The Chinese Shar-Pei is a calm, loyal dog with a famously wrinkled coat, small ears, a broad “hippopotamus” muzzle, and a blue-black tongue. Beneath the unusual appearance is an independent, guardian-type breed that often bonds closely with its family but may be reserved with strangers and assertive with unfamiliar dogs.

Shar-Pei can live successfully in apartments or houses, but they are not a low-responsibility breed. Good ownership means early socialization, consistent training, careful eye and ear monitoring, sensible wrinkle care, and a plan for breed-associated inflammatory and skin problems.

Shar-Pei at a glance

Characteristic Typical information
Official name Chinese Shar-Pei

Weight 45–60 pounds
Life expectancy 8–12 years
Coat Short, harsh, and straight

These figures describe the breed generally, not a guarantee for an individual dog. Body condition, sex, breeding, diet, and health all affect a Shar-Pei’s eventual size and longevity.

Appearance and coat

Shar-Pei puppies can have heavy wrinkles over much of the body. As they mature, the loose skin usually becomes less pronounced, with the most noticeable wrinkles remaining around the head, neck, and shoulders. The breed’s other distinguishing features include small ears, a high-set tail, a short rough coat, and a blue-black tongue.

The tongue is characteristic, but it is not proof of pedigree: Chow Chows can also have blue-black tongues. A dog’s appearance alone cannot verify that it is purebred.

Shar-Pei temperament

A well-raised Shar-Pei is often devoted to its household and relatively quiet at home. The breed was developed with an independent streak, however, so it may not respond to training like a dog that constantly seeks direction from its handler. Some Shar-Pei are suspicious of unfamiliar people and can be assertive or selective around other dogs.

That reserve should not be confused with a lack of need for socialization. From puppyhood, introduce the dog gradually and positively to people, surfaces, sounds, handling, children, and stable dogs. The goal is not to make every Shar-Pei greet everyone. It is to teach the dog how to remain composed and responsive when something unfamiliar appears.

Because this is a strong, self-directed breed, it is a better fit for an owner prepared to manage boundaries and supervise interactions than for someone expecting an automatically sociable dog. Families with children should teach both the dog and children how to interact safely; young children should not be left unsupervised with any dog.

Training and exercise

Begin training early, using short sessions, clear rules, rewards, and consistent follow-through. Puppy classes can provide useful controlled exposure to people and dogs as well as basic skills. Forceful or coercive handling can increase resistance or fear and is not an appropriate shortcut.

A healthy adult usually needs daily activity, although the exact amount varies with age, health, and individual energy. Regular walks combined with sniffing, training, food puzzles, or other mental work are often more useful than trying to exhaust the dog with repetitive exercise. Shar-Pei can participate in activities such as obedience, rally, tracking, and agility when the individual dog is physically suited to them.

An apartment can work if the dog receives daily walks and engagement. A yard does not replace training or supervised exercise, and fencing is important for a dog that may be independent or wary of unfamiliar visitors.

Grooming a Shar-Pei

The coat itself is relatively easy to maintain. Brush about once a week and bathe approximately monthly or when the dog is dirty, using products appropriate for dogs. Frequent scrubbing is not automatically healthier. Repeated washing, harsh products, or excessive cleaning can irritate the skin.

During routine handling, check the folds, lips, paws, and ears. The practical target is healthy, dry skin—not spotless wrinkles at any cost.

  • Skin folds: Look for moisture, redness, odor, crusting, pustules, hair loss, or raw areas.
  • Ears: AKC recommends weekly cleaning, but use only a veterinary-recommended ear solution. Never push cotton swabs into the canal or use hydrogen peroxide.
  • Nails: Trim regularly; a weekly check and, when needed, weekly trimming is a useful target.
  • Mouth and lips: Inspect for trapped moisture, odor, inflammation, or discharge.

Do not repeatedly treat painful, inflamed, or smelly skin and ears at home without finding the cause. Shar-Pei have narrow ear canals, and recurrent yeast or bacterial infections may need an examination, cytology, prescription medication, or a longer treatment plan.

Shar-Pei health problems

Eyes are a priority

Eye disease deserves particular attention in this breed. Reported problems include entropion, glaucoma, retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, cataracts, and cherry eye.

Entropion occurs when an eyelid rolls inward and hairs rub against the cornea. In puppies, it may develop soon after the eyes open. Squinting, rubbing, persistent tearing, mucus or pus, cloudiness, or an eye held closed is not a cosmetic wrinkle issue. Arrange prompt veterinary care. A painful or closed eye can develop corneal ulcers, scarring, and vision loss if treatment is delayed. Severe puppy entropion may be an emergency.

Ears and skin

Very narrow ear canals can limit ventilation and make infection difficult to see. Head shaking, scratching, odor, redness, pain, or discharge should lead to a veterinary examination rather than repeated over-the-counter cleaning.

Skin-fold pyoderma, lip-fold pyoderma, allergies, generalized bacterial infection, demodectic mange, and cutaneous mucinosis have all been reported in the breed. Wrinkles alone do not mean a dog is ill, but persistent odor, wet folds, intense itching, pustules, crusts, or hair loss need evaluation.

Shar-Pei fever and SPAID

Shar-Pei autoinflammatory disease, commonly called SPAID, is a heritable inflammatory syndrome associated with recurrent fever, painful or swollen hocks, lameness during episodes, recurrent ear inflammation, vesicular hyaluronosis, and potentially amyloidosis. A fever in a Shar-Pei should not automatically be labeled “Shar-Pei fever”: it is a diagnosis of exclusion, so other causes must first be investigated.

Because inflammatory disease can be associated with kidney problems, ask your veterinarian about routine urine screening for protein loss. Seek veterinary advice for repeated high fevers, swollen hocks, unexplained lameness, marked lethargy, vomiting, increased thirst or urination, or abnormal laboratory results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A SPAID genetic test estimates risk for a particular tested allele. Cornell describes results as non-carrier, single carrier, or double carrier, with increased estimated risk for single and double carriers. The result does not guarantee that a dog will or will not become ill, and it cannot rule out other genetic or non-genetic causes of inflammation.

Other reported risks

Veterinary and breed-club references also report respiratory disease, bloat or gastric dilatation-volvulus, inflammatory bowel disease, hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, hypothyroidism, kidney disease, and some cancers. These are breed-associated risks, not a prediction that every Shar-Pei will develop them.

Choosing a healthy Shar-Pei puppy

When evaluating a breeder, ask to see verifiable records for both parents. The AKC lists these national breed-club-recommended evaluations:

  • Patella evaluation
  • Hip evaluation
  • Elbow evaluation
  • Ophthalmologist evaluation
  • Thyroid evaluation

“Vet checked” is not the same as completing the recommended screening tests. Health testing reduces risk but cannot guarantee a disease-free puppy, because some breed problems have no definitive screening test or can arise despite clear results.

Pay attention to how the breeder discusses health. A responsible breeder should be willing to explain eye history, recurrent fever, ear and skin disease, kidney problems, and the screening records—not simply promise that a line has “no problems.” A puppy with painful or closed eyes, heavy discharge, poor appetite, or poor weight gain should be assessed before purchase and should not be dismissed as normal puppy wrinkles.

Feeding and weight control

Feed a complete, nutritionally balanced food suited to the dog’s life stage: growth, adulthood, or senior years. Puppies need a diet appropriate for growth, while dogs with chronic gastrointestinal, kidney, or inflammatory disease may need a veterinarian-directed formula.

Start with the food label’s guidance, then adjust for body condition, growth, activity, and veterinary advice. Treats should be a small part of the daily calorie intake. Avoid fatty table scraps and cooked bones unless your veterinarian has specifically advised otherwise. Keeping a Shar-Pei lean reduces unnecessary strain on joints and makes changes in health easier to detect.

Common misconceptions

Claim What is more accurate
“Every wrinkle must be scrubbed daily.” Inspect folds and keep them healthy and dry, but excessive cleaning can irritate skin.
“The SPAID DNA test diagnoses SPAID.” It estimates risk for a tested genetic marker; it does not diagnose clinical disease.
“A blue-black tongue proves purebred status.” Chow Chows can also have blue-black tongues, and tongue color does not prove pedigree.
“A calm dog does not need socialization.” A reserved breed still needs controlled, positive exposure and reliable handling skills.
“Every Shar-Pei will have severe health problems.” The breed has important risks, but individual dogs do not all develop every listed condition.
“Small-looking eyes make eye discharge harmless.” Squinting, discharge, cloudiness, or a closed eye can signal painful disease.

FAQ

Are Shar-Pei good family dogs?

They can be loyal and calm family companions, but they need early socialization, consistent training, and supervision around children and unfamiliar dogs. Their reserved, independent nature is not ideal for every household.

Do Shar-Pei need their wrinkles cleaned every day?

No. Inspect the folds regularly and keep them clean and dry, but routine aggressive scrubbing or unnecessary products can irritate the skin. Odor, redness, moisture, discharge, or raw areas require veterinary advice.

How much exercise does a Shar-Pei need?

Most healthy adults benefit from daily walks plus mental activity such as training, sniffing, food puzzles, or suitable dog sports. Exercise needs vary with age, health, and temperament.

What are the most urgent Shar-Pei health signs?

A painful or closed eye, squinting, eye cloudiness, heavy discharge, recurrent high fever, swollen hocks, severe lethargy, breathing difficulty, or signs of bloat require prompt veterinary attention.

Does the SPAID test tell me whether my Shar-Pei will get sick?

No. It estimates increased risk associated with a tested genetic allele. It does not guarantee disease or health and cannot exclude other causes of inflammation.

What health tests should a Shar-Pei breeder provide?

Ask for verifiable parent records covering patella, hip, elbow, ophthalmologist, and thyroid evaluations. These screenings reduce risk but cannot guarantee a disease-free puppy.
