The Brazilian treehopper featured here is Bocydium globulare, a tiny member of the treehopper family Membracidae found in tropical South America. Its remarkable head-like ornament is actually an enlarged part of its thorax—and scientists have not settled why it evolved.
1. “Brazilian treehopper” refers here to Bocydium globulare
Treehopper is a broad common name for insects in the family Membracidae. In this article, the name means Bocydium globulare, a species described as living in tropical South American rainforests. The family includes many other species, whose traits and life histories should not automatically be attributed to this one.
2. Its helmet is a ring of tiny globes and bristles
The most striking feature is an enlarged pronotum—the plate-like structure associated with the thorax. In B. globulare, it forms a circular arrangement of small, ball-like projections with bristly hairs around the head. The unusual shape can make the insect look as if it is carrying a miniature sculpture.
3. The whole insect is only about 5–6 mm long
Bocydium globulare is very small, measuring about 5–6 mm in length. A magnifying glass can help reveal the bristles and individual globes, though it is simply an optional aid for observing an insect this tiny.

4. The helmet is not an extra pair of wings
The pronotal helmet is a thoracic outgrowth, not a spare set of wings. An earlier explanation treated the structure as an extra wing-like appendage. Later work summarized by Treehugger instead links its development to genes involved in wing patterning. That genetic connection helps explain how such an unusual structure may develop; it does not establish why natural selection favored it.
5. Its purpose remains an open question
The helmet’s function has not been determined. Fungus mimicry and predator deception have been proposed as possibilities, but neither is established as the explanation. It is useful to separate what can be observed—the helmet’s form—from hypotheses about what it does.

6. It feeds on plant sap
Treehoppers pierce plant tissues and feed on phloem sap. The Treehugger feature reports that Brazilian treehoppers are frequently found beneath glory bush leaves. This feeding habit is a general treehopper trait; the feature does not provide a species-specific dietary study for B. globulare.
7. Females guard eggs and help nymphs reach food
The feature describes females laying eggs in plant stems and guarding them. It also reports that females make punctures that allow nymphs access to food. These are details attributed to the feature’s account; they should not be taken as a complete, independently established life-history description for every membracid species.

8. Treehoppers communicate through plant-borne vibrations
Rather than relying only on airborne sound, treehoppers can send vibrations through the plants they occupy. The feature describes signals associated with threats, mates, and feeding, including calls from nymphs. Because this behavior is discussed for treehoppers broadly, it should not be assumed that every signal has been documented specifically in B. globulare.

A survey by Benedito C. Lopes, published in Revista Brasileira de Zoologia in 1995, recorded 52 treehopper species associated with 40 host-plant species in cerrado vegetation at Moji-Guaçu, São Paulo. Observations ran from October 1980 to February 1982; these totals describe a multi-species community, not B. globulare alone.

Within that local survey, Byrsonima intermedia had the greatest number of associated treehopper species: 10. Malpighiaceae was the plant family most used for egg laying. The researchers also associated greater treehopper abundance with the hot, rainy season (October–February); abundance declined in the cold, dry season (March–September), and few adults and nymphs were observed for one to two months after frost. These observations belong to that site and study period, not to all of Brazil or specifically to the focal species.
