The Orangutan Foundation announced the footage on May 17, describing it as the first time its teams had captured this family scene in the park. It is evidence that breeding occurred there—not proof of a population increase or of the species’ long-term security.
What did the trail cameras capture?
The footage shows an adult female Bornean clouded leopard with two offspring. The Orangutan Foundation said its teams had recorded clouded leopards in the park before, but this was their first recording there of a mother with two young. The primary account is the Foundation’s May 17, 2024 announcement; the recording itself was made April 9.
The observation matters because young animals in the footage provide direct evidence of reproduction in this forest. It is a single camera-trap record, however, and cannot establish how many clouded leopards live in the park, whether their numbers are rising, or whether the local population is secure.
Where was the family recorded?
The camera trap was in Tanjung Puting National Park in Indonesian Borneo. The Foundation says it uses camera-trap research throughout the park to assess species diversity and distribution, a useful approach in dense forest where animals can be difficult to observe directly. Its announcement does not identify the camera’s make or model.

Which clouded leopard is it, and what is its conservation status?
The animal is the Bornean subspecies, Neofelis diardi borneensis, of the Sunda clouded leopard, Neofelis diardi. Taxonomic level matters when discussing its status. The Orangutan Foundation describes the Bornean subspecies as Endangered. The IUCN/SSC Cat Specialist Group account lists the Sunda clouded leopard species as Vulnerable and both recognized subspecies as Endangered. That account cites a 2015 IUCN assessment (version 2024-2), and cautions that knowledge of ecology, abundance, population dynamics and conservation status remains limited.
A Felidae Conservation Fund profile dated August 20, 2021 labels the Bornean clouded leopard Vulnerable, illustrating why a status label should be tied to the source and taxonomic scope rather than presented without qualification. IUCN categories describe assessed extinction risk; they are not counts of animals at a particular site. The IUCN Red List guidance on assessment summaries explains how to interpret assessment information and categories.

How many clouded leopards are there?
The Cat Specialist Group cites an estimate of 4,500 mature individuals for the Sunda clouded leopard from the 2015 IUCN assessment. This is a range-wide extrapolation, not a current census and not a Borneo-only or Tanjung Puting count. The same account stresses uncertainty around abundance and population dynamics. The sources reporting the camera-trap record provide no current population estimate for Tanjung Puting.
Why does a mother with young matter?
Finding a mother with two offspring confirms that reproduction took place at this location and offers conservationists a valuable observation of a rarely encountered forest predator. It does not show that conservation actions caused the sighting or that the wider population is recovering.

A. Yoga Perdana, Research Manager for the Orangutan Foundation, said: “The clouded leopard is an arboreal species and excellent hunter on the ground that plays an important role in maintaining the ecosystem. As one of the rarest species to find, being able to see a female and cubs gives us evidence that they are healthy and actively breeding.” The footage supports the breeding observation; it is not a comprehensive assessment of the animals’ health or a survey of the population.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What threatens the species?
The Orangutan Foundation identifies deforestation-related habitat loss as a threat to this forest-dependent cat. The Cat Specialist Group also lists habitat loss and illegal trade, and points to the importance of habitat corridors and further research. A family recording is encouraging, but it cannot show that these pressures have eased.
