Tapeworms in cats are usually noticed when rice-like segments appear on stool, near the anus, or on bedding; many infected cats otherwise seem well. The common feline tapeworms are spread by swallowing an infected flea or eating infected prey, so treatment should be paired with control of the exposure source.

A veterinarian can identify the parasite and choose a cat-safe treatment, commonly praziquantel. A routine fecal test can miss tapeworms, and preventing reinfection means controlling fleas or limiting access to prey.

What tapeworms look like in cats

Tapeworms are flat, ribbon-like parasites that live mainly in the small intestine. Their bodies are made of segments called proglottids. Mature segments break away and pass in feces or crawl out through the anus.

Fresh segments can move and look like grains of white rice or cucumber seeds. Once they dry, they may become smaller, yellowish, and more like sesame seeds. You may find them:

How cats get tapeworms

Swallowing an infected flea

Dipylidium caninum is commonly called the flea tapeworm. A cat becomes infected by swallowing an adult flea carrying the tapeworm’s larval stage, usually while grooming. Simply swallowing tapeworm eggs does not cause this infection.

A cat does not need to have an obvious flea infestation. Cats are efficient groomers, and one infected flea may be enough. Fleas can survive year-round inside warm homes, so living indoors reduces some risks but does not eliminate them.

Eating infected prey

Cats can acquire Taenia species by eating infected rodents or other intermediate hosts. Outdoor cats, farm cats, and indoor-outdoor hunters are therefore at greater risk. Hunting, scavenging, and eating raw prey can all increase exposure.

Tapeworm symptoms in cats

Many cats with tapeworms appear completely well. Infection is often discovered because an owner spots segments rather than because the cat becomes sick.

Possible signs include:

  • Rice-like segments around the anus or in stool
  • Anal irritation or increased licking beneath the tail
  • Scooting
  • Occasional vomiting
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Weight loss, particularly with a heavy infection or another illness

Tapeworms are not the only cause of scooting. Fleas, allergies, anal-sac problems, skin irritation, and other parasites can cause similar behavior. Persistent scooting deserves a veterinary examination rather than automatic deworming.

Severe debilitation is unusual from tapeworms alone. Repeated vomiting, marked lethargy, bloody diarrhea, substantial weight loss, or a failure to thrive suggests that something more than a routine tapeworm infection may be involved.

How veterinarians diagnose tapeworms

A veterinarian may identify tapeworms by examining segments found in the stool, around the anus, or in vomit. A routine fecal flotation test can be useful for detecting other intestinal parasites, but a negative result does not reliably rule out tapeworms.

That is because Dipylidium eggs are packaged inside segments. A submitted stool sample may not contain a segment, and the eggs may not float well during standard testing. If you have seen rice-like segments, tell the veterinarian even if the fecal test is negative.

Bring a clear photograph or a fresh sample when possible. Identifying the likely parasite helps the veterinarian choose an appropriate treatment.

Treatment for tapeworms in cats

Praziquantel is a commonly used treatment for feline tapeworms. Depending on the product and local availability, it may be given as a tablet, injection, or topical medication. Epsiprantel is another effective veterinary option in some regions.

The correct treatment depends on the cat’s weight, age, health, the suspected tapeworm species, and the product’s formulation. Use only a product labeled for cats and follow its instructions or your veterinarian’s directions exactly. Do not calculate a cat’s dose from a dog product or use a human dewormer without veterinary guidance.

Some combination products treat tapeworms along with roundworms or hookworms. A flea, heartworm, roundworm, or hookworm product does not automatically treat tapeworms. Check the label for a specific tapeworm indication or an appropriate cestocide such as praziquantel.

You may not see dead worms after treatment. An effective medication can cause the parasite to be digested inside the intestine, so the absence of visible worms does not mean treatment failed.

What if tapeworm segments continue after treatment?

Contact your veterinarian if segments continue to appear after the treatment period or return later. The cat may have been reinfected, the product may not have covered the parasite involved, the dose or administration may have been incorrect, or fleas and hunting may still be providing exposure.

Do not repeatedly give dewormers without checking the diagnosis and product instructions. A veterinarian may recommend another treatment and investigate flea control, prey access, or a different cause of the material you are seeing.

Preventing tapeworms and reinfection

1. Control fleas on every pet

Flea control is essential when Dipylidium is involved. Treat every cat and dog in the household with a product appropriate for that animal’s species, age, and weight, selected with veterinary advice when needed. Treating only the cat that passed segments may leave the infection cycle intact.

Flea control includes treating pets, cleaning the home, and following up as directed:

  • Broad-Spectrum Dewormer for Dogs - (pyrantel pamoate/praziquantel) Tablets for Dogs (2 to 20 lbs)
  1. Treat every cat and dog in the household with a product suitable for that animal.
  2. Wash pet bedding, vacuum carpets and upholstered areas, and clean the places where pets rest.
  3. Ask a veterinarian whether an environmental flea treatment is appropriate.
  4. Continue follow-up control as directed.

Flea pupae can remain protected in the environment. Seeing occasional fleas after the first treatment does not necessarily mean the product failed; moderate or severe infestations may take months to control.

Never apply a dog-labeled flea or tick product to a cat. Some ingredients, including concentrated permethrin products intended for dogs, can seriously poison cats. Use only a product labeled for cats and the cat’s weight. If a cat develops tremors, incoordination, excessive salivation, vomiting, seizures, or extreme lethargy after a flea product, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately.

2. Reduce hunting and scavenging

Keep cats indoors where practical, prevent access to rodents and other prey, and do not allow them to eat hunted animals. Avoid feeding raw meat or raw prey unless a veterinarian has helped you assess the risks and diet.

3. Keep litter areas clean

Remove feces promptly, clean litter boxes regularly, and wash your hands after handling stool, litter, or contaminated bedding. Good hygiene is sensible, but it does not replace flea control because the flea tapeworm’s life cycle depends on an infected flea.

Can people catch tapeworms from cats?

People do not usually acquire a cat’s flea tapeworm by petting or touching the cat. Human infection generally occurs when someone accidentally swallows an infected flea. Cases are uncommon and are usually treatable, but young children are the group most likely to be affected.

Encourage children to wash their hands after handling pets, discourage them from putting fleas or dirty objects in their mouths, and keep them away from animal feces. Ask a doctor about possible infection if a person develops symptoms or passes rice-like segments.

When to call the veterinarian

Arrange veterinary care if you see suspected tapeworm segments, especially if the cat is a kitten, elderly, pregnant, underweight, or medically fragile. Prompt advice is also appropriate for a heavy flea infestation, continuing segments after correctly administered treatment, or a cat that hunts regularly.

Seek urgent veterinary advice for repeated vomiting, severe lethargy, collapse, seizures, bloody stool, marked dehydration, or a suspected reaction to a deworming or flea-control product.

Common tapeworm mistakes

Claim What is more accurate
“The fecal test was negative, so there are no tapeworms.” Routine flotation can miss tapeworms, particularly when segments were not included in the sample.
“One deworming treatment permanently solves the problem.” Fleas or infected prey can cause reinfection.
“Every wormer treats tapeworms.” Many products target roundworms, hookworms, or heartworms but not tapeworms.
“An indoor cat cannot get tapeworms.” Fleas can live indoors, and an indoor cat may swallow one while grooming.
“Dog flea medicine is interchangeable with cat flea medicine.” Never use dog-labeled flea or tick medicine on a cat; some ingredients are substantially more toxic to cats.
“Scooting proves tapeworms.” Scooting has several possible causes and is less typical in cats than in dogs.
“You should always see worms in the litter box after treatment.” The treated parasite may be digested inside the intestine.

FAQ

How do I know if my cat has tapeworms?

Look for moving white segments that resemble grains of rice on fresh stool, around the anus, or on bedding. Take a photograph or a fresh segment to your veterinarian because routine fecal testing can miss tapeworms.

Can indoor cats get tapeworms?

Yes. Indoor cats can swallow infected fleas that enter the home. They can also be exposed if they catch rodents or have contact with an infested animal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does it take for tapeworm treatment to work?

The exact schedule depends on the product and parasite. You may not see worms afterward because they can be digested. Continuing or returning segments usually means the veterinarian should reassess treatment and flea or prey exposure.

Can I use an over-the-counter dewormer or dog flea medicine?

Only use a dewormer labeled for cats and suitable for that cat’s age and weight, or one prescribed by a veterinarian. Never apply dog flea medicine to a cat; some dog products can cause life-threatening poisoning.

The Bottom Line

Tapeworms in cats are usually recognized by rice-like segments and are commonly linked to swallowed infected fleas or hunted prey. A veterinarian can select an effective cat-safe treatment, often praziquantel, but medication alone is not enough: control fleas in the home and on every household pet, reduce hunting, and seek veterinary advice if signs persist or the cat is unwell.
