You can take part by sharing reliable information, joining a local activity, supporting an animal-welfare organisation, or planning an event. It is for people who care about all animals—not only pets—and no purchase or large gathering is required.
What is World Animal Day?
World Animal Day is a global observance intended to raise the status of animals and improve welfare standards. Its organisers describe awareness as a starting point for change: “The first step towards change is awareness.” The day includes companion, wild, marine, farmed, working, and other animals, and welcomes individuals, schools, businesses, community groups, and animal-welfare organisations. When is World Animal Day?
World Animal Day takes place every year on October 4. The date is associated with the feast day of St Francis of Assisi. The 2026 theme announced by the organisers is “See the World Through Their Eyes,” a prompt to consider animals’ perspectives when making decisions. World Animal Day’s news and announcements
How did World Animal Day begin?
The first celebration was not held on October 4. According to the organiser’s account, writer and publisher Heinrich Zimmermann organised it in Berlin on March 24, 1925, with more than 5,000 attendees. The date moved to October 4 in 1929, and a proposal to make that the universal date was accepted at a congress in Florence in May 1931. World Animal Day’s history World Animal Day 2025 toolkit

If you are taking part as an individual
- Share a reliable animal-welfare resource or materials from World Animal Day’s official social media toolkit.
- Look for an event in your area through the official event listings, or contact a local shelter, rescue group, or animal-welfare organisation to ask what support it needs.
- Attend an educational or community activity, volunteer, or make an optional donation to a relevant organisation.
Prefer activities that help animals or build understanding without using live animals as props. The 2025 toolkit says real animals should not be used unless the activity directly improves their welfare. World Animal Day participation resources World Animal Day events World Animal Day 2025 toolkit

The Ambassador role is voluntary. The official criteria say applicants must work, paid or unpaid, for a registered not-for-profit, non-governmental animal-welfare organisation and must have organised at least one successful World Animal Day event before applying. The page also lists enthusiasm and the ability to motivate others. Check the current application information and whether an Ambassador already represents your country before applying. World Animal Day’s 2025 toolkit says its online reach on October 4, 2025, was more than 50 million people; the toolkit does not give a measurement methodology, so this is an organiser-reported figure rather than an independently audited count. In August 2026, the organiser announced a £10,000 grant to be shared by three recipients: Blue Cross of India in Chennai, WagWag in Banja Luka, and People for Animals in Siliguri. That grant is connected with the Ambassador programme, not a participation fee or a general requirement.
