The Manx is a compact, rounded cat from the Isle of Man, best known for a naturally variable tail length: some have no visible tail, while others have a short or full-length tail. Manx cats are also known for powerful hindquarters and an affectionate, playful temperament, though individual cats vary.
The mutation associated with short tails can also affect the spine and, in some cats, movement or bladder and bowel function. If you are choosing or caring for a Manx, prioritize normal movement, gentle handling, informed breeder discussions, and veterinary advice over tail length.

| Origin | Isle of Man, in the Irish Sea |
| Build | Medium-sized, compact, rounded, and muscular, with powerful hind legs |
| Weight | VCA Animal Hospitals lists 8–12 pounds; TICA lists 10–12 pounds for males and 8–10 pounds for females. These are breed-profile ranges, not target weights. |
| Coat | Short-haired Manx have a dense double coat; the long-haired variety is called Cymric by some registries. |
| Temperament | Often affectionate, intelligent, playful, and people-oriented; individuals vary. |
| Lifespan estimates | VCA Animal Hospitals lists 15–18 years; GCCF lists 12–14 years. These are separate estimates, not guarantees. |
| Grooming | Depends on coat length; regular combing or brushing helps control shedding. |
The breed is sometimes confused with the Cymric. TICA treats the Cymric as the long-haired variety within the Manx breed group, while CFA describes short-haired and long-haired Manx varieties. Registry naming and show classifications differ.
History and origin
Manx cats originated on the Isle of Man, where the naturally variable tail trait became established. TICA recounts that cats may have arrived on the island by ship and that a mutation led to kittens without normal tail vertebrae. Stories that a Manx lost its tail in an accident or descended from a cat aboard Noah’s Ark are folklore, not established history.

Appearance and tail types
A Manx has a rounded outline, broad chest, short arched back, deep flanks, round head, and powerful hind legs that are longer than the front legs. This can give the cat a raised-rump posture and an energetic, sometimes hopping run. A healthy Manx should move confidently; an unusual or awkward gait deserves veterinary attention rather than being dismissed as a breed trait.
Manx cats may have no visible tail, a short tail, or a full tail. Informal descriptions include “rumpy” for no externally visible tail, “rumpy riser” for a small rise at the tail base, “stumpy” for a short tail, and “longy” for a longer tail. These describe appearance, not separate breeds. Tail length alone does not establish health.
The short-haired coat is dense and double; the long-haired counterpart may be called Cymric. Coats come in many colors and patterns, with accepted varieties depending on the registry.
Personality and behavior
Breed organizations describe Manx cats as affectionate, intelligent, playful, and people-oriented. Many form strong bonds with one or more people and enjoy interactive play, but a breed profile cannot predict an individual cat’s personality.

Grooming requirements
Grooming needs depend on coat length. CFA recommends combing a short-haired Manx two or three times per month. For a long-haired Manx, CFA recommends weekly combing with a wide-toothed comb; check areas where tangles may begin. Regular grooming can help control shedding, and extra attention may be useful during moulting or as a cat ages and grooms itself less effectively.
Handle the rump gently, especially if the cat has a sensitive tail area. TICA advises supporting a Manx’s hindquarters when carrying it to avoid additional pressure on the spine. Ask your veterinarian for guidance if handling causes pain or your cat has mobility concerns.
- Trim claws when needed and check ears periodically for debris, redness, or odor.
- Brush the teeth with cat toothpaste if your cat tolerates it; ask your veterinarian about alternatives if not.
- Bathe only when necessary or when advised for a medical reason.
Start with brief, gentle handling sessions and rewards rather than restraining a cat for a prolonged grooming session.
Exercise and home setup
Offer daily play and safe opportunities to climb, such as sturdy scratching posts and stable cat furniture. Several short play sessions, wand toys, food puzzles, or toy-retrieval games can engage body and mind. Put away string, ribbon, and small detachable toy parts when you cannot supervise.
Indoor living helps protect cats from traffic, fights, infectious disease, and theft. A secure catio or carefully managed harness training can provide outdoor stimulation without unrestricted roaming. A cat with mobility or spinal problems may need a low-sided litter box, ramps, and easy access to food, water, and resting places.

Feeding and weight control
Feed a complete and balanced cat food appropriate for the cat’s life stage. There is no special “Manx diet” established by the breed sources. Portion needs depend on age, body condition, activity, reproductive status, and veterinary advice.
Do not treat published breed weight ranges as targets. Ask your veterinarian to assess your individual cat’s body condition and recommend portions. Keep fresh water available.

Manx syndrome and spinal concerns
The mutation associated with reduced tail length can affect other parts of the spine and, in some cats, neurological function or movement. Problems may include urinary or faecal incontinence and locomotor abnormalities. This group of potential problems is commonly called Manx syndrome, but it is not a single predictable illness and not every Manx is affected.
Watch for difficulty walking, weakness, poor coordination, difficulty urinating, or loss of bowel or bladder control. Seek veterinary assessment for changes in movement or elimination; do not assume they are simply typical of the breed. The UK Government expert opinion on feline breeding practices discusses the mutation’s potential effects on the spine and welfare.
CFA advises prospective owners to ask breeders about Manx syndrome in their lines. Breeding programs that include tailed Manx have helped maintain a healthy, diverse gene pool, according to CFA. Prioritize health and normal function over extreme taillessness, and request veterinary records and clear return provisions.

- Immersive gameplay: The felt maze is designed to simulate the natural hunting scene, and with the interactive structure of the ball, the cat can complete the "hunting" by pulling and exploring, and fully stimulate the natural hunting instinct
- Self-play design: the cat can start the exploration mode independently, and trigger the "prey movement" effect by pushing the built-in ball to meet the needs of indoor cats to play alone, and keep the cat alive when busy
- Double stimulation: it not only provides physical exercises such as running and pulling, but also exercises the cat's concentration and reaction, effectively alleviating the boredom and anxiety of indoor cats
- Safe and durable: made of soft felt, no odor, no hair loss, smooth edge and no scratch on the cat paw pad; Resistant to scratching and biting, not easy to deform after long-term use
- Easy to clean: the overall weight is light, the material is easy to take care of, and it can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner or a wet rag after being contaminated with dust; Suitable for cats of all ages
Arthritis and mobility problems
Spinal or pelvic abnormalities may contribute to discomfort or mobility problems. Watch for reluctance to jump, reduced play, hiding, difficulty entering the litter box, changes in grooming, or sensitivity around the lower back. Discuss behavioral or mobility changes with a veterinarian.
Other routine feline health issues
Manx cats can also develop common feline health problems, including dental disease, obesity, parasites, kidney disease, and age-related arthritis. Tail length does not determine overall health. Arrange preventive veterinary care and prompt evaluation of changes in appetite, movement, or bathroom habits.
How to choose a Manx kitten
Do not choose a kitten solely for having the shortest tail. Ask to see the kitten move and ask the breeder about health and elimination. A shelter or rescue may also have Manx-type cats; an adult cat’s personality and mobility may be easier to assess than a very young kitten’s.
- Ask whether the kitten has had a veterinary examination and request vaccination, deworming, and identification records.
- Ask whether the kitten urinates and defecates normally.
- Observe its gait and coordination, and ask about any movement concerns.
- Ask about the parents’ health and any family history of spinal, urinary, or bowel problems.
- Review the contract’s health guarantee and return provisions.
- Choose a kitten raised in a clean setting with regular, gentle human handling.
Be cautious if a seller refuses to let you see the kitten move, dismisses continence problems, or will not discuss inherited risks. Ask your veterinarian about any individual health concerns before making a decision.

FAQ
Are Manx cats born without tails?
No. Manx cats can have no visible tail, a short tail, or a full tail. Tail length varies, including among cats in the breed group.
Do Manx cats have health problems?
Some can have spinal or neurological problems associated with the mutation linked to short tails, including movement or bladder and bowel concerns. Not every Manx is affected. Ask a veterinarian about abnormal movement or elimination.
Are Manx cats good pets?
They are often described as affectionate, intelligent, and playful, but individual cats vary. Consider the cat’s temperament and needs, and introduce it gradually to children or other pets.
How do you groom a Manx cat?
CFA recommends combing a short-haired Manx two or three times per month and combing a long-haired Manx weekly with a wide-toothed comb. Adjust care to your cat’s coat and consult a groomer or veterinarian if tangles are difficult to manage.
How long do Manx cats live?
Published estimates differ: VCA Animal Hospitals lists 15–18 years, while GCCF lists 12–14 years. These are separate breed-profile estimates, not guarantees for an individual cat.
The Bottom Line
The Manx is a compact, muscular, often playful cat with a naturally variable tail length. Grooming depends on coat length, and the mutation associated with taillessness can affect the spine or function in some cats. Choose and handle an individual Manx with its comfort and health in mind, and seek veterinary advice for changes in movement or elimination.
