The Coton de Tulear is a small Malagasy companion dog known for its soft, cotton-like coat, playful personality, and strong attachment to people. It can suit apartment living and many family homes, but it is not a low-maintenance dog: the coat needs frequent grooming, and the breed generally does best with regular company and interaction.
Before choosing one, consider two practical questions: can you provide daily attention and moderate activity, and are you prepared to brush a long coat several times a week—or nearly every day if it is kept full?

History and breed identity
The Coton de Tulear originated in Madagascar and takes its name from Tulear, a port city on the island’s southwestern coast. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale lists Madagascar as the breed’s country of origin and France as its country of patronage.
The breed is sometimes called the “Royal Dog of Madagascar,” reflecting its historical association with Malagasy royalty. That nickname should not be treated as proof that ownership was legally restricted in every period of the breed’s history. The American Kennel Club recognized the Coton in 2014 as its 179th recognized breed and places it in the Non-Sporting Group. A common pronunciation is “cotawn day two-lee-are.”

Appearance and size
A Coton is small but sturdy rather than extremely fine-boned. The AKC standard describes a somewhat rectangular dog: the body is approximately two-thirds as tall as it is long when measured from the withers to the ground and from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttocks.
The defining feature is the coat. It is long, dense, profuse, soft, supple, and cotton-like, with a slight wave permitted. It should not feel hard or rough, and it should not be tightly curled, woolly, or silky.
Coat color
Under the AKC breed standard, adults are predominantly white. Limited light tan shading is allowed on up to 5% of the body in dogs over 12 months old, while limited light gray or light tan shading may appear on the ears. Puppies can show more extensive tan, brown, chestnut, or gray markings that may fade as the dog matures. Applying adult color expectations rigidly to a young puppy can therefore be misleading.
Under the AKC standard, the eyes are brown or black with black eye rims, and the nose and lips are fully black. The tail curves over the back when the dog is moving; at rest, it hangs down with an upward hook at the tip.
Temperament and everyday behavior
Cotons are typically affectionate, sociable, intelligent, energetic, and playful. The breed standard also describes them as lighthearted, clownish, calm, easygoing, and gentle. Many develop a particularly close bond with their household and enjoy being included in ordinary activities.
That sociability has a downside: a Coton may struggle in a home where it is routinely left alone for long periods. “Adaptable” does not mean comfortable with an entire workday of isolation. Boredom or frustration can contribute to barking, destructive behavior, or difficulty settling.
Some Cotons use distinctive vocalizations, and many will alert-bark at unfamiliar sounds or movement outside. Early socialization and reward-based training can help prevent normal alertness from becoming excessive barking or territorial behavior.

Children and other pets
Many Cotons do well with children and other dogs, but individual temperament and handling matter more than breed labels. Supervise interactions, especially with toddlers, and teach children not to carry, corner, chase, or disturb a small dog while it is eating or resting. Introductions to other pets should be gradual and controlled.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Exercise and enrichment
This is a fairly active small breed. Most adult Cotons need moderate daily exercise rather than strenuous endurance work. A practical routine might include a walk, indoor or outdoor play, and a few short training sessions spread through the day.
Good activities include:
- Walks that allow safe sniffing and exploration
- Fetch and interactive games
- Trick training and basic obedience
- Agility or other suitable dog sports
- Food puzzles and problem-solving toys
- Supervised swimming for dogs that enjoy and can safely manage it
A yard is not essential. Cotons can adapt to apartments if they receive daily activity, attention, training, and mental stimulation. Exercise alone is not enough for a companion breed that also wants social contact.
Training and socialization
Cotons generally learn well with short, varied, reward-based sessions. Their intelligence and playfulness can make them entertaining students, but repetitive drills may lead to distraction or apparent stubbornness. Keep sessions brief, change the task before the dog loses interest, and reward the behavior you want to see.
Harsh or punitive methods are a poor match for this sensitive, people-oriented breed and can damage trust or increase anxiety. Use food, toys, praise, and access to enjoyable activities as rewards.
What to socialize
Begin puppy socialization with controlled, positive exposure to:
- People of different ages and appearances
- Calm, healthy dogs and appropriate animals
- Car travel and different floor surfaces
- Household sounds such as vacuums, doorbells, and appliances
- Collar or harness handling
- Brushing, combing, nail trims, bathing, ear checks, and face cleaning
- Being briefly separated and then reunited calmly
The goal is confident, appropriate behavior—not forcing a puppy into an overwhelming situation. Give the dog distance, breaks, and rewards when new experiences are handled calmly.

Grooming the cotton-like coat
The Coton’s coat sheds relatively little, but it is not maintenance-free. Brush or comb at least three or four times weekly; a dog kept in a full coat may need near-daily grooming. Mats commonly form behind the ears, around the elbows, and on the legs.
- Work in small sections rather than brushing only the visible surface.
- Use a suitable brush and comb all the way to the skin.
- Apply a dog-safe conditioning or detangling spray when appropriate.
- Ease apart small knots gently instead of pulling through them.
- Check behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, and near the tail.
- Ask a professional groomer for help with severe matting; extensive mats may need to be clipped.
Introduce grooming gradually while the dog is young. A puppy that learns to stand calmly for brushing, nail care, bathing, and face cleaning will be much easier to maintain as an adult.

Eyes, ears, and tear staining
Check the ears at least weekly for wax, debris, odor, redness, pain, or discharge. Do not aggressively pluck hair from inside the ear without advice from a veterinarian or experienced professional groomer.
White facial hair can show tear staining. Gently wiping the area with lukewarm water or a dog-safe product may improve its appearance, but persistent tearing, redness, squinting, or discharge needs veterinary attention. Cosmetic cleaning should not replace investigation of an eye or eyelid problem.
Is the Coton hypoallergenic?
No dog is completely hypoallergenic. Allergens can come from dander, saliva, and skin proteins, not only from loose hair. Because Cotons generally shed less than many breeds, some allergy sufferers may tolerate an individual Coton better—but reactions vary. Spend time with the specific dog before committing, and do not rely on a “hypoallergenic” guarantee.
Health and veterinary care
Cotons are generally considered a healthy breed, and their expected lifespan is long, but they can still develop inherited or common canine health problems. Conditions reported in the breed include eye disease, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, spinal disc disease, progressive retinal atrophy, and degenerative myelopathy. These are possible concerns, not conditions every Coton will develop.

The Coton de Tulear parent club’s health-testing recommendations include:
- An eye examination by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist
- An OFA patellar-luxation evaluation
- A cardiac examination
- A health elective made up of additional evaluations or DNA tests, with options that may include hip, thyroid, von Willebrand disease, degenerative myelopathy, canine multifocal retinopathy, and Legg-Calvé-Perthes testing
When assessing a breeder, look up the sire’s and dam’s registered names or identification numbers in the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) database. “Vet checked” is not the same as documented breed-relevant screening.
A CHIC number means the required tests were performed and their results were made public. It does not mean every result was normal or that the dog is free of all disease. CHIC requirements are breed-specific and can change over time.

Weight and feeding
Some Cotons gain excess weight, particularly when treats and portions are not adjusted for their small size. Feed a complete and balanced food appropriate for the dog’s life stage; a product with an AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement is a useful starting point. Follow the food label initially, then adjust with your veterinarian based on body condition, activity, growth, and calorie density.
Measure meals rather than estimating, count training treats as part of the daily intake, and ask your veterinary team about meal frequency for a puppy. Breed-average feeding charts cannot account for every individual dog.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a Coton de Tulear puppy
A responsible breeder should be willing to discuss the parents’ health, temperament, veterinary care, socialization, sales contract, and return policy. Ask for actual documentation rather than accepting a general claim that the litter is “health tested.” Verify the parents’ records in OFA and check that the names or identification numbers match.
Also ask:
- How are puppies introduced to grooming and handling?
- What household sounds, surfaces, people, and dogs have they experienced?
- How does the breeder match puppies with homes?
- What happens if the owner can no longer keep the dog?
- What screening or support is provided after the puppy goes home?
A club membership, a veterinary check, or a CHIC number is not a guarantee that a puppy will never become ill. It is one part of evaluating breeding practices and available health information.

Who should—and should not—get a Coton?
A Coton may be a strong match if you want a small, trainable companion, enjoy interactive play, can provide regular human contact, and are comfortable with frequent coat care. It can live successfully in a flat or a house and does not require a large garden.
Think twice if the dog would be alone most of the day, if you want a genuinely wash-and-wear coat, or if you are unwilling to budget for professional grooming when mats or coat-management problems arise. Small size makes some tasks easier; it does not remove the breed’s social and grooming needs.
FAQ
How often should a Coton de Tulear be brushed?
Brush or comb a Coton at least three or four times a week. A full, long coat may require grooming almost daily, especially behind the ears, around the elbows, on the legs, and near the collar.
Are Coton de Tulears good apartment dogs?
They can be. A Coton does not need a large yard, but it does need daily walks or play, mental stimulation, training, and substantial human interaction. Apartment living is not a substitute for companionship.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do Coton de Tulears shed?
They are generally low-shedding, but they do not shed zero hair and are not completely hypoallergenic. Their loose hair can remain trapped in the coat, which is one reason regular brushing is important.
What health tests should a Coton de Tulear breeder provide?
The parent club recommends an ACVO eye examination, an OFA patellar-luxation evaluation, a cardiac examination, and additional health evaluations or DNA tests. Confirm the parents’ results in the OFA database; a CHIC number confirms public completion of required tests, not that every result was normal.
The Bottom Line
The Coton de Tulear is a cheerful, affectionate small dog with a long potential lifespan and the flexibility to live in many types of homes. Its trade-offs are clear: it needs regular company, moderate daily activity, reward-based training, and consistent coat care. Choose one for its temperament and your ability to meet those needs—not simply because it is small or low-shedding.
