In some cases it refers to color or anatomy; in others, an unusual feeding behavior or a scientific name. The vampire squid is the clearest case where the spooky label hides a very different reality: it gathers drifting organic matter from the ocean, rather than hunting prey for blood.
Why these animals are called vampires
The eight examples below are the selection in Treehugger’s article “8 Animals Named After Vampires,” updated October 5, 2020—not a complete inventory of every animal with a vampire-related name. The name can evoke appearance, teeth or other anatomy, feeding behavior, or simply a scientific name. Treat the less familiar descriptions as Treehugger’s account rather than as independently confirmed species profiles.

Eight animals with vampire-related names
1. Vampire squirrel
Treehugger includes a vampire squirrel for its vampire-like traits, but the article excerpt does not establish a reliable taxonomic identification. The common name alone is not enough to identify a species confidently.
2. Dracula ant
Treehugger describes adult Dracula ants as feeding on hemolymph—the fluid circulating in an insect’s body—from their own larvae, characterizing the behavior as “nondestructive cannibalism.” It also reports a 2018 study of rapid mandible snapping. Those details are reported here as the article’s account, not as independently verified findings.

3. Vampire squid
The vampire squid’s scientific name is Vampyroteuthis infernalis, translated by Smithsonian Ocean as “vampire squid from hell.” Despite the name, it is not a blood-feeding predator. It collects drifting organic material known as marine snow with two thread-like filaments. Smithsonian describes it as more closely related to octopuses than to true squid. It also has light organs and can release luminescent mucus when disturbed. Smithsonian Ocean: “The Vampire Squid from Hell”; Smithsonian Ocean: “Cephalopods: Octopus, Squid, Cuttlefish, and Nautilus”.
4. Vampire flying frog
Treehugger links this frog’s vampire name to structures involved in tadpole feeding and an unusual feeding behavior. The specific claims are not independently corroborated by the institutional sources cited here, so they should be understood as the article’s description rather than a verified technical account.
5. Vampire crab
Treehugger associates the vampire crab’s name with dark coloration, bright claws, and conspicuous eyes, and reports that the animal attracted interest in the trade before it was scientifically described. These details are not independently confirmed in the sources cited here.
6. Dracula fish
Treehugger identifies the Dracula fish as Danionella dracula and connects the name with structures in the male’s jaw. This is a different entry from the vampire tetra, and the species-specific detail is not independently checked in the sources cited here.

7. Vampire tetra
Treehugger uses “vampire tetra” for the payara, a fish it describes as hunting with prominent fangs. The label is a common-name association, not a claim that the fish is a supernatural creature. It is also distinct from the Dracula fish.
8. Vampire moth
Treehugger identifies the vampire moth as Calyptra thalictri. Its account says the moth commonly feeds on fruit, while some males in a Russian population have been reported feeding on mammals’ blood. That description does not establish blood-feeding as the usual diet of the species or a behavior of all individuals.

Does the vampire squid actually drink blood?
No. Smithsonian Ocean describes the vampire squid as a marine-snow feeder: it uses thread-like filaments to collect drifting organic material. Its vampire name is not evidence of blood-feeding, and the animal is more closely related to octopuses than to true squid. Its light organs and luminescent mucus are part of its unusual defenses, not a sign of predatory behavior.
One more animal name worth distinguishing
The eight entries are not the only animals with vampire-related scientific names. A Smithsonian Institution specimen record lists Pteropus vampyrus, collected in the Philippines on January 23, 1888; the record was last modified May 11, 2020. That is an additional example, not one of Treehugger’s eight animals. Smithsonian Institution specimen record: Pteropus vampyrus.
