The Dachshund—often called a Doxie, Wiener Dog, or Badger Dog—is a small hunting breed with a big personality. Its long back, short legs, strong nose, and bold temperament were developed for going to ground after badgers, not for being a decorative lapdog.

Dachshunds can be affectionate, funny, alert, and deeply devoted to their people. They can also be noisy, determined, prey-driven, difficult to house-train, and vulnerable to back problems. The right care routine focuses on controlled exercise, a lean body, positive training, and preventing repeated high-impact jumping.

Dachshund breed overview

Characteristic What to expect
Breed classification One Dachshund breed with standard and miniature size categories in AKC terminology
Standard size 16–32 pounds and 8–9 inches, according to the AKC breed profile
Miniature size 11 pounds or under and 5–6 inches, according to the AKC breed profile
Coat varieties Smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired
Typical lifespan 12–16 years, according to the AKC breed profile
Temperament Curious, friendly, spunky, intelligent, vigilant, and self-willed
Exercise needs Two moderate-length walks each day are generally sufficient for many adults, adjusted for age and condition
Major health concern Intervertebral disc disease, or IVDD

These breed-profile size ranges are not a substitute for assessing an individual dog. In the United States, a Miniature Dachshund is not a separate AKC breed. “Tweenie” is an informal term for a dog between the usual miniature and standard ranges. “Teacup,” “micro,” and similar labels are marketing terms rather than official varieties.

Appearance and coat types

The Dachshund’s defining outline is low to the ground, long in body, short of leg, and muscular. The breed standard wording reproduced by Dachshund Health UK describes Dachshunds as “intelligent, lively, courageous to the point of rashness, obedient.” That description makes sense when viewed through the breed’s history: these dogs were bred to pursue quarry into underground dens.

#1 Best Overall
Gardner Pet Dog Stairs for Small Dogs 16.5" H, 2 in 1 Transformable 3-Step Pet Stairs and ramp, Dog Steps for Couch (13-20 in) with Durable Non-Slip Waterproof Cover and CertiPUR-US Certified Foam
  • OEKO-TEX Certified Material: Safe and non-toxic, free from harmful chemicals, ensuring no harm to your pets and family members.
  • 2-In-1 Design: The 3-tier dog stairs feature an innovative 2-in-1 design, functioning both as traditional stairs and easily transforming into a gentle dog ramp. This versatile design is perfect for chairs and sofas, essentially offering two different heights and designs in one dog stair.
  • 35D High-Density Foam: These pet stairs features a soft, low-angle ramp design with 35D high-density foam, providing optimal support and reducing stress on your dog's joints. Ideal dog stairs for small dogs and medium dogs, especially those with knee injuries or older pets who need extra care.
  • No Assembly Required: The dog stairs for bed is convenient and hassle-free, simply unbox the pet steps, your furry friend can start using it right away. Due to vacuum compression, the surface of the puppy stairs may appear slightly wrinkled, and it will recover within 24-48 hours.
  • Machine-Washable & Waterproof Cover: The removable cover is equipped with a TPU waterproof layer to prevent leaks and is easy to clean—just toss pet stairs for high beds in the washing machine or hand wash. Note: The foam interior should not be cleaned.

There are three coat varieties:

  • Smooth-coated: The short coat is relatively low maintenance, though it sheds; wiping or using a grooming glove can help remove loose hair.
  • Longhaired: Feathering around the ears, chest, legs, and tail can tangle. Brush as needed, with more frequent brushing for thicker coats.
  • Wirehaired: Brush or comb regularly. Depending on the coat, it may need hand-stripping or plucking several times a year, with occasional beard and eyebrow trimming.

Dachshunds are not hypoallergenic. No coat variety reliably eliminates dander or shedding.

Dachshund temperament

A Dachshund may be small enough to carry but rarely behaves like a timid toy dog. Most are lively, observant, and ready to investigate anything that catches their attention. They often form strong bonds with their families and enjoy being involved in household activities.

The same traits that make a Doxie entertaining can make daily life challenging:

  • Independence: A Dachshund may understand a cue without agreeing that it is worth following.
  • Vocal alerting: Many bark at visitors, wildlife, noises, and activity outside the home.
  • Prey drive: Squirrels, rabbits, rodents, and sometimes cats can trigger a chase.
  • Persistence: A scent or interesting hole can be more rewarding than an owner’s recall cue.
  • Attachment: Some struggle when left alone for long periods and may bark or become destructive.

They can live successfully with other dogs and animals when socialized and introduced carefully. Small pets should not be assumed safe simply because a Dachshund has lived peacefully with them; supervision and secure separation remain important.

Are Dachshunds good family dogs?

They can be excellent companions for families that understand their physical limitations and independent nature. Older children who can handle a small, long-backed dog calmly are generally a better match than toddlers who may grab, drop, or climb on the dog.

Children should be taught not to pick up a Dachshund without help, pull its ears or tail, or encourage it to jump from furniture. Every interaction between a young child and a dog should be supervised. A Dachshund that feels cornered or mishandled may defend itself with a snap.

Exercise requirements

Dachshunds need regular exercise even though they are small. The AKC says two moderate-length walks each day are generally sufficient for many adults. Match activity to age, fitness, body condition, weather, and medical history; puppies should build activity gradually, and seniors may need less.

Good activities include:

  • Leash walks at a steady, comfortable pace
  • Sniffing games and supervised exploration
  • Short training sessions
  • Controlled fetch on a level, non-slip surface
  • Food puzzles and scent-based games

Exercise helps maintain fitness and build muscle that supports the back. The AKC advises preventing Dachshunds from running up and down stairs or jumping on and off furniture to avoid injury. A low, stable ramp is an optional access aid for furniture; it has not been shown to prevent IVDD.

Puppies need a gradual increase in activity while their bones and muscles develop. Avoid treating a young Dachshund like a miniature endurance athlete. Build duration and intensity progressively, and ask your veterinarian for advice if the puppy has an unusual gait, pain, or a known structural concern.

Back health and IVDD

Intervertebral disc disease is an important health issue many prospective Dachshund owners should understand. The Royal Kennel Club describes IVDD as deterioration of the spinal discs, which act as shock-absorbing structures. It reports that the Dachshund breed council’s 2018 DachsLife survey found IVDD in 21.1% of 1,173 Dachshunds over three years old. This survey result describes that group, not all Dachshunds or an individual dog’s prognosis.

Risk reduction cannot guarantee prevention, but sensible household management helps:

  1. Keep the Dachshund lean and ask a veterinarian about an appropriate diet and body condition.
  2. Provide regular, moderate exercise suited to the dog’s age and condition.
  3. Prevent repeated jumping on and off furniture and uncontrolled stair running.
  4. Consider a low, stable ramp as an optional way to access furniture without jumping; supervise its use.
  5. Use correct lifting technique: support both the chest and the hindquarters, keeping the back level.

Watch for severe pain, cautious movement or reluctance to move the head or neck, limb or paw incoordination, house-soiling accidents, or inability to move limbs. Contact a veterinarian promptly if these signs appear; sudden inability to move or suspected neurological symptoms need urgent veterinary assessment. Treatment varies: some cases may be managed with medication and rest, while others require surgery and long-term rehabilitation. Do not assume a change in movement is ordinary stubbornness or aging.

Feeding and weight control

Dachshunds can be enthusiastic eaters, and even a small amount of excess weight places additional strain on a long back and short legs. The Dachshund Club of America cautions against free feeding because the breed can overeat and become overweight; scheduled meals are a sensible alternative.

Measure portions according to the food’s calorie density, the dog’s life stage, activity, and body condition. The feeding guide on a bag is a starting point, not a personalized prescription. Treats, scraps, dental chews, and food used in training all count toward the daily calorie intake. Ask your veterinarian about an appropriate diet.

In a healthy body condition, the ribs should be easy to feel beneath a light covering of tissue without being prominently visible. Ask your veterinarian to assess body condition and set a target weight, particularly if your Dachshund is gaining weight, has reduced activity, or has a history of spinal disease.

Grooming

Grooming demands depend largely on coat type. Smooth Dachshunds usually need occasional wiping or grooming-glove care to remove loose hair. Longhaired dogs should be brushed as needed, more often if their coat is thick, with attention to feathering behind the ears, on the chest, legs, and tail. Wirehaired dogs need regular brushing or combing and may require hand-stripping or plucking several times a year.

Routine care should also include:

  • Teeth brushing with dog-safe toothpaste
  • Monthly nail trimming, as recommended by the AKC
  • Ear checks and cleaning only as directed by a veterinarian
  • Regular handling of the feet, mouth, and ears from puppyhood

Teaching handling gradually with treats makes nail trims, veterinary examinations, and grooming appointments less stressful.

Training a Dachshund

Dachshunds are intelligent, but intelligence does not guarantee cooperation. Their scenting instincts and independent working style can make them selective about where they put their attention. Short, frequent sessions usually work better than long drills.

Use food rewards, play, praise, and clear repetition. Harsh corrections are unnecessary and can make a sensitive or defensive dog less willing to engage. Keep household rules consistent: if barking at the window, jumping on people, or sleeping on the sofa is sometimes allowed and sometimes punished, the dog receives confusing information.

House-training may take patience. Take a puppy outdoors frequently, especially after sleeping, eating, drinking, and playing. Supervise closely indoors, reward elimination immediately outside, and clean accidents with an enzymatic cleaner. Punishing a dog after an accident does not teach the correct behavior and can make the dog hide future accidents.

Socialization should be gradual and positive. Expose a puppy to different people, sounds, surfaces, calm dogs, handling, car rides, and grooming without overwhelming it. A well-run puppy class can help, provided the veterinarian confirms that the puppy’s vaccination plan allows group participation.

Choosing a healthy Dachshund puppy

Look for a breeder who discusses health risks openly, raises puppies with appropriate socialization, and provides verifiable records for both parents. For Dachshund breeding stock, the AKC’s parent-club recommendations include:

  • Patella evaluation
  • Cardiac examination
  • Ophthalmologist evaluation

Searchable results may be available through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals database. A CHIC number means that the required breed-specific screenings were completed and made public; it does not mean every result was normal or that a puppy is guaranteed disease-free. “Vet checked” alone is not equivalent to documented parent health testing.

If considering a dapple Dachshund, ask specifically about the parents’ patterns and whether two dapple or merle dogs were bred together. Double-dapple offspring have increased risks of deafness, reduced eye size, missing eyes, and other abnormalities. Be cautious of sellers promoting “teacup” or “micro” Dachshunds as if extreme smallness were a health feature.

Veterinary care and lifespan

The AKC breed profile lists a typical Dachshund lifespan of 12–16 years. Longevity is supported by keeping the dog lean, providing suitable exercise, maintaining dental health, and attending regular veterinary appointments.

Routine visits should cover vaccinations, parasite prevention, teeth, body condition, mobility, eyes, ears, heart, and any changes in behavior or gait. Annual wellness examinations are a reasonable general minimum; puppies, seniors, and dogs with chronic conditions may need more frequent care.

Is the Dachshund right for your lifestyle?

A Dachshund may suit you if you want a close companion with a lively character and can commit to daily walks, training, weight management, and careful back-safe handling. It may be a poor fit if you need a quiet dog, leave home for long stretches every day, have many unsecured small pets, or expect a dog that will obey automatically without consistent reinforcement.

The breed’s size makes it practical for many homes, but its needs are not miniature. A Doxie still needs exercise, company, mental work, veterinary care, and boundaries—and its long back requires thoughtful management throughout its life.

FAQ

Are Miniature Dachshunds a separate breed?

No. In AKC terminology, Miniature Dachshunds are the miniature size category of the Dachshund breed. The AKC breed profile describes miniatures as 11 pounds or under and 5–6 inches tall.

How much exercise does a Dachshund need?

The AKC says two moderate-length walks each day are generally sufficient for many adults. Puppies need gradual increases in activity, while older or medically affected dogs need an individualized plan from a veterinarian.

Can Dachshunds jump on furniture?

The AKC advises preventing Dachshunds from jumping on and off furniture to avoid injury. A low, stable ramp is an optional access aid, but it is not proven to prevent IVDD.

What are signs of a Dachshund back problem?

Watch for severe pain, cautious movement or reluctance to move the head or neck, limb or paw incoordination, house-soiling accidents, or inability to move limbs. Contact a veterinarian promptly; inability to move or suspected neurological signs need urgent assessment.

The Bottom Line

Dachshunds are affectionate, courageous, intelligent dogs with more working-dog determination than their small size suggests. They thrive when given daily controlled exercise, reward-based training, companionship, and careful weight and back management. Choose health-tested parents, avoid extreme-size marketing claims, and treat sudden pain or changes in movement as veterinary concerns rather than normal Dachshund behavior.
