Blue whales are the largest animals known to have ever lived, reaching about 110 feet long and feeding mainly on tiny krill. NOAA Fisheries reports that they inhabit every ocean except the Arctic, and that many populations migrate seasonally, though their movements vary.

Here are 11 facts about Balaenoptera musculus, including what blue whales eat, how they travel, and the threats they face.

11 blue whale facts

1. Blue whales are the largest animals ever known

The blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus, is the largest member of the rorqual family and the largest animal known to have lived on Earth, according to NOAA Fisheries. Rorquals are baleen whales with pleated throats that let them take in large volumes of water while feeding.

Blue whales are larger than any other known animal, though comparisons with incomplete fossils can be difficult. Their size is especially striking because they feed mostly on small crustaceans rather than large prey.

2. The largest blue whales can reach about 110 feet long

The largest individuals can reach about 110 feet and weigh up to 330,000 pounds. Antarctic blue whales tend to be larger than those in the North Atlantic and North Pacific, where individuals generally reach about 90 feet and weigh more than 100,000 pounds, according to NOAA Fisheries.

Females are generally larger than males, a pattern common among baleen whales.

3. Blue whales filter-feed on krill

Blue whales eat mostly krill—small, shrimp-like marine crustaceans. Fish and copepods may occasionally supplement their diet, according to NOAA Fisheries.

They do not have teeth. Instead, rows of baleen plates hang from the roof of the mouth and strain krill from seawater.

4. A large blue whale may eat up to six tons of krill in one day

The biggest blue whales may consume up to six tons of krill in a day, according to NOAA Fisheries. To feed, a whale lunges into a dense swarm with its mouth open.

Its throat pleats expand to hold water and krill. The whale then forces the water back out through its baleen, leaving prey behind.

5. Blue whales live in every ocean except the Arctic

Blue whales occur in every ocean except the Arctic Ocean. Their distribution generally follows areas where krill are concentrated, although some populations’ movements remain poorly understood, according to NOAA Fisheries.

6. Many blue whales migrate seasonally

Many blue whales feed in polar waters during summer and travel toward lower-latitude waters in winter. This is not a rule for every whale: migration varies among populations, and some individuals may not migrate every year, according to NOAA Fisheries.

7. Their calls may travel up to 1,000 miles

Blue whales are among the loudest animals on Earth. Their low-frequency pulses, groans, and moans may be detectable by other whales as far as 1,000 miles away under favorable ocean conditions, according to NOAA Fisheries.

That distance is an estimate, not a guaranteed communication range; conditions in the ocean affect how far sound travels.

8. Blue whales usually move slowly, but can sprint

Blue whales typically travel at about five miles per hour but can exceed 20 miles per hour in short bursts, according to NOAA Fisheries.

They are more often seen alone or in pairs than in large groups.

10. Blue whale calves develop before birth for about a year

Gestation lasts approximately 10 to 12 months. Calves are probably weaned at about six to seven months, and females generally produce a calf every two to three years, according to NOAA Fisheries.

11. Blue whales are still endangered

Blue whales remain endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Their main current threats include vessel strikes, fishing-gear entanglement, and ocean noise, according to NOAA Fisheries.

Because blue whales reproduce slowly, preventing avoidable losses and protecting their habitat matters to their recovery.
