The best choice depends on your dog’s muzzle shape, food, meal size, and ability to use the feeder comfortably. For most dogs that gulp kibble, the Outward Hound Fun Feeder Slo Bowl is a versatile pick; the Leash Boss is designed for short snouts, and the LickiMat Slomo XL suits wet or lick-based meals.

Listed capacities are approximately ¾ cup for small, 2 cups for medium, and 3–4 cups for large models. The bowl has a non-slip base, is top-rack dishwasher safe, and is marketed as BPA-, PVC-, lead-, and phthalate-free.

- Holds 4 cups of dry or wet dog food – this very deep dog bowl has our most challenging puzzle feeder maze design and can fit a full meal for large-sized dogs
- Mindful mealtime – encourages slower eating and longer engagement, helping pups enjoy every bite while making mealtime more fun and interactive
- Multiple sizes, maze patterns, and 3 SLOW levels to choose from – Slow, Slower, or Slowest – to slow your dog down as much as needed; pick the perfect size and design for your unique pet
- Non-slip, food-safe, and easy to clean – our puzzle feeders are top-rack dishwasher-safe and made without BPAs, PVCs, lead, or phthalates
Best for: Dogs that eat too quickly and need a choice of bowl size and challenge level.
Potential drawback: Intricate patterns can trap food and take longer to clean by hand. Dogs with very short muzzles may struggle with deep or narrow sections, so choose a shallow, manageable design.
2. Outward Hound Stainless Steel Fun Feeder: best stainless-steel maze bowl
This version combines a stainless-steel outer bowl with a removable slow-feeder maze insert. It holds 2 cups, has a non-slip base, and is top-rack dishwasher safe. The removable insert is useful for owners who prefer stainless steel in contact with food, but remove it regularly to clean around its edges.
The manufacturer describes this as its most challenging “Slowest” pattern. It may suit a very fast eater, but is not necessarily the right starting point for a dog that becomes frustrated by complicated feeders.

3. LickiMat Slomo XL: best for wet, raw, or lick-based meals
The LickiMat Slomo XL is a flat enrichment feeder rather than a conventional bowl. Its channels and compartments spread food across a broad surface, encouraging licking and searching rather than gulping from one pile.
It is designed for dry, wet, raw, and liquid food, as well as treats and ice cream, with a listed capacity of up to 3 cups. The polypropylene and TPR construction has a non-slip base, and the mat is listed as dishwasher-, freezer-, and microwave-safe. LickiMat says Slomo products can be washed in any dishwasher position; Classic mats generally should be hand-washed because heat can warp them (LickiMat FAQs).

Potential drawback: Its wide, flat shape may not fit a narrow raised-bowl opening. Wash it after use, particularly after sticky foods such as peanut butter.
4. Leash Boss Flat Slow Feed Bowl: best for flat-faced dogs
The Leash Boss Flat Slow Feed Bowl uses a shallow, tilted maze intended for short-snout breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs, and Boxers. The listing specifies dimensions of 8 by 8 inches by 0.5 inch and a capacity of up to 1.5 cups.
Its shallow profile can help dogs that struggle to reach into deep grooves. The bowl is listed for wet or dry food and is dishwasher safe.
Best for: Flat-faced dogs and other dogs that cannot comfortably reach into deep maze bowls.
Potential drawback: A 1.5-cup capacity may not hold a large dog’s full meal. Do not heap food over the maze to increase capacity.
5. Frisco Non-Skid Slow Feeder: best large-capacity value
The reviewed Frisco model is the 4-cup version. It uses angled, puzzle-like ridges, easy-grip sides, and a non-slip rubber base. Chewy lists it as BPA-free, made from food-safe plastic, and dishwasher safe.
The listing says it can be used for dry food, wet food, and water and is suitable for all life stages, including puppies. It also identifies the bowl as an option for flat-faced breeds, but a dog should be able to reach the grooves comfortably. Choose a shallower feeder if your dog repeatedly scrapes its nose or teeth.

6. Le Tauci Ceramic Slow Feeder: best ceramic option
The Le Tauci Ceramic Slow Feeder has a listed capacity of 2.6 cups. It is designed to fit feeder stands with openings between 5.75 and 6.25 inches, so measure an existing stand before ordering.
Ceramic is heavier than most plastic bowls and can be harder for a dog to push around, but it can crack or chip if dropped or knocked against a hard surface.

7. JW Pet Skid Stop Slow Feed Bowl: best small-dog budget pick
The JW Pet Skid Stop Slow Feed Bowl uses raised ridges to interrupt fast eating, while rubber skid-stop grips help keep it in place. Petmate lists it as dishwasher safe and made from heavy-duty plastic. The product page lists a 1-cup capacity.
That capacity makes it a better fit for toy breeds, small dogs, or divided meals than for a large dog. A dog that eats more than 1 cup per meal may need a larger feeder.

Its wide food pockets are marketed as gentle on teeth and gums and may be easier for flat-faced dogs to navigate than narrow channels. The bowl is top-rack dishwasher safe.
Best for: Dogs that need a more comfortable feeding height, including some senior dogs, and owners who want height adjustment.

Ask your veterinarian before choosing a raised configuration for a dog at elevated GDV risk.

Match capacity to the measured meal
Advertised capacity is maximum volume, not a recommended serving size. Choose a bowl that holds the measured meal without overflowing the ridges, but avoid piling food so deeply that your dog can gulp it from the top.
Start with an easier design
More difficult is not automatically better. Begin with wide channels or shallow obstacles. Increase difficulty only if your dog still finishes almost immediately and can retrieve every piece comfortably. Pawing, flipping the bowl, abandoning the meal, whining, or repeatedly failing to reach food can indicate the design is too difficult.

Choose the feeder around the food
- Dry kibble: Ridge and maze bowls generally work well.
- Wet or raw food: A broad lick-based feeder such as the LickiMat Slomo XL is easier to spread food across.
- Mixed meals or supplements: Mix the food in a separate container before transferring it; narrow channels can make thorough mixing difficult.
Prioritize cleaning and condition
Wash a feeder after every wet-food use, and clean sticky foods such as peanut butter promptly. Follow the specific product’s dishwasher instructions rather than assuming all slow feeders tolerate the same heat or dishwasher position.
Replace plastic bowls with deep scratches, ceramic bowls with chips or cracks, and any feeder with loose rubber, damaged inserts, sharp edges, or chewing damage. Do not leave a dog unattended with equipment it is actively destroying.
What slow feeders can—and cannot—do
A slow feeder can make a dog take longer to eat, but it cannot guarantee protection against choking, vomiting, aspiration, discomfort, or bloat. Rapid eating is one factor associated with GDV, a rapidly progressing, life-threatening emergency. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons describes GDV as an emergency; a slow feeder is not a substitute for veterinary advice.
Do not treat an elevated bowl as a universal bloat-prevention tool. Depending on the dog’s risk profile, a veterinarian may recommend avoiding elevated feeding. Other management measures can include dividing food into smaller meals and limiting vigorous exercise around meals.
Seek emergency veterinary care for a swollen or distended abdomen, repeated unproductive retching, restlessness, weakness, collapse, or other signs that could indicate bloat. A slow feeder should support safer mealtimes, not delay treatment.
FAQ
Do slow-feeder bowls really work for dogs that eat too fast?
They can make eating take longer by breaking food into smaller sections or spreading it over a licking surface. Results depend on the design and the dog. A feeder that is too easy may not slow the meal much, while one that is too difficult can cause frustration or prevent comfortable access to food.
What is the best slow feeder for a flat-faced dog?
A shallow, open, or tilted design is usually a better starting point than a deep maze. The Leash Boss Flat Slow Feed Bowl is designed for short snouts, while the Neater Slow Feeder uses wider food pockets. Check that your dog can reach every piece without scraping its nose or teeth.

Can I put wet food in a slow-feeder bowl?
Yes, but the design matters. Wet food can be difficult to retrieve from narrow maze channels and may be easier to spread on a broad feeder such as the LickiMat Slomo XL. Wash the feeder after wet-food use and follow its current dishwasher instructions.
Can a slow feeder prevent bloat?
No. Slowing a meal may address rapid eating, but a slow feeder cannot guarantee prevention of GDV. Discuss feeding arrangements with your veterinarian, especially if your dog is deep-chested or otherwise at elevated risk. Seek immediate veterinary care for abdominal distension or repeated unproductive retching.
The Bottom Line
For most dogs that gulp kibble, the Outward Hound Fun Feeder Slo Bowl offers a useful mix of size choices, difficulty levels, non-slip stability, and dishwasher convenience. Choose the LickiMat Slomo XL for wet or lick-based meals, the Leash Boss Flat Slow Feed Bowl for many short-nosed dogs, and the JW Pet Skid Stop when a small dog needs a basic one-cup option.
Whichever bowl you choose, start with a manageable pattern, measure the meal, supervise first uses, and replace any feeder that becomes cracked, chipped, scratched, or damaged.
