Orcas are still smashing up boats – and we’ve finally worked out why

Iberian orcas are most likely engaging in socially learned, play-like rudder behavior—not seeking revenge or attacking people. Encounters can still cause serious damage, and no response is guaranteed to prevent it.

The Iberian orcas involved in boat encounters are most likely engaging in a socially learned, play-like behavior focused on rudders—not attacking people or seeking revenge. Scientists have narrowed down the explanation, but have not proved a single trigger or found a maneuver that reliably prevents damage.

The behavior has continued since it was first recorded in May 2020. It can still cause serious damage or sink a boat, so crews should check current local guidance and prioritize immediate navigational safety.

What the orcas are actually doing

This is not a worldwide killer-whale habit. It has been documented mainly in the small Iberian subpopulation around Spain, Portugal, Morocco and the Strait of Gibraltar. The population numbers fewer than 50 animals, with roughly 15 individuals repeatedly identified in vessel interactions.

The pattern is unusually specific:

  • The whales often approach from astern.
  • They focus on the rudder rather than the crew.
  • Sailing boats are affected far more often than other vessels.
  • Some interactions end when the whales lose interest, while others continue for an hour or more.

Orca Ibérica’s compiled data lists monohulls at about 72% of recorded interactions and catamarans at 14%. Spade rudders account for approximately 67% of recorded rudder types.

The strongest concentration is among sailing boats, especially medium-sized vessels, boats under roughly 15 metres, and vessels moving at typical sailing speeds of around six knots. No reliable hull-colour preference has been established, and no particular paint or antifouling colour is known to prevent interactions.

Why scientists think it is a learned fad

An international workshop held by Spanish and Portuguese authorities, killer-whale scientists and management officials on February 6–8, 2024, found no evidence of aggressive intent. It assessed the behavior as more consistent with play, socializing and social transmission than an attack on people or an attempt to sink boats.

The leading explanation is:

  1. One or more orcas began manipulating a boat’s rudder.
  2. Other young whales watched and copied the behavior.
  3. The rudder’s movement and resistance—and possibly the boat’s reaction—provided feedback that reinforced the behavior.
  4. The behavior spread socially through part of the group.

Orcas are highly social animals that learn from one another, so a novel activity can spread like a temporary cultural trend or “fad”. The workshop also suggested that abundant prey, especially Atlantic bluefin tuna, may have left the whales more time for exploration or play. That is a possible contributing factor, not a proven cause.

It is misleading to call these attacks

The word “attack” suggests aggression toward people, which the observed behavior does not support. The orcas appear focused on the rudder and normally do not pursue or injure crew members after an interaction ends. There have been no known direct, intentional attacks on humans by the Iberian orcas involved.

That does not mean encounters are harmless. A rudder can be bent or torn away, causing steering failure, hull damage or flooding. More than 700 vessel interactions have been logged since 2020, though that includes everything from a brief approach or nudge to prolonged contact. At least eight boats had reportedly been lost in these encounters by late July 2026.

There is no evidence that the whales are deliberately trying to sink vessels. Sinking is generally a consequence of rudder destruction, loss of steering, hull damage or flooding.

What to do if orcas approach a boat

There is no universally successful response, and official and expert guidance has differed by country and changed over time. Follow current local instructions, while prioritizing immediate navigational safety.

Spanish guidance: move away when safe

The 2024 Spanish-led workshop recommended that crews move away from the encounter area as quickly as possible when safe, aiming to get at least 2–3 kilometres away. In the Gulf of Cádiz or Strait of Gibraltar, it advised moving toward the coast or another area where rescue would be easier. Spanish guidance has also advised motoring toward shallower water when conditions permit. Moving away may reduce damage, but is not guaranteed to end an interaction.

Orca Ibérica and Portuguese guidance: slow or stop when conditions permit

Orca Ibérica and Portugal’s ICNF-backed protocol advise the following when conditions allow:

  1. Slow down or stop the engine.
  2. Slow, furl or lower the sails.
  3. Turn off the autopilot.
  4. Allow the rudder to move freely.
  5. Keep hands away from the wheel or tiller.
  6. Keep a low profile and stay quiet.
  7. Do not shout, strike the water or throw anything.
  8. Contact authorities on VHF Channel 16 or by calling 112.
  9. Wait until the whales have moved away before restarting or continuing.

Stopping is not guaranteed to work. Some encounters have ended after boats stopped and went quiet, while others continued for an hour or more or caused serious damage. Orca Ibérica’s older compiled data suggested stopping might slightly reduce serious damage, but the difference was not statistically conclusive. Do not stop if doing so would create an immediate danger from rocks, shipping, weather or another vessel.

What not to try

Idea Why it is not a reliable solution
Reverse away Reports are mixed, reversing can be dangerous in open water, and it may breach local rules except in an emergency.
Use pingers or continuous noise Noise makers are not proven deterrents. Noise could habituate the whales, attract them to boats, disturb other marine life or damage hearing. Some devices require authorization.
Throw objects or hit the water This can injure the whales, endanger the crew and potentially reinforce the behavior.
Use explosives or electrical devices These are dangerous, potentially illegal and not an acceptable wildlife-management response.
Rely on paint or colour No hull colour or antifouling shade has been shown to prevent an interaction.

Check current regional notices before departure, follow temporary exclusion or routing measures, carry working communications equipment and report every interaction. Better reporting helps researchers identify patterns and test mitigation methods.

Is the “revenge” explanation true?

The story that an orca called White Gladis taught others to retaliate after a traumatic collision has attracted attention. A defensive or trauma-related origin was considered by some earlier researchers, but remains speculative and is not the explanation supported by most researchers involved in the current scientific assessment.

Researchers have not proved one precise trigger. Their best-supported explanation is a rudder-focused behavior that appears to have spread socially among a small number of whales and may be maintained by play, curiosity and physical feedback from the rudder.

Why the research still matters

Iberian orcas are critically endangered, making harmful deterrents especially troubling even when crews are frightened or facing expensive damage. Current recommendations emphasize avoiding encounters, reducing risk without harming the whales, and gathering better evidence about boat designs, locations, speeds and responses.

The behavior remains active. The Cruising Association recorded 133 interactions during 2025 while receiving reports for only 19 of them, suggesting substantial under-reporting. In July 2026, a yacht was sunk off Galicia after its rudder was destroyed, while a second vessel nearby required rescue.

Scientists have narrowed the explanation, not solved every part of the mystery: the behavior is most likely socially transmitted play-like activity focused on vulnerable rudders, not a coordinated campaign to attack humans or sink boats.

FAQ

Are orcas attacking boats because they want revenge?

There is no good evidence that revenge is the cause. The strongest current explanation is that rudder manipulation began with one or more whales and spread socially as a play-like fad.

Do Iberian orcas attack people?

There have been no known direct, intentional attacks on humans by the Iberian orcas involved. The behavior is still dangerous because rudder damage can cause loss of steering, flooding or sinking.

Should a boat stop or move away if orcas approach?

Guidance differs. Spanish authorities have recommended moving away when safe, while Orca Ibérica and Portuguese guidance advise slowing or stopping, lowering sails and keeping quiet when conditions permit. Neither approach is guaranteed, so follow current local instructions and prioritize navigational safety.

Can special paint, noise or a pinger stop an interaction?

No hull colour, paint scheme or electronic deterrent has been proven reliable. Noise devices may habituate or attract whales, disturb other animals or require legal authorization. Do not throw objects or use explosives or harmful electrical devices.
