Watching a puppy eat poop is unpleasant, but the behavior—called coprophagia—is common enough that it is not automatically a sign of illness. A 2018 owner survey found that about 23% of dogs had been seen eating feces at least once, while 16% were considered frequent stool eaters.

In puppies, curiosity and scavenging are often the explanation. Still, parasites, poor digestion, inadequate food, and certain illnesses can contribute. The most effective response is straightforward: prevent access, reward your puppy for moving away after toileting, clean up immediately, and involve your veterinarian if the habit is persistent or accompanied by other symptoms.

Why do puppies eat poop?

Puppies explore with their mouths. Feces have strong smells and may contain partially digested food, so they can be interesting to a young scavenger. A puppy may also learn the habit by repeatedly finding stool in the yard, by investigating a cat’s litter box, or by copying normal maternal behavior: mother dogs commonly eat their puppies’ feces during the first weeks after birth.

Many puppies grow out of occasional stool-eating as they mature. The behavior is more likely to continue, however, when a puppy has frequent access to feces or discovers that eating it produces an exciting reaction from people.

Attention and learned behavior

Shouting, chasing, or trying to wrestle a stool from a puppy’s mouth can accidentally turn the incident into a game. Some puppies learn that poop reliably brings their owner running. Others begin swallowing it quickly because they expect someone to take it away.

Fear caused by house-training punishment

Harsh toilet training can make coprophagia worse. If a puppy is yelled at or has its nose rubbed in an accident, it may try to remove the evidence or become anxious about eliminating in front of people. Use calm supervision and reward-based house-training instead.

Hunger, digestion, or illness

Medical causes deserve more attention when the behavior is frequent, starts suddenly, or occurs with other changes. Possible contributors include:

  • not receiving enough food or eating an unbalanced diet;
  • intestinal parasites;
  • gastrointestinal disease or poor nutrient absorption;
  • exocrine pancreatic insufficiency;
  • conditions that increase appetite, including diabetes or Cushing disease; and
  • some medications, especially corticosteroids.

Repeatedly large, soft, foul-smelling, or poorly digested-looking stools are useful details to report to your veterinarian.

Is it dangerous for a puppy to eat poop?

Eating its own stool once is usually less concerning than eating feces from another animal. Stool from dogs, cats, wildlife, or livestock can carry parasites, infectious organisms, or toxins—even when it looks normal.

Keep parasite prevention current and ask your veterinarian how often your puppy needs fecal testing. The Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends fecal examinations at least four times during a puppy’s first year, along with veterinarian-directed parasite control and prompt removal of feces.

Call a veterinarian promptly if your puppy has repeated vomiting or diarrhea, blood in vomit or stool, marked lethargy, signs of dehydration, cannot keep water down, or may have eaten feces contaminated with a toxin.

How to stop a puppy from eating poop

1. Prevent access

Management is the foundation of treatment. Every time a puppy eats feces, the habit gets another rehearsal. For the next several weeks, make that opportunity difficult:

  • Take your puppy outside on a leash.
  • Stay nearby while it eliminates instead of sending it out alone.
  • Call the puppy away as soon as it finishes.
  • Pick up the stool immediately.
  • Clean indoor accident areas thoroughly.
  • Keep the puppy away from communal dog-walking areas where feces may be present.
  • Block access to cat litter boxes with a closed door, baby gate, or a location the puppy cannot reach.
  • Remove wildlife or livestock feces from areas where the puppy explores whenever possible.

2. Use the same post-potty routine

Give your puppy a predictable alternative to turning around and eating the stool:

  1. Wait for the puppy to finish eliminating.
  2. Say its name or use a cheerful recall cue.
  3. Move several steps away from the stool.
  4. Ask for an easy behavior, such as “sit.”
  5. Deliver a high-value treat immediately.
  6. Keep the puppy occupied while you pick up the stool.

The important timing is the reward: it should arrive immediately after the puppy leaves the feces. Over time, finishing the job will predict coming to you and getting paid, rather than turning around to scavenge.

3. Teach “leave it” and “drop it” before you need them

Practice these cues indoors with safe objects, not with feces in the puppy’s mouth. Offer a toy, present a better treat, and reward the moment your puppy disengages. Gradually work around more distracting objects.

If you repeatedly shout “leave it” while chasing a puppy that has feces, you may increase excitement and encourage a chase. You may also cause the puppy to swallow the stool faster. Training away from the problem gives the cue a useful history before you test it outdoors.

4. Check food, exercise, and enrichment

Feed a complete, balanced food made for your puppy’s life stage. Your veterinarian can check whether the amount is appropriate for the puppy’s age, size, growth rate, and body condition. Do not assume that coprophagia proves a vitamin deficiency, and do not add supplements or make a major diet change without veterinary advice.

Food puzzles, safe chews, play, exercise, and supervised exploration can reduce scavenging linked to boredom or insufficient stimulation. They do not replace stool removal, but they give your puppy better outlets for investigating and using its mouth.

What not to do

  • Do not punish, yell, chase, or rub your puppy’s nose in stool. These responses can create fear, reinforce attention-seeking, or encourage the puppy to hide accidents.
  • Do not rely on pepper or unpleasant substances placed on feces. In the 2018 owner survey, reported success for chasing a dog away, peppering stool, or using punishment was only about 1–2%.
  • Do not assume popular food additives are proven cures. Pineapple, yogurt, cottage cheese, papaya, breath mints, meat tenderizer, and vitamin supplements have not been established as reliable treatments.
  • Do not overpromise commercial stool-deterrent tablets or powders. Eleven marketed additives in the survey had reported success rates from 0% to 2%. That was an owner survey, not a controlled clinical trial, and it did not verify whether products were used exactly as directed.

Rewarding a dog for leaving feces alone performed better in the survey than punishment or pepper, but the reported success rate was still only about 4%. In practice, supervision and immediate cleanup remain more dependable than trying to alter the taste of stool.

When should a veterinarian examine a puppy?

Book a veterinary appointment if your puppy:

  • eats feces frequently or the habit does not improve with consistent management;
  • begins eating feces suddenly;
  • is losing weight or failing to grow;
  • has repeated diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, or reduced appetite;
  • seems unusually hungry or thirsty;
  • passes unusually large, soft, foul-smelling, or poorly digested-looking stools;
  • eats feces from wildlife, livestock, or an unknown animal; or
  • is overdue for parasite prevention or fecal testing.

A fecal examination is a basic part of checking for parasites. Depending on the signs and the puppy’s exposure, the veterinarian may also recommend blood tests or additional gastrointestinal testing.

FAQ

Is it normal for puppies to eat their own poop?

Occasional stool-eating can be normal exploratory or scavenging behavior in puppies, and many stop as they mature. It should still be managed because repeated access can make the habit persistent and feces from other animals may transmit parasites or infections.

Does eating poop mean my puppy has a vitamin deficiency?

Not necessarily. Curiosity, scavenging, access to feces, attention from people, and house-training punishment are common explanations. Inadequate food, poor absorption, parasites, and illness are possible, so persistent behavior or other symptoms warrant a veterinary examination.

What should I do if my puppy has poop in its mouth?

Stay calm and do not chase or yell. Use a previously trained, cheerful recall or trade cue, reward the puppy for moving toward you, and then remove the remaining stool. Practice “leave it” and “drop it” with safe objects at other times.

Can pineapple or a stool-deterrent supplement stop coprophagia?

These products are not proven reliable cures. Research based on owner reports found very low success rates for several commercial additives, and common suggestions such as pineapple, yogurt, or vitamin supplements should not replace supervision, immediate cleanup, training, and veterinary care when needed.

The Bottom Line

Most puppy poop-eating starts with exploration, scavenging, or learned access rather than a serious disorder. Take the puppy out on a leash, stay with it, call it away as soon as it finishes, reward that choice, and remove the stool immediately. Avoid punishment and unproven additives. If the behavior is persistent, sudden, or paired with weight loss, abnormal stools, vomiting, diarrhea, or intense hunger, arrange a veterinary check and fecal testing.
