Ocelots are wild cats with individually patterned coats, a range stretching from Texas through much of South America, and habits suited to low-light hunting. These eight facts explain what makes them distinctive—and why a global conservation label does not tell the whole story about local populations.

What is an ocelot?

The ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) is a spotted wild cat native to the Americas. Its coat is marked with spots and bands, and each animal’s pattern is distinctive. The markings help break up its outline in vegetation; an ocelot is neither a small leopard nor a domestic cat.

Where do ocelots live?

A broad range across the Americas

Ocelots range from Texas through Mexico and Central America and across much of South America. The IUCN Cat Specialist Group describes the southern extent as northeastern Argentina and southern Brazil, with exceptional records in northwestern Uruguay. IUCN Cat Specialist Group: Ocelot; IUCN Red List assessment.

Dense cover is important

Ocelots use a variety of habitats, but they are commonly associated with closed, dense vegetation and places near fresh water. In Texas, dense thorny low brush is especially suitable habitat. A wide geographic range does not mean the cat can thrive wherever it occurs: suitable cover is an important part of its habitat. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department: Ocelot.

IUCN Cat Specialist Group: Ocelot; San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance: Ocelot.

What do ocelots eat?

Ocelots are carnivores, and small mammals—especially rodents—are common prey. Birds and reptiles also appear in descriptions of their diet. The San Diego Zoo additionally lists fish and crabs. Their prey varies with what is available, so no single list describes every ocelot across such a large range. IUCN Cat Specialist Group: Ocelot; San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance: Ocelot; Texas Parks and Wildlife Department: Ocelot.

How do ocelot mothers care for their kittens?

Females care for and teach their young. The IUCN Cat Specialist Group gives a litter size of one to four kittens. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance: Ocelot; IUCN Cat Specialist Group: Ocelot.

Are ocelots endangered?

The IUCN Cat Specialist Group lists the species globally as Least Concern, and identifies the underlying Red List assessment as Version 2024-2. That is a global classification, not a guarantee that every population is secure. The specialist account notes that regional conservation classifications differ across the ocelot’s range. IUCN Cat Specialist Group: Ocelot; IUCN Red List assessment.

Habitat fragmentation and other local pressures can affect populations differently from the global picture. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recovery-plan material identifies habitat loss, vehicle collisions, and inbreeding among concerns for small, isolated populations. Because that material is older, it should not be treated as a current estimate of U.S. population size or as a statement of present legal status or recovery progress. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: Ocelot recovery plan.
