The right first litter box gives a kitten an opening it can manage and enough floor space to turn. Start with a simple, open pan if you are unsure; check the kitten’s ability to get in and out rather than relying on a product’s “low-entry” label. The seven options below are a criteria-based shortlist, not a tested ranking. A kitten’s size and preferences will determine which one works.
What to look for in a kitten’s first litter box
- Manageable entry: The kitten should be able to step in and out without struggling. “Lowered entry” is not a published height measurement, so inspect the opening against your kitten’s size.
- Room to turn: AAHA’s general feline sizing recommendation is a box at least 1.5 times the cat’s length. A kitten needs an accessible entry now, but enough usable floor space to turn and grow. Product-page dimensions are often external measurements, not interior floor dimensions.
- Simple layout: Cornell says, “Most cats prefer simple boxes without hoods.” That is a general preference, not a rule for every kitten; an enclosed box can work if your kitten readily uses it.
- Manageable cleanup: Higher sides may help contain mess, but can also make entry harder for a small kitten.
AAHA also advises that box edges should not be too high for kittens or senior cats to enter and exit easily. See AAHA’s litter-box guidance and Cornell Feline Health Center’s litter-box advice.

Seven options to consider
These options are not ranked by comparative testing. For manufactured boxes, published dimensions describe the product as listed; they do not establish interior floor area or entry height.
1. PetFusion BetterBox Cat Litter Box
This large, open pan has a low entry and manufacturer-listed dimensions of 22.68 × 18.11 × 8.07 inches. Consider it if your kitten can comfortably step over the entry and would benefit from more room. Check the opening in person or against the kitten’s reach; the listed dimensions do not give its entry height. See the manufacturer’s BetterBox details.

6. Shallow tray or seed tray
A shallow tray can be a practical first pan if it is long and wide enough for the kitten to turn and its sides are easy to step over. AAHA lists seed trays among possible alternatives to standard litter boxes. Read AAHA’s guidance on litter-box alternatives.
7. Large flat tray, such as a baking or concrete mixing tray
A roomy, flat tray may provide more accessible floor space than a high-sided box. Choose one with enough usable area for the kitten to turn and sides it can manage. The 2022 ISFM/AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines list baking trays and builders’ concrete mixing trays as alternatives; AAHA also notes that larger storage containers can help achieve appropriate size. If you adapt a storage container by creating a low entry, finish the cut edge so it cannot injure the kitten. See the ISFM/AAFP environmental-needs guidelines and AAHA’s litter-box guidance.

Set up the box so your kitten can find and use it
- Provide one box per cat, plus one extra. For a single-cat home, that means two boxes. Guidance also describes providing one per social group, plus one extra, when social groups are relevant.
- Place boxes in quiet, low-traffic, easy-to-reach locations, away from food and water. In a larger home, consider one on each floor and near the kitten’s usual activity or resting areas.
- Scoop daily and clean regularly. AAHA advises washing with hot water and avoiding soap or strong chemicals.
- Let a kitten that is reliably using a familiar setup keep that litter and box type when possible. Cats vary in their preferences, so avoid sudden changes.
For placement and cleaning details, see AAHA’s guidance and International Cat Care’s advice on toileting behaviour.
If your kitten avoids the litter box
Soiling outside the box can have a health or behavioral cause; a different pan alone may not solve it. Ask a veterinarian for advice, particularly if the problem persists or your kitten seems uncomfortable. Straining to urinate can be an emergency, especially for male cats, and warrants prompt veterinary attention. AAHA’s litter-box guidance and International Cat Care’s toileting advice discuss these concerns.
