These precautions matter especially for puppies, senior dogs, small dogs, hairless or single-coated breeds, dogs with dense or double coats, and dogs with existing skin disease. If your veterinarian has prescribed a bathing schedule or medicated shampoo, follow those instructions rather than general seasonal advice.

Do not give your dog a routine full-body bath simply because winter has arrived. Cold, dry air can contribute to dry, flaky, itchy skin, and bathing too frequently may remove protective oils and make that discomfort worse.

A winter bath makes sense when your dog is visibly dirty, has rolled in something unpleasant, has been exposed to a potentially harmful substance, has a persistent odor caused by a dirty coat, or needs a veterinarian-directed bath. The right frequency depends on your dog’s coat, lifestyle, skin condition, and veterinary instructions—not on a universal winter timetable.
Between full baths, brush the coat and clean muddy or salty paws with a damp cloth. Localized cleaning can remove winter grime without wetting the entire dog. If your dog has been exposed to a chemical, oil, antifreeze, or another potentially toxic substance, contact a veterinarian or animal poison service promptly rather than relying on ordinary grooming.
2. Brush and detangle the coat before it gets wet
Brush out burrs, loose debris, and tangles before your dog enters the bath. Mats and knots can tighten when wet, making them harder to remove and potentially pulling painfully on the skin. A dry coat is also easier to inspect for redness, sores, parasites, or areas that need veterinary attention.
Pre-bath brushing helps shampoo reach the coat more evenly and makes rinsing and drying more efficient. Pay particular attention to behind the ears, around the collar, under the legs, on the belly, and beneath the tail—areas where damp debris and mats commonly collect.
If a mat is tight against the skin, do not force a brush through it or cut it with scissors held close to the body. A professional groomer or veterinarian can remove severe matting more safely.
3. Prepare a warm, secure bathing station
Choose an indoor tub, shower stall, laundry sink, or sink that is appropriate for your dog’s size. Close drafts, warm the room first, and place clean towels within reach before bringing your dog into the bathing area. Never leave a dog unattended in water or on a raised surface.

Put a non-slip mat on the floor of the tub or sink. Slipping can frighten a dog and may cause an injury; a stable surface also makes it easier for you to control the water and support your dog. Keep the door closed if your dog is likely to bolt while wet.

- a mild, dog-formulated shampoo;
- several absorbent dog towels ready before the bath;
- a non-slip bath mat;
- a handheld sprayer or container for controlled rinsing;
- a soft washcloth for the face; and
- an optional pet dryer if your dog tolerates one safely.
The purpose of these supplies is control, safety, and complete drying—not cosmetic perfection. Outdoor bathing is not appropriate in cold weather. A hose may be convenient in warm conditions, but winter bathing should take place in a comfortably warm indoor environment.
4. Use lukewarm water and shampoo made for dogs
Test the water with your hand before it touches your dog. It should feel comfortably warm or lukewarm, never cold and never hot. Water that is too hot can burn or irritate the skin, while cold water can make the experience unnecessarily stressful and increase chilling during the bath.
Use a shampoo formulated for dogs. Human shampoo—including baby shampoo—is not the routine choice because canine skin has a different pH and a thinner protective barrier than human skin. Human products may dry or irritate the coat and skin.
For an ordinary bath, choose a mild dog shampoo. A fragrance-free or hypoallergenic dog shampoo may be a sensible category to consider for a dog with easily irritated or dry-looking skin, but labels such as “natural,” “oatmeal,” or “hypoallergenic” do not guarantee that a product will suit every dog. Introduce any new product cautiously, rinse it away completely, and stop using it if irritation develops.
A pet-formulated conditioner or moisturizing rinse is optional. It may improve manageability and reduce moisture loss for some dry or long coats, but it is not required for every dog and does not treat an underlying skin disease. Ask your veterinarian what product is appropriate if your dog has diagnosed allergies, recurrent infections, open sores, or persistent itching.

5. Keep water and shampoo away from the face
Do not spray or pour water directly into your dog’s eyes, ears, or nose. A wet washcloth is safer for gently wiping the face. Use only a small amount of water around the muzzle, and take care not to force water into the nostrils.
Wash the rest of the body first, using your hand or a controlled sprayer rather than a powerful stream. If you need to protect the ears, ask your veterinarian what is appropriate. Do not push cotton balls, swabs, or any other item into the ear canal. Never substitute household eye products for veterinary-approved eye protection; if eye protection is needed, discuss it with your veterinarian beforehand.
Watch your dog’s body language. Lip licking, freezing, repeated attempts to escape, tucked posture, growling, or frantic movement can signal fear or discomfort. Pause, lower the water pressure, offer calm reassurance, and use treats if your dog can accept them safely. For a dog that cannot be handled without a struggle, a professional groomer or veterinary team may be safer than forcing a home bath.

6. Rinse more thoroughly than you think you need to
Wet the coat thoroughly, apply shampoo according to the product directions, and work it through the body from the neck toward the tail. Avoid scrubbing aggressively, especially over irritated skin. Keep shampoo away from the eyes and inside the ears.
Then rinse until the water runs clear and you can no longer feel slippery product in the coat. Thick, long, or double coats may require several minutes of rinsing. Residual shampoo can irritate the skin and may cause itching after the bath, even when the shampoo itself was appropriate.
Do not automatically rinse a medicated shampoo immediately. Some veterinary shampoos require a specific contact time. One veterinary bathing protocol may use approximately 10 minutes, but that is an example—not a universal rule. Follow the product label and your veterinarian’s exact instructions, including how often to bathe and whether the coat should be rinsed before application.

7. Dry your dog completely before exposing it to the cold
Drying is the most important winter-specific step. Towel-dry your dog as soon as the bath ends, then keep the dog in a warm, draft-free area until the coat is completely dry. Blot and squeeze water from the coat rather than vigorously rubbing a long coat, which can create tangles.
A dryer can help, especially for a dense or double coat, but introduce it gradually. Let your dog hear the dryer from a distance before directing airflow toward the body. Start with a low or cool setting, keep the airflow moving, and do not hold hot air close to the skin or point it at the face. Stop if your dog becomes distressed or if the skin feels hot.
Do not assume the coat is dry because the surface feels dry. Long, thick, and double coats can remain damp underneath, particularly around the chest, armpits, belly, groin, feet, and behind the ears. Part the coat with your fingers and check down to the skin. Keep drying until those areas are dry as well.
Do not send a wet dog directly into snow, freezing rain, or cold wind. A dog that is shivering, unusually quiet, weak, confused, or persistently cold after drying and warming needs veterinary advice. Do not try to diagnose an abnormal body temperature by appearance alone.

A different shampoo is not the answer to every itchy or flaky coat. Contact your veterinarian if your dog has persistent or worsening itching, redness, a strong skin odor, hair loss, sores, scabs, recurrent ear or skin infections, or a reaction that becomes worse after bathing.

When to call the vet promptly
- Your dog continues shivering or seems unusually cold, weak, lethargic, or confused after being dried and warmed.
- The skin is painful, raw, bleeding, oozing, or covered with spreading sores.
- Itching, redness, odor, or hair loss persists or repeatedly returns.
- Your veterinarian prescribed a medicated bath and you are unsure about the product, dilution, contact time, or frequency.
- Your dog panics, slips, snaps, or cannot be safely handled during bathing.
A simple winter bathing sequence
- Decide whether a full bath is necessary.
- Brush out debris and mats while the coat is dry.
- Warm the room and lay out towels, shampoo, a non-slip mat, and a washcloth.
- Use comfortably lukewarm water and wet the body gradually.
- Apply a dog-formulated shampoo, avoiding the face and ear canals.
- Rinse until no product remains; observe any prescribed medicated-shampoo contact time.
- Towel-dry immediately.
- Use a low or cool dryer only if your dog tolerates it, and check the undercoat and skin until fully dry.
- Keep your dog indoors and warm until there is no remaining dampness before going outside.
What to do if a full bath is unnecessary
Winter walks often leave dirt, salt, and grit on the feet without requiring a full-body wash. Wipe the paws with a damp cloth after walks, inspect between the toes, and dry them well. Brush away dried debris once the coat is dry. If the dog is heavily soiled or has stepped in a potentially harmful substance, use a full bath or seek veterinary advice as appropriate.
The goal is not to avoid water all winter. It is to avoid unnecessary washing, prevent slipping and irritation, rinse away every trace of shampoo, and make sure your dog is fully dry before cold exposure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to bathe a dog in winter?
No. Dogs do not automatically need to stop bathing in winter. Bathe when the coat is dirty, contaminated, odorous, or when your veterinarian has prescribed a schedule. Use a warm indoor setup and dry the coat completely before outdoor exposure.
What shampoo should I use for my dog in winter?
Use lukewarm water and a mild shampoo formulated for dogs. Human shampoo, including baby shampoo, is not the routine choice because human and canine skin differ in pH and protective barrier. For persistent irritation or diagnosed skin disease, ask your veterinarian about product selection.
How do I dry my dog after a winter bath?
Keep the dog in a warm, draft-free area, towel-dry immediately, and check beneath the surface of the coat. If tolerated, introduce a dryer gradually and use low or cool airflow while keeping it moving. Dense and double coats need extra checking because the undercoat may remain damp.
How often should a dog be bathed in winter?
There is no universal winter bathing interval. Frequency depends on the dog’s coat, lifestyle, skin condition, and veterinary instructions. Brushing and wiping dirty paws can often reduce the need for full-body baths.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Bathe your dog in winter when there is a good reason, not on a fixed seasonal schedule. Prepare a warm indoor station, use lukewarm water and dog shampoo, protect the face, rinse thoroughly, and dry all the way to the skin before your dog goes outdoors.
