To help your pet stay calmer during blood tests or X-rays, prepare at home, reduce stress during travel and arrival, and tell the veterinary team about fear or handling difficulties before the appointment. Follow the clinic’s instructions about food, water and medication: preparation depends on the test and your pet’s health.
Before the appointment, practise in small steps
Make the carrier familiar for cats
Leave your cat’s carrier out between visits so it can become a place to rest or eat. Add familiar bedding or a cloth with a familiar home scent. Practise brief, gentle handling of your cat’s paws and body, rewarding calm participation when food is permitted. Stop before your cat becomes overwhelmed; the aim is gradual familiarity, not forcing the cat to tolerate more.
Practise calm handling with dogs
Keep handling practice short and pleasant, and reward calm participation if treats are appropriate. If car rides make your dog uneasy, try brief, positive trips that do not always end at the clinic. Gradual practice is more useful than trying to make a frightened pet relax for the first time on appointment day.
Call ahead about fear and instructions
Contact the clinic before the visit if your pet has panicked, tried to escape, growled, bitten or been difficult to handle. Tell staff what happened and ask whether a quieter appointment or arrival plan is possible, whether food is allowed, and whether to give any prescribed medication. The veterinarian can discuss low-stress handling or whether calming medication, sedation or rescheduling is appropriate. Do not give, withhold or change medication on your own.

Make travel and arrival less stressful
- Cats: Keep your cat secured in a carrier throughout travel. Familiar bedding or another familiar scent may help make the carrier feel less unfamiliar.
- Dogs: Keep your dog on a leash at the clinic and follow staff instructions about where to wait.
- Either species: If the waiting room is crowded or upsetting, ask whether you can wait in the car or go directly to an exam room. Use calm handling and let clinic staff guide the next steps.
These steps can reduce avoidable stress, but they cannot guarantee that a pet will be calm. Tell the team if your pet’s fear escalates after arrival so staff can adapt the plan.
Ask what preparation the blood test needs
Do not assume every blood test requires the same fast. VCA’s guidance for routine blood collection says a gentle fast of about six hours may be appropriate if possible, with water available; it also advises avoiding exercise or active play just before the visit. This is general guidance, not a universal instruction. VCA notes that “The preparation required for a special blood test depends on the test.” Follow your clinic’s directions, especially if your pet is young, has diabetes or takes medication. Ask before offering treats, since food may conflict with fasting instructions, allergies or medical needs.

A special test may call for a stricter fast or a change in medication timing. Confirm the exact plan with the veterinary team rather than extending a fast or changing medication yourself. VCA’s blood-test guidance was last updated December 4, 2024, and says it does not replace advice from your veterinarian.
Know what to expect during X-rays
The veterinary team positions your pet so the images are useful and the procedure is safe. Owners may be asked to leave the radiography area because of radiation exposure. VCA says owners cannot be present with a dog during radiography because X-rays may be harmful; ask your clinic what its procedure is for your pet.

Whether sedation is needed depends on the imaging procedure, your pet’s temperament and clinical circumstances. Discuss this with the veterinarian rather than assuming an awake X-ray or sedation will be right for every animal. Dental radiographs and imaging performed as part of an anesthetized procedure have different preparation and monitoring needs from a routine awake X-ray.

Freezing, vocalizing, repeated escape attempts or aggression are useful information for the veterinary team, not a reason to force your pet through handling. Contact the clinic ahead of time and describe what your pet does and what has helped or made things worse. Staff can plan a slower or lower-stress approach and discuss whether medication, sedation or rescheduling is appropriate. As AAHA’s behavior-management guidance puts it, “Move at the animal’s pace.” Medication choice and timing must be individualized by the veterinarian; never give a human medicine or change a prescribed dose without veterinary direction.
