Some young animals look unlike their parents because they pass through a distinct larval stage and metamorphosis. Others keep the same basic body plan but grow different feathers or colors as they mature. These eight examples show both patterns—including two very different stages in the life of one frog species.
Why can baby animals look so different from adults?
There is no single pattern. A larva can have a body form that is fundamentally different from the adult, while a juvenile bird may look much like an adult apart from its feathers and coloring. Texas Parks & Wildlife Department defines a larva as “newly hatched young that are fundamentally different than the adult” in its wildlife glossary. Metamorphosis describes the transition between distinct life stages; it does not describe every change from young to adult.

Birds that change their feathers as they mature
Young birds often retain the adult body plan, but their first plumage can look strikingly different. The British Trust for Ornithology explains that juvenile plumage may camouflage young birds in the nest and after fledging, helping reduce predation. In some species, differences in juvenile plumage may also signal social status and reduce aggression from adults. These are feather changes, not metamorphosis. BTO’s explanation of juvenile bird plumage describes the examples below.
1. Robin
A young robin has brown upperparts and a dark-speckled breast, rather than the familiar red breast of an adult. The speckles offer better concealment than that conspicuous adult coloring, according to BTO. During the bird’s post-juvenile moult, orange-red breast feathers begin to appear.

2. Blackbird
Young blackbirds have warm, speckled plumage that differs from the plumage of adult males and females. They later replace body feathers in a post-juvenile moult. The change is most apparent when comparing the juvenile with an adult male, but adult females also have a different appearance from the young bird.
3. Starling
Newly fledged starlings are gray-brown. In a post-juvenile moult, they replace those juvenile feathers with the darker, spotted, iridescent plumage associated with adults.

Animals whose life cycle includes metamorphosis
In these examples, a young animal is not simply a smaller adult. It develops through a distinct larval form before becoming an adult.
4. Caterpillar
A caterpillar is the larval stage of a butterfly or moth. It looks and lives differently from the adult insect, and passes through a pupa stage before adulthood. 5. Tadpole
A tadpole is an amphibian larva, not a miniature frog. Its form differs substantially from the adult, making the familiar sequence from egg to tadpole to frog a clear example of metamorphosis. The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department glossary identifies this kind of transformation as a life-stage change, rather than the gradual plumage shift seen in birds.
6. Lemur leaf frog tadpole
Lemur leaf frog eggs hatch into tadpoles, which then undergo metamorphosis into froglets, according to the Smithsonian’s account of the species. For the lemur leaf frogs in the Smithsonian’s care, the tadpole-to-froglet transition was reported to take 40 to 60 days in 2020; that is a specific account, not a timetable for all frogs.

7. Lemur leaf frog froglet
The froglet is a useful reminder that a dramatic larval stage does not mean every young stage looks unlike the adult. After metamorphosis, lemur leaf frog froglets emerge from the water as miniature versions of adults. The Smithsonian reported in 2020 that they were around one quarter of an adult’s size.
8. Panamanian golden frog toadlet
Despite its common name, the Panamanian golden frog is a toad. In the Smithsonian’s account, young animals first emerge from metamorphosis mostly dark; assistant curator Matt Evans said, “When they first morph out, they’re dark, mostly black.” Their legs and feet develop color, and around six months they begin turning the species’ signature yellow and developing the black X pattern or a variation. The age and pattern here follow the Smithsonian’s description of animals in its care, not a universal timetable for every individual. The account discusses breeding in 2022 and describes the species as extinct in the wild since 2009; that wording is the account’s conservation context, not a newly checked status assessment. What to do if you see a seal pup alone
A young animal resting by itself is not necessarily abandoned. NOAA Fisheries notes that harbor seal mothers may leave pups ashore while they forage. If you encounter one in Alaska, observe it from at least 100 yards away, as NOAA advises, and do not approach or attempt to care for it. NOAA’s harbor seal viewing guidance covers this advice. This is a wildlife-safety example, not a claim that seal pups have a different coat from their parents.
Quick Recap
Two kinds of difference, not one
- Distinct life stages: Caterpillars and tadpoles are larvae with a body form fundamentally different from the adult; metamorphosis takes them through a major transition.
- Juvenile appearance: Robin, blackbird and starling youngsters keep the same basic body plan but have feathers and colors that change as they mature.
- A mixed picture: Lemur leaf frogs look dramatically different as tadpoles, then emerge as froglets that already resemble small adults. Panamanian golden frog toadlets gradually develop their characteristic colors and pattern, as described by the Smithsonian.
