bones, raw or undercooked meat and eggs, and some fatty foods. Ask your veterinarian about your dog’s diet and check with them when you are unsure whether a particular food is appropriate.
