There is no evidence-based universal ranking of the “best” medicines for cat allergies. The right option depends on whether you need relief for nasal symptoms, itchy eyes, or persistent symptoms that warrant an allergist’s advice. These seven options cover common symptom treatments and longer-term care; they are not equally suitable for everyone, and immunotherapy is not an over-the-counter medicine.

Which symptoms can cat-allergy medicines help?

Cat allergies can cause sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy or watery eyes, and skin symptoms. Some people also wheeze or feel chest tightness. Because breathing symptoms can require medical attention, do not treat them as a routine nuisance; seek appropriate medical care. ACAAI and AAAAI describe the range of pet-allergy symptoms.

The options below are organized by symptom and treatment role, not by a head-to-head test. The cited clinical sources do not establish that one medicine is best for every person with a cat allergy.

Seven medication options for cat-allergy symptoms

1. Oral antihistamine tablets

Nonprescription oral antihistamines can help relieve itching, sneezing, and a runny nose. Mayo Clinic lists fexofenadine (Allegra Allergy), loratadine (Claritin, Alavert), cetirizine (Zyrtec Allergy), and levocetirizine (Xyzal Allergy) as examples. These are alternatives within a class, not a ranking of brands or a guarantee that one will work best for you.

2. Nasal corticosteroid sprays

For nasal allergy symptoms, nasal corticosteroids reduce swelling and help control symptoms. Mayo Clinic names fluticasone (Flonase Allergy Relief), mometasone (Nasonex 24HR Allergy), and triamcinolone (Nasacort Allergy 24HR). It notes that nasal corticosteroids have a much lower risk of side effects than oral corticosteroids. Follow the current product label and ask a clinician or pharmacist if you are unsure whether a spray is appropriate for you.

3. Prescription nasal antihistamine sprays

A clinician may consider a nasal antihistamine when nasal symptoms need treatment. Mayo Clinic lists azelastine and olopatadine (Patanase). These are prescription options in the cited Mayo Clinic guidance; check local availability and current labeling with a health professional.

4. Antihistamine eyedrops

When itchy or watery eyes are the main problem, antihistamine eyedrops are one treatment class ACAAI identifies for eye symptoms. Its pet-allergy page does not specify an ingredient, so ask a pharmacist or clinician to help select a product that suits your symptoms and circumstances.

5. Decongestants for nasal obstruction

Decongestants may relieve a blocked nose, but they have important cautions. Mayo Clinic warns that oral decongestants can raise blood pressure and may be unsuitable for people with hypertension, glaucoma, or cardiovascular disease. Using nasal decongestant sprays for more than three consecutive days can worsen congestion. Check with a health professional before using one if you have relevant health conditions or take other medicines.

6. Montelukast, when a clinician considers it appropriate

Montelukast is a prescription option a clinician may consider when nasal corticosteroid sprays or antihistamines are not suitable. Mayo Clinic lists headache and fever among possible side effects, as well as less common mood or behavior changes, including anxiousness or depression. It is not a self-treatment option; discuss potential benefits and risks with the prescriber.

7. Allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots)

Immunotherapy is a clinician-administered, longer-term approach—not a routine over-the-counter symptom medicine. Mayo Clinic describes a gradual build-up followed by maintenance treatment. An allergist can assess whether it is appropriate and explain the schedule and expected commitment.

How to choose an option safely

Match the treatment discussion to the symptom that is bothering you, and check the product label for age limits, directions, and warnings. Availability and labeling can vary by location. A clinician or pharmacist can help account for other conditions and medicines; an allergist is especially useful if symptoms persist, the trigger is uncertain, or you are considering prescription treatment or immunotherapy.

  • Nasal itching, sneezing, or runny nose: Ask about an oral antihistamine or nasal corticosteroid; a prescription nasal antihistamine may be another option.
  • Itchy or watery eyes: Ask about antihistamine eyedrops.
  • Blocked nose: Discuss decongestant cautions before use, particularly if you have hypertension, glaucoma, or cardiovascular disease.
  • Ongoing or difficult-to-control symptoms: Seek professional assessment rather than adding medicines on your own.
  • Wheezing or chest tightness: Get appropriate medical attention.

When to confirm that cats are the trigger

Persistent symptoms should not automatically be attributed to a cat. Mayo Clinic describes skin and blood tests as possible ways a health professional can investigate pet allergy. AAAAI says testing by an allergist/immunologist is the best way to identify the trigger and develop a personalized management plan.

Reduce allergen exposure alongside treatment

Medicine addresses symptoms, while exposure management can reduce contact with allergens. ACAAI notes that cat allergens occur in fur or skin and saliva, and suggests keeping the cat out of the bedroom, washing hands after contact, and running a HEPA air cleaner continuously to reduce allergen levels over time. No cat breed has been shown to be hypoallergenic, according to ACAAI.
