Natural cat litter can be a good fit if you want a plant-derived or recycled material, or want to compare different textures and formats. But “natural” does not guarantee low dust, better odor control, greater safety, or a smaller environmental footprint. Choose by the specific product’s ingredients and instructions—and by whether your cat comfortably uses it.
What counts as natural cat litter?
“Natural” is a broad label, not one standardized formula. Products described this way may use cedar, sawdust, pine, corn, beet pulp, soybean, wheat, or recycled paper. They may be clumping or non-clumping and vary in particle size, texture, fragrance, dust, absorption, odor management, and disposal directions. Read the product label and manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming the category tells you how a litter will perform. PetMD’s overview of natural cat litter and its guide to litter materials describe several of these options.
Seven reasons to consider natural cat litter
These are reasons to compare particular products, not benefits guaranteed by every natural litter.
-
You prefer plant-derived or recycled materials
Some litters use plant matter or recovered paper, which may better match your material preference. That preference alone does not prove an environmental advantage: the sources available here do not provide a life-cycle comparison showing that every natural product has a lower total impact than clay or silica litter.

-
You want to compare different materials
Natural litter gives you several material families to consider, including wood-, grain-, corn-, soybean-, and paper-based options. Their textures and handling can differ, so compare the actual formula instead of treating them as interchangeable.
-
You want to keep using a clumping formula
Some natural litters clump, so switching materials does not necessarily mean changing your scooping routine entirely. Check the package: not every natural formula clumps, and clumping behavior can vary.

Dr. Elsey's Ultra UnScented Clumping Clay Cat Litter 40 lb. Bag- PREMIUM QUALITY: A combination of premium texture and granule size made with 100% bentonite clay for maximum clumping creates litter particles that are just the right size.
- LOW DUST: Ideal for cats and owners who suffer from allergies with a 99.9% dust-free and hypoallergenic litter formulation.
- HARD CLUMPING: Hard clumping medium grain clay helps prevent moisture from reaching the bottom of the tray and forms hard clumps that won't break down, making it easier to scoop.
- SUPERIOR ODOR CONTROL: Formulated for single or multi-cat households with natural ingredients to keep your home smelling clean and fresh between litter box cleanings.
- LOW TRACKING: A unique formulation of medium grain clay helps keep litter in the box where it belongs.
-
You are open to a non-clumping option
Non-clumping formulas are available too. Whether one suits your household depends on your preferred cleaning routine and your cat’s acceptance; the natural label does not tell you how often the product should be changed.
-
You want to assess dust or fragrance more specifically
A particular unscented or low-dust product may be worth considering if fragrance or airborne dust is a concern, but “natural” is not a low-dust or unscented certification. PetMD cautions that scented litter may irritate cats with asthma or other breathing problems. The 2022 ISFM/AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines state: “Unscented clumping litters are generally preferred by cats and should be provided at a sufficient depth to allow burying of faeces and urine.”

-
A particular texture may suit your cat
Some cats may readily use a given natural litter; others may avoid unfamiliar particles or pellets. The ISFM/AAFP guidelines note that some cats may find wood shavings or wood and recycled-paper pellets uncomfortable to stand on, particularly cats with degenerative joint disease. Assess the individual cat rather than assuming a material is suitable for all.
-
You want to balance material choice with household routines
Comparing natural options lets you weigh material, texture, clumping, scooping effort, and disposal directions together. Do not assume a litter will control odor better or require less work without product-specific evidence and regular box care.

How to compare products before switching
Look at the product itself across these factors; the word “natural” does not settle any of them. There is no controlled head-to-head performance ranking established here for the different natural litter types.
- Material and texture: Check what the litter is made from and whether it is fine, coarse, or pellet-shaped.
- Clumping: Confirm whether it clumps and whether that matches your cleaning routine.
- Fragrance and dust: Look for an explicit unscented claim if you want to avoid fragrance; do not infer low dust from the material name.
- Odor management: Compare product-specific claims and your own experience rather than assuming one material controls odor better.
- Cleaning and replacement: Follow the package directions for scooping and changing the litter.
- Your cat’s response: Watch whether your cat enters the box, uses it normally, and seems comfortable on the substrate.
- Disposal: Follow both the product directions and local waste rules.
Switch gradually and monitor box use
Cats can be particular about litter texture and scent. If you try a new formula, offer it in a way that lets you see whether your cat accepts it rather than relying on the marketing label. If your cat avoids the box or starts eliminating elsewhere, do not assume the cause is simply preference; Cornell advises checking for medical problems when a cat consistently soils outside the box. Its house-soiling guidance explains that litter preference is one consideration among others.

Box setup matters independently of litter material. The 2022 ISFM/AAFP guidelines recommend, where space allows, a box “1.5 times the length of the cat (from nose to base of tail).” Merck Veterinary Manual’s litter-box guidance recommends daily scooping and cleaning the entire box at least once a week; it also notes that most cats prefer small clumping particles and unscented litter. These are general care recommendations, not evidence that natural litter as a category is best.
Safety and disposal cautions
Natural does not mean edible, harmless in any amount, flushable, or appropriate for compost used in food gardens. PetMD cautions that some natural clumping litters may be harmful if ingested in large quantities. It also advises against flushing used litter: cat feces may contain Toxoplasma gondii, which wastewater treatment may not eliminate. Follow local waste rules and the product label. If your cat has respiratory disease, eats litter, or avoids the box, ask your veterinarian for guidance.
Nor does a plant-based or recycled ingredient alone establish that a litter is greener overall. The cited material and veterinary sources do not provide robust comparative life-cycle figures, quantified emissions or landfill reductions, or controlled health-outcome comparisons between natural and conventional litters.
