Baby Seven, the premature foal followed by millions through Tennessee breeder Katie Van Slyke’s social-media updates, died on August 11, 2025, at 18 months old. He was humanely euthanized after complications worsened by colic and extreme summer heat; the available reporting does not establish a separate confirmed cause of death.
Who was Baby Seven?
Seven was a male foal owned by Katie Van Slyke, a Tennessee horse breeder and social-media creator. His birth and prolonged medical treatment were documented online, turning his case into an international story about neonatal equine care.
He was not a miniature horse. His unusually small size was associated with being born prematurely, and the University of Tennessee describes him as a foal rather than identifying him as a miniature-horse breed.
Why was Seven considered medically fragile?
Seven was born on February 15, 2024, after 286 days of gestation. That was approximately two months earlier than expected. At birth, the bones in his knees and hocks had not fully hardened, leaving him vulnerable to joint instability and problems with limb development.

His early care focused on supporting his legs while limiting the strain placed on immature bones and joints. He spent his first three months in casts and was encouraged to lie down. Veterinary teams monitored and treated issues associated with incomplete ossification, joint laxity, contractures and limb deformities.
These are serious challenges for a premature foal. A newborn horse normally needs to stand and move soon after birth, but excessive weight-bearing can worsen deformities when the skeleton is not ready to support it. Seven’s treatment therefore involved balancing movement and rehabilitation against the need to protect developing tissue.
Seven’s treatment at the University of Tennessee
At about four and a half months old, Seven was transferred to the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine’s Equine Performance and Rehabilitation Center. He stayed there for approximately nine months before returning to Van Slyke’s farm in March 2025.
The case also became a teaching opportunity. Veterinary students cared for Seven during two-week clinical rotations, while faculty used his treatment to demonstrate rehabilitation techniques and the management of skeletal and limb-development problems in young horses.

His recovery attracted attention because it showed how intensive neonatal and rehabilitation care can be combined over many months. That attention did not make his condition routine, however. Prematurity can affect multiple systems, and progress in one area does not eliminate the risks associated with an immature body.
How did Baby Seven die?
Seven began showing signs of colic during the week before his death. Colic is a general term for abdominal pain in horses, not a single disease. It can result from problems involving the intestines and digestive tract, and its seriousness can range from temporary discomfort to a life-threatening emergency.
The available accounts do not support the simplified claim that Seven “died from colic” as a confirmed standalone diagnosis. The University of Tennessee reported that complications in August were exacerbated by colic and extreme summer heat. Seven was then humanely euthanized on August 11, 2025, at 18 months old. Van Slyke announced his death publicly on August 12.
Public reporting does not establish a separate necropsy-confirmed cause of death. That distinction matters: the documented information describes a combination of complications, colic and heat-related worsening, followed by euthanasia, rather than providing a more specific final diagnosis.

What happens to Seven’s legacy?
After Seven’s treatment, Van Slyke created the Baby Seven Equine Medicine Scholarship. The fund supports seven third- and fourth-year equine veterinary students, with awards of $7,000 each, according to the University of Tennessee.
His case also remains part of the educational legacy of the university’s veterinary program. Students and clinicians were able to study the practical challenges of caring for a premature foal, including how to protect developing joints, address limb abnormalities and build a rehabilitation plan over time.
Seven’s story is ultimately both a survival story and a reminder of the limits of veterinary medicine. He lived far longer than his initial medical condition might have suggested and helped train future equine veterinarians, but successful early treatment could not guarantee a long-term outcome.
What horse owners should know about colic
Seven’s death should not be used to diagnose another horse from a social-media description. Colic signs can be subtle or severe, and owners should contact an equine veterinarian promptly when a horse shows abdominal pain, repeated rolling, pawing, unexplained sweating, reduced manure output, loss of appetite or unusual restlessness.

Heat can add stress to an already sick horse, but the underlying cause of colic varies. A veterinarian is the appropriate person to assess pain, hydration, gut sounds, manure production and other clinical signs. Owners should not wait for symptoms to become dramatic before seeking advice.
