An 8-week-old kitten found asleep on the median of Sunrise Highway in Central Islip was retrieved after Suffolk County Police briefly stopped traffic to make the rescue possible. The kitten, named Sunrise, was placed in a crate and checked for injuries.
Where and when was the kitten found?
News 12 Long Island reported that police received a call at about 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, about a kitten on the center median of Sunrise Highway in Suffolk County. CBS New York identified the location as Central Islip and reported that several drivers had spotted her on the concrete median.
How was Sunrise rescued?
Suffolk County Police briefly blocked the highway while animal rescuer John DeBacker went onto the median and retrieved the kitten. CBS New York reported that she was asleep when he reached her; DeBacker described his approach as a “sneak grab.” He placed her in a crate after the retrieval.
What happened to the kitten afterward?
Initial reports said Sunrise was being checked for injuries. A later report carried by PIX11 through AOL said she had received a medical evaluation and was expected to go to Last Hope Animal Rescue on Thursday, where she would be available for adoption. That report described the expected plan; the sources do not confirm that the transfer or an adoption was completed.

How did the kitten get onto the highway?
The reports do not explain how Sunrise reached the median. They do not establish that she was abandoned, escaped from a vehicle, or was deliberately placed there, so none of those explanations can be confirmed.
