Dog boots are useful for more than winter walks. The right pair can protect paw pads from hot pavement, road salt, sharp gravel, ice, and rough trails—but only if they stay on, allow normal movement, and fit without rubbing.

These six picks cover the main jobs: all-season trail use, snow and ice, city walks, maximum adjustability, and budget protection. There is no universal best boot. A narrow-footed dog, a broad-pawed dog, and a dog with dewclaws will often need different designs.

Best dog boots at a glance

Boot Best for Why it stands out Main drawback
Ruffwear Grip Trex All-season walking and hiking Secure closure, durable sole, breathable upper Can be too structured for dogs that dislike boots
Ruffwear Polar Trex Snow, ice, and frozen trails Insulated construction and aggressive traction Warmer and bulkier than an everyday boot
Muttluks Fleece-Lined Cold-weather walks Soft fit and fleece lining Leather-style sole needs drying and care
Kurgo Blaze Cross Active dogs and mixed terrain Flexible sole with a secure fastening system Sizing takes care because the shape is relatively narrow
Wagwear WagWellies Rain and city walks Waterproof rubber and simple slip-on design Not the best choice for steep, technical trails
QUMY Dog Boots Budget paw protection Low-cost set with adjustable straps and a rugged sole Fit and durability are less consistent than premium boots

Prices, colors, and size availability change. Measure your dog’s paws rather than choosing by breed or weight.

1. Ruffwear Grip Trex: best all-around dog boots

The Grip Trex is the strongest general-purpose choice for dogs that hike, walk on pavement, or need reliable protection from abrasive ground. Its rubber sole has a tread pattern designed for traction, while the upper is more breathable than a fully enclosed rubber boot.

The boot closes around the lower leg with a hook-and-loop strap. That matters because a boot that fits the paw but cannot be tightened securely will twist or fall off during a run. The structured sole also gives the dog more protection from sharp stones than thin fabric booties.

What to know before buying

  • Measure each paw; front and rear paws may not be the same size.
  • The firm sole may take longer for a dog to accept.
  • It is water-resistant and protective, but not an insulated deep-snow boot.

Choose the Grip Trex for everyday outdoor use when traction and durability matter more than a soft, sock-like feel.

2. Ruffwear Polar Trex: best for snow and ice

The Polar Trex is designed for cold conditions rather than warm-weather walking. Its insulated upper helps reduce exposure to freezing surfaces, and the sole provides traction on packed snow and icy ground. It is a better winter specialist than an all-season boot.

This is the pair to consider for dogs that regularly walk in sub-freezing conditions, particularly when salt, ice balls, and frozen crust irritate their feet. The gaiter-like design helps limit snow entering around the top of the boot, although no boot completely prevents buildup in every snow condition.

Limitations

Insulation adds bulk. Dogs that already resent footwear may accept a lighter boot more readily. For occasional trips across salted sidewalks, the Polar Trex can also be more boot than necessary. After walks, remove packed snow and dry the boots fully before storing them.

3. Muttluks Fleece-Lined: best soft winter boot

Muttluks are a good alternative for dogs that find rigid boots uncomfortable. The fleece-lined version has a softer, more flexible construction and a sole intended to protect against cold ground, salt, and light abrasion. It feels less like a miniature hiking shoe and more like a protective covering that conforms to the paw.

The flexible design can be helpful for small dogs and dogs with sensitive feet. It also reduces the stiff, high-stepping gait some dogs display in hard-soled boots. The trade-off is that soft boots may rotate more easily if the fit or strap tension is wrong.

Fit and maintenance

The boot should sit securely above the paw without pressing into the dewclaw area. Check the strap after a few minutes of walking. Because the sole and upper require care, do not leave a wet pair crumpled in a bag; open them out and let them dry completely.

4. Kurgo Blaze Cross: best for active dogs

The Blaze Cross is aimed at dogs that need paw protection without a completely rigid boot. Its flexible sole and fastening system make it suitable for walks that move between pavement, dirt, and rougher ground.

A flexible boot can produce a more natural stride, but flexibility does not compensate for poor sizing. If the boot is too loose, the foot can slide forward and the closure may rub. If it is too short, the toes press against the front of the boot on descents.

QUMY Dog Shoes for Hot Pavement, Dog Snow Boots & Paw Protectors for Winter
  • Please be sure to measure the width of your dog's paws carefully, it is key to choosing the correct size for your dog, weight can only be used as an additional reference; Size 1: 1.8''x2.3''(W*L) for 11-23 lbs; size 2: 1.9''x2.4''(W*L) for 18-27 lbs; size 3: 2.0''x2.5''(W*L) for 23-33 lb; size 4: 2.2''x2.6''(W*L) for 31-40 lbs; size 5: 2.4''x2.8''(W*L) for 40-55 lbs; size 6: 2.6''x3.0''(W*L) for 52-65 lbs; size 7: 2.8''x3.2"(W*L) for 63-75 lbs; size 8: 3.0''x3.3"(W*L) for 74-88 lbs

  • QUALITY: The dog boots have a rugged sole and high quality fabrics that are then sewn together to ensure they are ready for your adventure
  • FASHIONABLE: QUMY dog boots are with cute pet paw embroidery, paws side is the outside, soft and hand washable

Use this style for active walks and moderate trail use. For prolonged exposure to deep snow, choose an insulated winter boot instead; for hot pavement, inspect the sole and your dog’s gait frequently during the first outings.

5. Wagwear WagWellies: best waterproof city boot

WagWellies are rubber rain boots for dogs that need protection from wet sidewalks, puddles, and dirty urban surfaces. Their open, wellie-style shape makes them quick to put on and easy to rinse. They are especially useful for keeping muddy feet out of the car or house.

The simple design is also the reason they are not my first choice for technical hiking. A slip-on rubber boot does not provide the same wraparound support or adjustable hold as a performance boot. Dogs with unusually narrow legs may also be more likely to lose them unless the fit is exact.

These work best for short and moderate walks in wet conditions. Introduce them indoors first, because the unusual shape can make dogs lift their paws or walk stiffly at the beginning.

6. QUMY Dog Boots: best budget option

QUMY’s dog boots are a practical low-cost way to try footwear before investing in a premium set. They typically combine a protective rubberized sole with fabric uppers and adjustable straps. The design is suitable for occasional pavement, gravel, snow, or salt exposure.

The compromises are normal for this price category: sizing can be less predictable, materials may wear sooner, and the boots may not stay on as reliably during vigorous activity. Inspect the stitching, sole, and straps regularly, especially after walking on wet or salted roads.

They make sense for occasional use or for a dog that needs temporary protection. If a dog hikes frequently, loses boots repeatedly, or has a paw injury requiring consistent coverage, a more structured boot is usually the better long-term purchase.

How to choose dog boots

Measure the paw correctly

  1. Place the dog’s paw on a sheet of paper while the dog is standing and bearing weight.
  2. Mark the front and rear of the paw, including the longest toes.
  3. Measure the widest part.
  4. Compare both measurements with the manufacturer’s size chart.
  5. Repeat for all four paws if the brand allows different sizes.

Do not measure while the paw is lifted. A standing paw spreads more, and that is the space the boot must accommodate. A boot should cover the paw without forcing the toes together or allowing the foot to slide from side to side.

Match the boot to the hazard

Walking condition Look for
Hot pavement Heat-resistant sole, secure fit, and enough protection to prevent contact with the surface
Snow and ice Insulation, traction, and a top that limits snow entry
Salted sidewalks Water-resistant materials and a sole that keeps chemicals away from the pads
Rocky trails Structured sole, strong closure, and abrasion-resistant upper
Rain and mud Waterproof construction that is easy to rinse and dry

How to get a dog used to boots

  1. Let the dog sniff the boots and reward calm investigation.
  2. Touch one boot to a paw, reward, and remove it.
  3. Put one boot on for a few seconds indoors.
  4. Gradually add the remaining boots.
  5. Use treats and a short indoor walk to build a normal stride.
  6. Start outdoors for only a few minutes.

High stepping, shaking the paws, and trying to remove the boots are common at first. Persistent licking, redness, swelling, a shortened stride, or a boot that repeatedly rotates indicates a fit or rubbing problem. Stop and check rather than tightening the straps indefinitely.

Dog boot safety and care

  • Check the paws after every early wearing session for redness, dampness, cuts, or rubbed skin.
  • Do not leave boots on for extended periods without checking circulation and moisture.
  • Remove snow and ice from between the toes before putting boots on.
  • Wash or rinse salt and grit from the boots after walks.
  • Dry boots completely before storing them.
  • Do not use boots as a substitute for veterinary care if a paw is bleeding, burned, cracked, or infected.

For hot weather, boots can protect against pavement burns, but they can also retain heat. Walk during cooler hours, check the dog’s comfort, and stop if the dog pants heavily or becomes reluctant to continue.

What about dogs with double coats?

Boots protect the feet, not the whole dog. They do not make a dog safe in extreme heat or cold, and they do not eliminate the need to check for ice balls, salt, or cracked pads. Keep the rest of the dog’s coat appropriate for the season and ask a veterinarian about protection for dogs with circulation problems, neuropathy, or existing paw injuries.

FAQ

Do dogs really need boots?

Not every dog needs them. Boots are useful when pavement is dangerously hot, trails are abrasive, snow or ice is accumulating, or road salt is irritating the paw pads. For ordinary mild-weather walks, healthy dogs may do fine without footwear.

How should dog boots fit?

The boot should cover the entire paw, leave the toes room to spread, and stay centered when the dog walks. It should be snug above the paw but not tight enough to cause swelling, redness, or cold toes. Check the fit after several minutes because some boots loosen or rotate.

Can a dog wear boots all day?

It is better not to leave boots on all day without supervision. Moisture, heat, rubbing, and restricted movement can cause problems. Remove them regularly to inspect and dry the paws, and follow any veterinarian’s instructions for medical booties.

Why does my dog walk strangely in boots?

Dogs often lift their paws or walk stiffly while learning the unfamiliar sensation. Short indoor practice sessions usually help. If the abnormal gait continues, check that the boots are not too heavy, short, loose, or tight, and look for rubbing.

The Bottom Line

Ruffwear Grip Trex is the best starting point for most active dogs because it combines a protective sole with a secure, adjustable fit. Choose Ruffwear Polar Trex for regular snow and ice, Muttluks Fleece-Lined for a softer winter feel, WagWellies for wet city walks, and QUMY if you want an inexpensive introduction to dog boots. Whatever you buy, accurate paw measurement and a gradual introduction matter more than the brand name.
