What to Do If Another Dog Bites Your Dog

Separate the dogs with barriers, control bleeding, and arrange prompt veterinary care for every bite—even a tiny puncture. Flush only stable minor wounds with saline or clean water, and contact local authorities about rabies or reporting questions.

A dog bite needs veterinary attention even when it leaves only a tiny puncture. Teeth can push bacteria deep into tissue, damage muscles or ribs, and create injuries hidden beneath a nearly normal-looking surface.

First separate the dogs without putting yourself in reach of their mouths. Then control any bleeding, assess your dog for an emergency, and contact a veterinarian. The steps below apply whether the bite happened at a park, on a walk, or in your own home.

1. Separate the dogs without getting bitten

Do not put your hands, face, or body between fighting dogs. Do not grab a collar near a dog’s mouth. Pain and adrenaline can make even a normally gentle dog bite the person trying to help.

Use distance and barriers instead:

  • Make a loud noise or spray water if that helps interrupt the fight.
  • Slide a large object—such as a board, chair, baby gate, or garbage-can lid—between the dogs.
  • Once they separate, move your dog behind a closed door, fence, vehicle, or other secure barrier.

Keep away from the other dog unless it is safely restrained by its owner or animal-control personnel. An injured, frightened, or highly aroused dog may bite again.

2. Decide whether this is an emergency

Go to an emergency veterinary hospital, or call one while you are leaving, if your dog has any of these signs:

Emergency sign Why it matters
Trouble breathing, collapse, severe weakness, or inability to stand May indicate shock, chest injury, blood loss, or internal damage.
Pale, gray, or blue gums Can signal poor oxygenation or circulation.
Heavy or uncontrolled bleeding A bite may have damaged a major blood vessel.
A puncture to the chest, abdomen, neck, groin, eye, or mouth These areas contain vital organs, airways, major vessels, or delicate structures.
Severe pain, continuous crying, or rapidly worsening distress May reflect deeper tissue damage than the skin wound suggests.
A limb your dog cannot use Possible fracture, joint injury, tendon damage, or severe pain.
A large skin flap, extensive tearing, or evidence that your dog was shaken Shaking can cause crushing injuries below the skin, even when the visible wound is limited.

A chest bite can cause a collapsed lung. Bites around the neck, face, legs, and joints can injure the airway, eyes, blood vessels, nerves, or joint spaces. If you are unsure how serious the wound is, treat it as urgent and call a veterinary clinic for direction.

3. Control bleeding while you travel

  1. Place clean gauze, a towel, or another clean cloth directly over the wound.
  2. Press firmly and continuously.
  3. If blood soaks through, put more material on top. Do not lift the first layer to inspect the wound.
  4. If practical, apply a firm temporary bandage—but not one tight enough to restrict circulation.

If something is stuck in the wound, leave it in place. Do not pull out a stick, piece of metal, or other embedded object; stabilize it as best you can and go to an emergency hospital.

Keep your dog as calm and still as possible. A painful dog may bite, so use a carrier, blanket, or other safe method of transport when appropriate. Do not muzzle a dog that is struggling to breathe, vomiting, or has an injury to its mouth.

4. Rinse a stable, minor-looking wound

If your dog is stable and the wound is not bleeding heavily, gently flush visible dirt and surface contamination with sterile saline or clean running water. This is only first aid—not a substitute for an examination.

Do not:

  • Put soap, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, or other potentially harmful substances into the wound.
  • Apply ointment unless a veterinarian tells you to.
  • Probe a puncture with a cotton swab or other object.
  • Shave deeply into the wound.
  • Glue, stitch, or otherwise close the puncture yourself.

Small bite holes can close rapidly and trap bacteria underneath. A clean-looking surface does not prove that the underlying tissue is uninjured.

5. Have your dog examined promptly

Call your regular veterinarian immediately, even if your dog seems comfortable and the bite looks like a pinprick. If the clinic is closed or your dog has any emergency signs, use an emergency hospital.

Dog teeth can create narrow punctures while crushing muscle, ribs, organs, or tissue beneath them. Bite wounds are also contaminated with bacteria. Without treatment, an infection can develop into an abscess or spread into surrounding tissue. Less common but serious complications include an infected joint, bone infection, infection in the chest, or infection in the abdominal cavity.

Earlier treatment generally improves the chance of uncomplicated healing. VCA identifies treatment within about six hours as having the best chance of an uncomplicated outcome. Do not wait for swelling, pus, or a fever before calling.

6. What treatment may involve

The veterinarian may clip the fur, flush the wound extensively, remove damaged tissue, prescribe pain relief, use antibiotics, place a drain, take X-rays or other imaging, or perform surgery.

A small puncture is sometimes deliberately left open so contaminated fluid can drain. Closing every bite immediately is not necessarily safe, particularly when the wound is dirty or deep. Your veterinarian will decide based on the wound’s location, depth, contamination, and the condition of the surrounding tissue.

Never give human pain relievers or leftover antibiotics unless a veterinarian specifically prescribes a medication and dose for your dog. Common human medicines can be dangerous for pets, and the wrong antibiotic may delay appropriate treatment.

7. Monitor the wound after the appointment

Follow the discharge instructions, prevent licking and chewing, and give prescribed medication exactly as directed. Contact the veterinary clinic promptly if you notice:

  • Increasing redness, swelling, heat, or pain
  • Blood, pus, or other discharge
  • A bad odor
  • Lethargy, fever, reduced appetite, or vomiting
  • Worsening lameness or reluctance to move
  • A wound that opens or suddenly becomes larger

These signs can mean that infection or deeper damage is progressing beyond the original bite.

8. Record information about the other dog

If it is safe, ask the other owner for their name, address, and phone number. Record the dog’s description and where it went. Ask for proof of current rabies vaccination, including the vaccine license number and the veterinarian who administered it.

9. Report the incident when appropriate

Contact local animal control or the police department, and follow any local reporting rules, particularly when:

  • The dog was stray, unknown, missing, or cannot be located.
  • The owner refuses to provide vaccination information.
  • The dog appeared sick, disoriented, unusually aggressive, or neurologically abnormal.
  • A person was bitten or scratched while separating the dogs.
  • The incident happened in a public place.

Rabies procedures and quarantine requirements vary by state and locality. Do not rely only on an owner’s verbal claim that the dog is vaccinated. Public-health officials may need records and may direct observation, confinement, testing, or other measures.

For a healthy dog, cat, or ferret that has exposed a person or pet, CDC veterinary guidance describes a 10-day confinement and observation period coordinated with public-health authorities. That is not an automatic rule for every situation or jurisdiction; contact the relevant local authority for instructions.

10. Check your dog’s rabies status

Tell the veterinarian whether your dog’s rabies vaccine is current, overdue, or undocumented. If public-health officials decide the biting animal could have exposed your dog to rabies, they determine the next step.

CDC guidance generally calls for an up-to-date exposed dog to receive an immediate booster and remain under owner supervision. Overdue or unvaccinated dogs require case-by-case public-health management. A bite from another dog is not automatically a rabies exposure, but the risk should not be dismissed when the dog is unknown, acting abnormally, recently imported, or unavailable for assessment.

If you were bitten while helping

Wash the bite or scratch immediately with soap and running water. For a possible rabies exposure, CDC recommends washing the area for 15 minutes and contacting a healthcare professional or local health department.

Seek urgent medical care for deep wounds, uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain, loss of function, signs of infection, uncertain rabies-vaccination status, or a bite from a sick, strange-acting, stray, or unavailable animal. Saliva entering broken skin, the eyes, mouth, or another open wound can also require medical advice.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assumption What is safer
“It is only a small puncture, so waiting is fine.” Arrange a prompt veterinary examination. Small punctures can hide crushing injuries and infection.
“The skin did not break, so there is no injury.” Have your dog checked if it was bitten, pinned, or shaken. Bruising and crushing can occur beneath intact skin.
“Hydrogen peroxide will clean it.” Use sterile saline or clean water for gentle flushing unless your veterinarian instructs otherwise.
“Every bite automatically needs antibiotics.” Let the veterinarian decide based on depth, location, contamination, and infection risk.
“A current rabies vaccine means no report or vet visit is needed.” Vaccination reduces risk but does not replace wound care or a public-health assessment.
“The 10-day rule applies automatically.” Ask animal control or the health department which observation and quarantine rules apply locally.

FAQ

Should I take my dog to the vet for a small bite wound?

Yes. Every dog bite should be assessed by a veterinarian because a narrow puncture can hide crushing damage or bacteria beneath the skin. Contact your regular veterinarian promptly, or use an emergency hospital for breathing problems, heavy bleeding, collapse, severe pain, chest or abdominal wounds, or other red flags.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I put on my dog’s bite wound?

For a stable dog with a minor-looking wound, gently flush visible contamination with sterile saline or clean water. Do not use soap, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, harsh disinfectants, ointments, or homemade wound closures unless a veterinarian specifically instructs you. Apply direct pressure with clean gauze or cloth if the wound is bleeding.

Can my dog get rabies from another dog bite?

A bite from another dog is not automatically a rabies exposure. Risk depends on the biting dog’s species, behavior, health, vaccination history, location, and whether public-health officials can assess or observe it. Tell your veterinarian your dog’s vaccination status and contact local animal control or the health department when the dog is unknown, unavailable, sick-acting, or vaccination records are uncertain.

What should I do if I was bitten while breaking up the fight?

Wash the wound immediately with soap and running water. For a possible rabies exposure, wash it for 15 minutes and contact a healthcare professional or local health department. Seek urgent care for deep wounds, uncontrolled bleeding, loss of function, signs of infection, or a bite from a stray, sick, strange-acting, or unavailable dog.

The Bottom Line

Separate the dogs with barriers, not your hands. Control bleeding, flush only stable minor wounds with saline or clean water, and arrange prompt veterinary care for every bite. Document the other dog’s information, report the incident when required, and contact public-health officials about rabies or quarantine questions. If you were bitten, wash the wound for 15 minutes and seek medical advice.
