Yellow liquid is usually bile, a digestive fluid made by the liver. It may appear when a cat vomits with little food in its stomach, so a single episode can follow an empty-stomach spell or mild irritation. But color alone cannot identify the cause or show how serious the problem is: yellow vomit can also accompany gastrointestinal disease, pancreatitis, liver or gallbladder disease, kidney disease, parasites, toxins, or an intestinal blockage.
The most useful clues are how often your cat is vomiting, whether they are eating and drinking, and whether anything else has changed.
What yellow cat vomit can mean
Bile can look yellow, yellow-green, or greenish-brown. It may be mixed with foam, water, hair, food, or mucus. The appearance alone cannot distinguish a minor stomach upset from a medical emergency.

Veterinary references from the Merck Veterinary Manual and Cornell Feline Health Center describe vomiting as a symptom with many possible causes—not a diagnosis based on color.

When yellow vomiting is an emergency
Call a veterinarian promptly if your cat vomits repeatedly or more than once or twice in a day. Seek urgent care if vomiting occurs with any of the following:
- weakness, marked sleepiness, collapse, or behavior that is clearly abnormal;
- abdominal swelling, tenderness, or signs of pain;
- inability to keep water down or signs of dehydration;
- refusal to eat, weight loss, or worsening appetite;
- blood in the vomit;
- diarrhea or constipation;
- drinking or urinating much more or less than usual;
- yellow gums, eyes, or skin; or
- possible ingestion of string, medication, a toxic plant, antifreeze, chemicals, or another poisonous substance.
Repeated vomiting combined with pain, weakness, dehydration, blood, jaundice, suspected poisoning, or possible obstruction should be treated as an emergency. An intestinal blockage or toxin exposure can become life-threatening without treatment.

What to do while you arrange veterinary care
- Remove hazards. Keep your cat away from plants, string, food scraps, medications, cleaning products, and anything else they may have swallowed.
- Keep fresh water available. Do not deliberately withhold water unless a veterinarian tells you to. Vomiting can already cause dehydration.
- Do not force food. If vomiting has stopped and your cat is bright, comfortable, and interested in food, ask your veterinarian whether to offer small, frequent portions of an easily digested diet. Avoid introducing several new foods at once.
- Track the episode. Note the number of times your cat vomits, the timing in relation to meals, appetite, water intake, urination, stool, and behavior. Photographing the vomit or recording an episode can help a veterinarian distinguish vomiting from coughing or regurgitation.
Do not try to make your cat vomit
Never give a cat hydrogen peroxide, salt, oil, milk, mustard, ipecac, or another household remedy to induce vomiting. Hydrogen peroxide can injure cats, and there is no reliably safe at-home substance for inducing vomiting in them.
If poisoning is possible, contact a veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately. Keep the product packaging, plant, or medication information available if possible.

Should you withhold food for 24 hours?
Do not automatically put a cat on a 24-hour fast. A cat that stops eating can become seriously ill, and hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) may develop after several days of poor food intake, particularly in overweight cats. If your cat is refusing food or keeps vomiting, contact a veterinarian for specific feeding instructions rather than waiting out a fixed fasting period.
What a veterinarian may do
The veterinarian will ask about the vomiting’s frequency, timing after meals, appetite, stool, weight, medical history, and possible exposure to toxins or foreign objects. They may also examine the mouth and abdomen and assess hydration, pain, temperature, and signs of jaundice.

Depending on the findings, tests may include:
- bloodwork to assess organs, inflammation, glucose, and hydration-related changes;
- urinalysis and fecal testing;
- abdominal X-rays to look for obstruction or other abnormalities;
- ultrasound to assess the intestines, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, and other abdominal organs; or
- endoscopy or exploratory surgery when a lodged object or another serious problem is suspected.
Treatment depends on the cause. It may include fluids, anti-nausea medication, nutritional support, deworming, a prescription diet, an antidote, or surgery.

Is yellow vomit normal for cats?
Yellow vomit is often bile, especially when the stomach is empty, but it is not automatically normal. One isolated episode in an otherwise bright cat may resolve, while repeated vomiting or other signs of illness need veterinary attention.

Why is my cat vomiting yellow liquid but acting normal?
A single episode may result from an empty stomach or mild irritation. Monitor closely, keep water available, and contact your veterinarian if vomiting recurs, appetite changes, or your cat develops diarrhea, pain, lethargy, or other abnormal signs.
Can hairballs cause yellow vomit?
Yes. A hairball can be mixed with bile and digestive fluid. However, frequent hairball vomiting, repeated unproductive retching, poor appetite, or lethargy can indicate significant stomach irritation or an obstruction and should be assessed by a veterinarian.
What can I give my cat for yellow vomiting?
Do not give human medicines or household remedies, and do not use hydrogen peroxide or other substances to induce vomiting. Keep water available and ask a veterinarian about feeding once vomiting has stopped. Suspected poisoning or a swallowed object requires immediate veterinary advice.
The Bottom Line
One episode of yellow liquid in an alert cat that continues eating, drinking, and behaving normally may pass without treatment. Yellow bile is not, however, a diagnosis. Repeated vomiting, appetite loss, pain, weakness, dehydration, blood, jaundice, or possible toxin or foreign-object ingestion warrants prompt veterinary care.
