Shelter status alone cannot tell you whether a dog is aggressive, healthy, easy to train, or right for your household. The useful questions are about the individual dog: what staff know of its history, what they have observed, what care it needs, and how it responds in settings relevant to your home. Here are eight common claims worth replacing with a more careful way to decide.
1. “Shelter dogs are aggressive or were removed for serious behavior problems”
A dog’s shelter origin does not establish that it was abused, surrendered for aggression, or has a medical problem. A dog may arrive for many reasons, and staff may have only partial information about its life before arrival. Ask what is known about this dog’s history, current health, and observed behavior; distinguish direct observations from assumptions or incomplete records. The ASPCA’s discussion of shelter myths also cautions against treating shelter status as proof of a problem.

2. “Shelter dogs are all difficult to train”
Training needs vary from dog to dog. Shelter origin does not show that a dog is untrainable, but it also does not guarantee that training will be easy or that every behavior concern will resolve. Ask what the dog already knows, what situations are challenging, and what support staff recommend. The ASPCA lists “They’re difficult to train” among common misconceptions, rather than providing a controlled comparison of training outcomes for shelter and non-shelter dogs; treat the claim as a reason to ask about the individual, not as a promise in either direction. Read the ASPCA’s discussion of that misconception.

3. “Shelter dogs aren’t socialized with other animals”
Some dogs may be comfortable around other animals; others may need distance, careful introductions, or a home without certain pets. A shelter label cannot answer that question. Ask staff what the dog has actually done around other dogs or other animals, in what setting, and whether those observations are limited. If you have pets at home, seek guidance on a gradual introduction rather than assuming one brief meeting settles compatibility. The ASPCA identifies the blanket claim as bad advice, but that does not establish that every dog is comfortable with other animals (ASPCA).

4. “Shelter dogs are all older”
Shelters have dogs of different ages; there is no basis here for saying that every shelter dog is old. At the same time, puppies are not guaranteed to be available at a particular shelter or at a particular time. If age matters to your plans, ask what dogs are currently available and consider the needs that come with each individual dog’s life stage. The ASPCA includes “They are all older” among the myths it addresses (ASPCA).
5. “Shelter dogs are too much work”
How much time and care a dog needs depends on its health, activity level, training needs, and your household’s routine—not simply where it came from. Before adopting, ask about exercise, veterinary care, daily schedule, and any known behavior concerns. Be candid about the time and resources you can provide. The goal is not to assume that adoption will be effortless, but to judge whether the needs you know about are a realistic match.

6. “They’re unpredictable, so you can’t know what you’re getting”
No assessment can guarantee how a dog will behave after adoption. The ASPCA says standardized shelter dog behavior assessments have not proved highly accurate or precise at predicting aggression after adoption (ASPCA position statement). That is a reason to avoid treating one test or one interaction as a complete forecast—not a reason to stop gathering information.

Ask which observations come from walks, play, interactions with people or other animals, or time in a foster home, and what contexts staff have not been able to observe. These settings can reveal different aspects of a dog’s behavior. A foster stay may offer useful observations from a home environment, but it still cannot guarantee what will happen in yours. Staff can also tell you whether an observation is firsthand or based on limited history.

7. “A shelter dog won’t bond with a new owner”
Age or shelter history alone does not show that a dog cannot form a bond with a new person. The ASPCA rejects age as a determinant of a dog’s ability to bond (ASPCA). That does not mean every dog will settle in immediately or follow the same adjustment timeline. Ask what staff have observed about the dog’s interactions, then allow the relationship to develop at the dog’s pace.
8. “Senior shelter dogs are too old to play”
Age alone does not tell you whether an individual senior dog enjoys play. The ASPCA notes that some senior dogs enjoy fetch; that is an example, not a guarantee that every older dog wants or can safely play it (ASPCA). Ask about the dog’s comfort, mobility, and health, and choose activities that suit what staff know about that animal.

What to ask before choosing a dog
When comparing dogs or deciding whether one is a practical match, focus on the questions that affect daily life. Ask staff to separate confirmed information from what is unknown.
Recommended Free Tools
- Health and care: What health information and care needs are known?
- Observed behavior: In what settings has the dog been observed, and what happened?
- Household compatibility: What is known about the dog around children, visitors, or other pets relevant to your home?
- Age and activity: What routine, exercise, and activity appear appropriate for this dog?
- Uncertainty: Which answers are based on direct observation, and which rely on incomplete history?
Asking about health is especially worthwhile. In an ASPCA study conducted from January through May 2011 at five U.S. animal-welfare organizations, nearly 1,500 adopters participated. Nearly 90% said health information was important, roughly 80% said behavior information was important, and roughly 60% said information about the animal’s life before the shelter was important. These are responses from that study sample, not current nationwide estimates (ASPCA, 2012).

Careful questions matter because fit can be difficult. In a retrospective study of 23,932 animal records from one U.S. shelter, behavioral issues and incompatibility with existing pets were the most common stated reasons for returns. The study included dogs and cats, and its single-shelter findings should not be treated as rates for all shelters (Powell et al., 2021).
Why adoption matters—and what the numbers do not tell you
The ASPCA estimates that 5.8 million dogs and cats entered U.S. shelters and rescues in 2025, including 2.8 million dogs, and that 4.2 million shelter animals were adopted that year (ASPCA, 2025 statistics). These national figures provide context for adoption; they do not predict any particular dog’s health, temperament, or fit with a household.
