What the 2023 Prehistoric Spider Fossil Really Reveals

The fossil is Arthrolycosa wolterbeeki, a late Carboniferous spider from Germany described in 2023. It preserves bristle-covered legs and spinnerets, but the published description does not establish that the animal was giant—and the fragile specimen is not wholly intact. Its spinnerets are especially important: they support identifying it as a true spider rather than a spider-like arachnid.

What was found, and where?

Jason A. Dunlop formally described Arthrolycosa wolterbeeki in a paper published on 16 July 2023. It is the first formally named Palaeozoic spider from Germany. The fossil came from the Piesberg quarry near Wallenhorst, in Lower Saxony. Dunlop assigns the rocks to the late Carboniferous, Moscovian stage, and to the Osnabrück Formation (Westphalian D in regional stratigraphy). The paper does not give an exact numerical age; describing it as about 310 million years old is a rounded figure used in secondary coverage, not a precise age established by the paper. Read the scientific description.

The species name honors Dr Timotheus K. T. Wolterbeek, who collected the specimen. Its type specimen, catalogued as MB.A. 4298, is held in the palaeontological collections of Berlin’s Museum für Naturkunde.

Was it really a giant spider with intact hairy legs?

“Giant” is not supported by the formal description. Dunlop describes a relatively compact body and provides no body-length estimate that would substantiate the headline’s implication. The fossil is scientifically notable for the anatomical details it preserves, not for a demonstrated exceptional size.

“Hairy” refers to setae: bristle-like structures on the elongated legs. These are visible in the fossil, but “still intact” overstates its condition. The specimen is preserved as a part and counterpart, as a thin coating of gümbelite. The paper describes this material as mechanically weak and prone to flaking, so the fossil is fragile even though identifiable anatomical features remain.

Which features identify it as a true spider?

Spinnerets provide the key evidence

The fossil preserves visible spinnerets, the silk-producing structures at the rear of a spider’s abdomen. Their presence is central to the taxonomic identification. Dunlop writes: “As noted above, the presence of spinnerets (Fig. 3c) is good evidence for treating the new fossil as a genuine spider”. The specimen appears to preserve at least one pair, and possibly two pairs, of relatively long spinnerets made up of multiple elements.

Legs and abdomen add detail

The paper describes elongated, setose legs, with the first leg longer than the second and third, as well as tubercles along the posterior margin of the abdomen. Together with the spinnerets, these details make the fossil informative for identifying and comparing an early spider.

Why does this fossil matter?

In the context of his 2023 paper, Dunlop called A. wolterbeeki only the twelfth Carboniferous species that could be assigned unequivocally to true spiders (Araneae). That count reflects the state of the record described in that paper, not a permanent total. The rarity of confidently identifiable Carboniferous spiders makes the preserved diagnostic anatomy significant.

The paper discusses similarities with living mesotheles, an early-branching group of spiders, but anatomical comparison does not establish that A. wolterbeeki was a direct ancestor of modern spiders. The evidence supports its classification and comparison, not a direct ancestry claim. An institutional announcement about the discovery also summarizes its German context.
