10 of the Cutest Pomeranian Haircuts to Show Your Groomer

Explore 10 Pomeranian haircut styles and what to ask your groomer for each. A light scissor trim that preserves the double coat is the safest cosmetic choice for most Poms.

For most Pomeranians, the safest haircut is a light scissor trim that preserves the full double coat. Haircut names such as “puppy cut” and “teddy bear” are not standardized, so show your groomer a photo and specify the finished length and how much coat may be removed.

These 10 looks range from conservative trims to short cosmetic styles. Before choosing one, remember that a close clip removes protective coat and may lead to slow, uneven, or incomplete regrowth.

Before choosing a Pomeranian haircut

Pomeranians have a soft, dense undercoat beneath longer protective guard hairs. The double coat helps insulate the dog and protects the skin. Shaving or closely clipping it can increase exposure to sun and irritants, and regrowth may be slow, uneven, or incomplete.

A close shave is not a reliable way to keep a Pomeranian cool, and a short haircut does not stop shedding. Loose undercoat can still shed beneath or through a shorter outer coat. Regular brushing and professional grooming are better tools for coat care.

That does not mean a Pomeranian can never be clipped. Severe matting, skin disease, or a veterinary procedure may make clipping necessary. Ask your veterinarian or an experienced groomer about the appropriate approach.

When you speak with your groomer, specify the finished length and technique. Say whether you want scissors or clippers, and show a reference photo.

1. Teddy bear cut

A teddy bear cut rounds the face and ears into a plush, soft-looking shape. On a Pomeranian, it can be gentle scissor shaping or a very short clipped style, so the name alone is not specific enough.

Ask for: “A rounded teddy-bear face, with the full double coat preserved. Please do not clip the body closely.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A longer, scissored teddy-bear look is the more coat-conscious interpretation. A short version may remove much of the protective coat and affect its texture and regrowth.

2. Lion cut

The lion cut leaves a mane around the head, neck, and chest, while the body is clipped short. Some versions also leave a tuft at the end of the tail.

It is striking, but it is one of the riskiest cosmetic styles for a Pomeranian. Removing the body coat can leave the skin vulnerable to sun and irritants, and the coat may not return to its former density or texture.

If you are considering this look, discuss the risks with an experienced groomer first. A lightly shaped “mane” that does not involve a close body clip may create a similar outline with less coat removal.

3. Puppy cut

A puppy cut generally means shortening the coat to a relatively even length for a neat, youthful appearance. Unlike the teddy bear cut, it usually does not emphasize a strongly rounded face.

CHI for Dogs Small Breed Detangling Kit, 3-Piece Set
  • 3-PIECE GROOMING KIT CONTENTS: Includes CHI for Dogs Detangling Spray, a fine-pin Slicker Brush, and a Double-Sided Pin-and-Bristle Brush, all engineered specifically for small dog coat types prone to matting, tangles, and static.
  • DETANGLING SPRAY FORMULA: The included leave-in spray penetrates the coat cuticle to loosen knots, reduce static buildup, and leave the coat smooth and manageable; formulated for small dogs with fine, long, wavy, or double-layer coats.
  • DOUBLE-SIDED BRUSH DESIGN: Features a pin side for detangling and a bristle side for finishing, providing two grooming functions from one compact tool; sized for small breeds including Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, Maltese, and Bichon Frises.
  • SLICKER BRUSH FOR SMALL BREEDS: Fine-wire bristle slicker brush removes loose hair, surface tangles, and debris from small dog coats; sized for small-to-medium dog bodies, including faces, legs, and tail areas, without causing discomfort.
  • COAT MOISTURE AND BALANCE: Grooming formula is designed to restore natural coat shine, minimize shedding, and strengthen fur follicles through moisturizing ingredients that penetrate the coat cuticle and work from the inside out.

The term has no universal finished length. On a Pomeranian, an even short cut may remove substantial parts of the double coat and is not the same as a natural tidy trim.

Ask for: The exact length that will remain, whether the body will be scissored or clipped, and whether the ruff and tail will stay full.

4. Fox cut

A fox cut emphasizes a more pointed face and triangular-looking ears, often with a shorter body and a fuller, natural-looking tail. It can make a Pom look alert and less round than a teddy bear style.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some groomers use “fox cut” only for facial shaping, while others shorten the body substantially. A coat-preserving version can keep the ruff, furnishings, and tail plume while lightly refining the outline.

Bring a photo and say: “Please keep the face pointed and natural-looking, but do not shorten the body coat more than necessary.”

5. Lamb cut

The lamb cut is usually described as a soft, simple style with a more defined muzzle and pointed-looking ears. It can give the coat a smooth, plush appearance without the strongly rounded face associated with a teddy bear cut.

Because the term has no universal length or shape, confirm the body length, ear shape, leg length, and whether scissors or clippers will be used. If the groomer plans to cut deeply into the undercoat, it is no longer a conservative tidy trim.

6. Kennel cut

A kennel cut is intended to be practical and easier to maintain, with the coat shortened to a chosen length and a simple finish.

There is no single kennel-cut length. Ask the salon which blade or attachment comb it plans to use and what the finished coat will look like on a Pomeranian.

  • SUPPORTS HEALTHY COATS: Helps distribute natural oils for a smooth and healthy-looking dog coat, promoting shine and improved coat appearance when used regularly as part of grooming routines.

A close kennel cut carries the same concerns as any other short clip: increased skin exposure and the possibility of delayed or uneven regrowth. If your goal is easier maintenance, a moderate scissor trim may be a better compromise.

7. Boo cut

The Boo cut takes its name from Boo, the internet-famous Pomeranian. The recognizable look combines a short, rounded, puffy body and face with a longer tail.

It is an appealing photograph to show your groomer, but the style should not be treated as proof that shaving is safe. A longer, scissor-shaped version can create a rounded silhouette while leaving the protective coat intact.

Be precise: Ask whether the reference photo requires a close clip, what length will remain, and whether the groomer can create a similar outline with scissors.

8. Show cut

A show cut enhances the Pomeranian’s natural outline rather than creating a dramatically artificial shape. The neck ruff, leg furnishings, and heavily plumed tail remain full, while stray hairs and selected areas are carefully neatened.

Ask for: “A natural show-style outline trim. Please preserve the full double coat, ruff, furnishings, and tail plume.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This style depends on regular brushing and an experienced groomer. It is not a wash-and-go haircut, but it can make a well-maintained Pom look polished without sacrificing its characteristic silhouette.

9. Traditional cut

The traditional cut is a conservative all-over tidy. It keeps the Pomeranian fluffy while lightly refining uneven outer hairs, feet, ear tips, sanitary areas, and untidy sections of the legs or tail.

It is closer to a natural pet trim than to a shaved or heavily sculpted style. The body coat, ruff, furnishings, and tail plume should remain substantially full.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Long-tail cut

The long-tail cut keeps the tail plume long and full while tidying or shortening the rest of the coat somewhat more than a traditional trim.

Because the body length is not standardized, the reference photo matters. The groomer should know whether you want a rounded body, a natural outline, or simply less length through the legs and sides.

Ask for: “Keep the tail plume full and long. Lightly neaten the body, but do not shave or closely clip the double coat.”

The safest choice for most Pomeranians: a natural tidy trim

A natural tidy trim is usually the most coat-preserving option. It can include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Light scissoring of uneven outer hairs
  • Neatening the feet and paw-pad hair
  • A small sanitary trim
  • Careful shaping around the ear tips
  • Tidying stray leg and tail hairs
  • A bath, blow-dry, thorough brush-out, nail care, and coat inspection

The aim is to improve the outline and hygiene while retaining the body coat, neck ruff, leg furnishings, and tail plume.

What to tell your groomer

Do not rely on “short,” “summer cut,” or a style name by itself. A clear request could be:

“Please preserve my Pomeranian’s full double coat. Do not shave or closely clip the body. Keep the neck ruff, leg furnishings, and tail plume. Use scissors for a light outline trim, and tidy the feet, paw pads, ear tips, and sanitary area. Please contact me before removing additional coat.”

Before the appointment starts, ask:

  1. Will clippers be used on the body?
  2. What finished length will remain?
  3. Will the ruff and tail plume stay full?
  4. Does the groomer regularly work with Pomeranians or other double-coated breeds?
  5. Can the planned length be shown or demonstrated before grooming begins?

Use a photograph alongside these instructions. Two salons may interpret “teddy bear cut” or “puppy cut” very differently.

How often should a Pomeranian be groomed?

Frequent brushing at home is important for the breed. Professional grooming every four to six weeks is commonly recommended for hygiene and coat maintenance, but the right interval depends on coat density, shedding, matting, climate, activity, and how consistently the coat is brushed between appointments.

Shortening the coat does not remove the need for brushing. Loose undercoat can still shed and mat. If your Pom has sudden hair loss, bald patches, persistent itching, or a coat that is not regrowing after a clip, contact your veterinarian rather than assuming it is a normal haircut problem.

FAQ

What is the safest haircut for a Pomeranian?

For most Pomeranians, a natural tidy trim is the safest cosmetic option. It lightly shapes the outer hairs and tidies the feet, ears, sanitary area, and stray hairs while preserving the double coat, ruff, furnishings, and tail plume.

Can you shave a Pomeranian for summer?

A close shave is generally not recommended as a summer treatment. The double coat helps insulate and protect the skin; shaving removes that protection and can increase exposure to sun and irritants. Veterinary treatment or severe matting can be exceptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does shaving stop a Pomeranian from shedding?

No. Shaving does not eliminate shedding; loose undercoat can still shed beneath or through a shorter outer coat.

Will a Pomeranian’s coat grow back normally after shaving?

Not always. Regrowth after a close clip may be slow, uneven, have altered texture, or be incomplete. Ask a veterinarian about persistent hair loss or bald patches.

How do I ask for a teddy bear cut on a Pomeranian?

Show a photograph and specify the finished length. Ask for a rounded face created with light scissoring while preserving the full body coat and avoiding a close clip.

How often should a Pomeranian visit a professional groomer?

A four-to-six-week schedule is commonly recommended, but the best interval depends on the individual coat and home brushing routine. Frequent brushing between appointments is still necessary, especially around the ruff, behind the ears, legs, and tail.

The Bottom Line

The cutest Pomeranian haircut is the one that suits your dog without unnecessarily sacrificing the coat. For a low-risk result, choose a natural tidy, traditional trim, or longer scissored version of a teddy bear, fox, or rounded style. Bring a photo, state the finished length, and make it clear that you want the double coat preserved.
