For a multi-cat home, the best litter box is not automatically the biggest one. Start with enough boxes in separate, accessible locations, then choose each box for your cats’ size, mobility, habits, and tolerance for covered spaces. How many litter boxes do multiple cats need?
Catster and Cats.com both give the general rule of one litter box per cat, plus one extra. That means two cats would have three boxes under the rule, and three cats would have four. Some cats share comfortably, but a single oversized pan should not be treated as a guaranteed substitute for multiple boxes.

Placement matters alongside the count: distribute boxes where cats can reach them without having to pass another cat in a narrow or blocked area. This is especially relevant in homes where one cat guards resources or another avoids a busy spot. The cited reviews do not establish a universal layout for every home, so observe whether each cat can approach, use, and leave a box without being interrupted.

Check usable interior size
Catster describes more than 400 square inches of litter surface as ideal for a communal box. Cats.com offers a cat-relative guide: the box should be at least as wide as the cat’s nose-to-tail-base length and about 1.5 times its body length. These are publisher recommendations, not veterinary standards verified here. Compare the usable area inside the walls, rather than relying only on the product’s outside dimensions.

Balance access with mess containment
High walls can help limit scattered litter and spray, but a tall entrance may be difficult for kittens, senior cats, or cats with mobility limitations. A low-entry design improves access but may contain less spray. Grate steps can catch tracking for some cats, while others may avoid them. Consider the cats who will use the box, and watch for reluctance rather than assuming a feature will suit every animal.
Choose open or covered based on behavior
A covered box may offer privacy and help contain litter or odor, but it can also restrict visibility and leave a cat with fewer exit options. Cats.com cautions that another cat blocking the entrance can turn an enclosed box into a dead end; Catster’s list includes covered designs and values their privacy and odor features. Neither style is best for every household. If cats have social tension, an open box with clear approach and exit routes may be a better starting point.

Account for cleaning, footprint, and litter type
Carbon filters, enclosed waste drawers, automatic scooping, and stainless construction are features, not guarantees that a box will stay odor-free. Regular scooping and cleaning still matter. Automatic models can reduce routine scooping but take more room and involve greater cost; a pellet-and-pad system requires compatible supplies, while an automatic unit may have its own litter requirements. Check current instructions before buying replacement litter, pads, or filters.

Which design fits which cats?
For cats that dig or spray
Consider a high-sided pan if its entrance remains easy for every cat to use. A lower entrance can help with access, but it may also be where litter or spray escapes. A covered box can contain some mess, although the Catit review notes possible spray leakage; no design eliminates the need to monitor the surrounding floor.
For kittens, seniors, or cats with limited mobility
Prioritize a low entry and a stable route into the box. KittyGoHere is the option in Catster’s list explicitly presented for kittens, seniors, and cats with mobility issues. Its low walls are a compromise if a cat sprays or kicks litter out.

For homes that want less routine scooping
