“Crazy ant” can refer to several species; this article is about the tawny crazy ant (Nylanderia fulva), an invasive ant found in parts of the southern United States. These ants move erratically, form large, sprawling colonies, and can bite but do not sting. For pets, the main concern described by extension sources is exposure to very large numbers—not a quantified, routine risk to household dogs or cats.
Pick up pet food when it is not being eaten, reduce ant hiding places, and seal suitable entry gaps. For widespread or persistent activity, get help identifying the ant and consider integrated professional management; follow pesticide labels and keep pets away from treated areas as directed.
1. “Crazy ant” does not identify one species
Several ant species are called crazy ants. The tawny crazy ant, also known as the Rasberry crazy ant in some Texas sources, is Nylanderia fulva. Its behavior and risks should not be assumed to apply to every species called a crazy ant.
UF/IFAS Extension recommends contacting a local Extension office or insect identification laboratory if you need a definitive identification. Fast, irregular movement can be a clue, but it is not enough to confirm the species.

2. They move quickly and nest without familiar mounds
Tawny crazy ant workers are reddish brown and less than one-eighth of an inch long, according to UF/IFAS Extension. They move quickly and erratically. Unlike red imported fire ants, they do not make the familiar, conspicuous mounds that homeowners may expect to find.
They can nest in moist, protected places such as leaf litter, stones, branches, trash, and potted plants. A lack of visible mounds does not mean there is no colony nearby.
3. Their colonies can be huge and spread across many nest sites
UF/IFAS describes tawny crazy ant colonies as potentially comprising millions of individuals and multiple queens. Colonies can use numerous nest sites and broad foraging areas, making a single nest difficult to locate and eliminating visible workers unlikely to solve an established infestation.
For a pet household, food and water can attract foragers. Pick up bowls when your pet is finished eating, store food in a sealed container, and clean spills promptly. These steps reduce attractants but do not eradicate a widespread colony.
4. They are spreading in parts of the southern United States
The tawny crazy ant is native to South America and is established in parts of the southern United States. Its distribution changes over time, so old range lists may be out of date. Mississippi State University Extension reported on October 6, 2026, that the ant had spread to three additional Mississippi counties—Wilkinson, Marion, and Perry. That is a dated state report, not a complete account of the ant’s national range.

If ants appear in several rooms, buildings, outdoor areas, or neighboring properties, the source may extend well beyond one indoor trail. A local Extension office can help with identification and current local information.
5. They can bite, but they do not sting
UF/IFAS Extension states that tawny crazy ants “do not sting but can nip with chewing mouthparts.” Texas A&M University reports that a bite causes minute pain that quickly fades. Keep pets away from dense trails and swarms, and ask a veterinarian about a concerning reaction or suspected injury.
Pet concerns should be kept in proportion. Texas A&M notes that companion animals may avoid heavily infested outdoor areas, and Mississippi State Extension reports veterinary-world concerns related to the ants’ sheer numbers. These sources do not quantify the risk to a typical household pet or provide a clinical treatment protocol.

6. Large infestations can overwhelm outdoor spaces and equipment
At high densities, tawny crazy ants can become a nuisance outdoors and may accumulate in electrical equipment, where they can contribute to shorts or equipment problems, according to UF/IFAS and Texas A&M. This does not mean every infestation will damage a particular device.

Do not open energized electrical equipment or spray insecticide into it. Keep pets and children away and contact a qualified electrician if ants are inside a panel, appliance, switch box, or wiring enclosure. A pest-management professional may also be needed to address the surrounding infestation.
7. Pet-safe prevention focuses on food, debris, and entry gaps
Sanitation and exclusion can make a property less attractive and reduce routes into the home, although they cannot by themselves eliminate an established, widespread colony.

- Reduce outdoor harborage. Remove leaf litter, branches, and unnecessary debris, and keep trash receptacles clean and away from the home where practical.
- Check entry points. Inspect gaps around doors, windows, and utility penetrations. Seal appropriate openings and replace worn thresholds or weather stripping.
- Protect pets from pesticides. Do not spray near pet food or water dishes. Keep pets away from treated areas for the period stated on the product label and follow all label directions.
The National Pesticide Information Center identifies walking through treated areas and eating ant baits as possible routes of pesticide exposure for pets. If you suspect an exposure or your pet has symptoms, contact a veterinarian or an appropriate poison-control resource; do not attempt a home treatment based on this article.

UF/IFAS says it does not know of over-the-counter products that are consistently effective against tawny crazy ants. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension cautions that chemical control alone is unlikely to provide long-term relief. Baits or insecticides may have a role when appropriate, but results depend on the infestation and the product’s current label; no product should be presented as a guaranteed solution.
For a large or recurring infestation, an inspection-based integrated plan is more realistic than repeated indiscriminate spraying. Homeowners may not be able to manage large populations on their own, and colonies can extend across property lines.

When to seek help
- Ask a local Extension office or insect identification laboratory to help confirm the species.
- Note where ants are active indoors and outdoors, including near pet food, debris, entry gaps, and equipment.
- For extensive or persistent activity, consult a reputable pest-management professional about inspection, treatment options, pet precautions, and follow-up.
- Read and follow the entire pesticide label. Keep products away from pets, children, food, and water as directed.
Do not spray near pet food or water, and do not assume a product marketed for household ants will control a large tawny crazy ant infestation. Product availability and label directions can change, so check the current label and local guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are tawny crazy ants dangerous to dogs or cats?
They can bite but do not sting. Extension sources describe concerns associated with very large numbers, but do not quantify the risk to a typical household pet or provide a clinical treatment protocol. Ask a veterinarian about a suspected injury or concerning symptoms.
How do I keep crazy ants out of my pet’s food?
Pick up food bowls when your pet is not eating, store food in a sealed container, and clean spills promptly. These steps reduce attractants but may not stop ants from a large nearby colony.
Will ant bait eliminate a tawny crazy ant infestation?
There is no guaranteed over-the-counter fix established by the sources cited here. UF/IFAS reports no knowledge of over-the-counter products consistently effective against tawny crazy ants; extensive or recurring activity may require integrated professional management. Use any pesticide only as its label directs and keep it inaccessible to pets.
What should I do if ants get into electrical equipment?
Do not open energized equipment or spray insecticide into it. Keep pets and children away and contact a qualified electrician; a pest-management professional may also be needed for the surrounding infestation.

The Bottom Line
Tawny crazy ants (Nylanderia fulva) move erratically, can form huge, sprawling colonies, and may bite but do not sting. Pet concerns in the cited sources are associated with dense infestations; they do not establish a routine risk level for household pets. Secure pet food, reduce debris and entry points, follow pesticide labels, and seek identification and professional help for widespread or persistent activity.
