Choosing a name for a fish is easier when you start with what makes that fish distinctive: its species, color, size, markings, or behavior. A betta with flowing fins may suit a regal name, while an energetic school of danios might inspire something playful. This list contains 300 pet-fish name ideas, including funny names, food names, character references, names for bettas and goldfish, and options for fish kept in pairs.

These are pet names, not fish species. Before bringing a fish home, research its particular needs for tank size, filtration, temperature, diet, water quality, and compatible tank mates.

How to choose the right fish name

  1. Look at appearance: Color, fin shape, spots, stripes, and size can all suggest a name.
  2. Watch behavior: Is your fish shy, curious, speedy, territorial, or constantly exploring?
  3. Keep it easy to say: A short name that everyone in the household can remember is usually the most practical.
  4. Try it for a day: Say the name beside the aquarium and see whether it still feels right after you have observed your fish.
  5. Name each fish individually: If you keep a group, choose names with different sounds so they are easy to tell apart.

Some names below recur across categories, such as names inspired by color or pop culture. Pop-culture references are labeled so you know the source.

Fish names for pairs

These work as coordinated names for two fish, but check compatibility before housing fish together. A name pair does not mean the fish have identical care requirements.

A quick care reminder before you name your fish

Names are fun, but the aquarium setup should come first. Fish need care based on species rather than appearance or size alone. The commonly repeated rule of one gallon per inch of fish is only a rough guideline; it does not account for swimming behavior, aggression, decorations, filtration, or the needs of a particular species.

Bettas should not be kept in bowls or unheated, unfiltered containers. Current veterinary guidance lists 2.5 gallons as a minimum, with 5–10 gallons ideal, along with a heater, gentle filter, lid, and conditioned water. Male bettas are often kept alone; female groups and community arrangements require suitable space, hiding places, compatible tank mates, and close observation.

Goldfish also do not belong in bowls or small unfiltered aquariums. Aqueon recommends at least 20 gallons for an adult common goldfish and 10 gallons for an adult fancy goldfish. Tank size, temperature, filtration, feeding, and compatibility should always be checked for the exact species you keep.

What are some good names for a betta fish?

Majesty, Indigo, Velvet, Sapphire, Phoenix, Lotus, Shimmer, Crown, Tempest, and Solstice all suit a betta’s striking colors or flowing fins.

Can I keep a betta or goldfish in a bowl?

A bowl is not an appropriate default home for either. Bettas need stable, clean, heated and filtered water; goldfish need substantially more space and filtration, with recommended volumes depending on whether the fish is common or fancy.

Are all 300 names suitable for any fish?

They are name ideas, not care recommendations. Any name can suit any fish, but the fish’s species-specific requirements for tank size, water conditions, diet, and tank mates still need to be met.

The Bottom Line

The best fish name is one you enjoy saying and that fits your pet’s appearance or personality. Start with the 300 ideas above, narrow the list to a few favorites, and then make sure your aquarium meets the needs of the species before choosing the final name.
