American green tree frogs are climbers native to much of the southeastern United States, and they are closely associated with freshwater wetlands. Their changing colors, sticky toe pads, repeated calls, and brief tadpole stage make them especially interesting amphibians.

1. Their current scientific name is Dryophytes cinereus

Older books and websites often call the American green tree frog Hyla cinerea, but current North American taxonomic references place it in the genus Dryophytes. The common name helps distinguish it from unrelated green tree frogs found elsewhere in the world.

2. They are native to the southeastern United States

Their range extends from Delaware and Maryland south through Florida and west to Texas, with populations reaching parts of Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. They are commonly associated with wetlands and other freshwater habitats.

3. “Green” is only part of their color story

Adults may be bright green, yellowish green, dull green, or slate-gray. Many have a white or yellow stripe along the side of the body, though the stripe can be reduced or absent.

4. They can change color relatively quickly

American green tree frogs may become darker or grayer when cold or stressed. Because body color varies, the pale side stripe can be a more reliable field mark than color alone.

Enlarged toe pads help these frogs cling to surfaces such as tree trunks, windows, and sliding-glass doors. Sticky mucus secreted by the skin covers the pads and helps them grip.

6. They are closely associated with freshwater wetlands

Typical habitats include swamps, marshes, ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams. Floating or emergent vegetation provides cover and calling perches.

7. Only males make the familiar repeated call

Males call from plants beside the water or from floating vegetation. Their call is often described as a nasal, repeated “queenk” or a loud quacking sound. They may call even when it has not recently rained.
