A cooling dog bed can make hot-weather rest more comfortable, but the eight beds below do not cool dogs in the same way. Elevated cots improve airflow, water beds absorb heat without electricity, gel pads provide temporary pressure-activated cooling, and frozen inserts deliver the strongest short-term chill.

Our picks include outdoor cots, orthopedic options, beds for destructive chewers, and compact pads for crates or travel. Prices and availability can change; prices noted here were the manufacturers’ listed prices when checked.

Quick comparison

Bed Best for Cooling method Key limitation

The 8 best cooling dog beds

1. K&H Coolin’ Pet Cot: best overall for outdoor use

The K&H Coolin’ Pet Cot combines two useful features for warm patios, campsites, and yards: a 7-inch-high elevated frame and a sewn-in cooling center. Air can move under the dog, while the sleeping surface is lifted away from hot ground.

It comes in Medium, measuring 25 × 32 × 7 inches, and Large, measuring 30 × 42 × 7 inches. K&H lists a maximum supported weight of 200 pounds. No electricity, refrigeration, or water filling is required.

The cooling center remains at ambient temperature rather than becoming refrigerator-cold. K&H recommends shade and outdoor use below 95°F. The cover can be wiped clean, but it is not machine-washable. A newly assembled cot may initially sit unevenly; the manufacturer says adding weight, without exceeding the 200-pound limit, can help it settle.

Price when checked: $93.99 list price, discounted to $59.98.

Choose it if: your dog likes elevated beds and needs a low-maintenance option for outdoor lounging.

2. Coolaroo Original Elevated Pet Bed: best simple budget cot

The Coolaroo is a straightforward elevated platform with no gel, water chamber, ice insert, or power cord. Its fabric sleeping surface is raised above a powder-coated steel frame, allowing air to circulate beneath the dog.

Official sizes are Small, 90 × 55 × 20 cm; Medium, 110 × 65 × 20 cm; and Large, 130 × 80 × 20 cm. The bed is designed for indoor or outdoor use, and the fabric can be hosed off. Coolaroo also says the material resists fleas, mites, mold, and mildew and includes a one-year warranty.

This is ventilation rather than active cooling. It will not make the surface colder than the surrounding air, so shade is still essential. It is a particularly sensible choice for dogs that dislike the unstable feel of gel or water beds.

Choose it if: you want the least complicated outdoor bed and your dog is comfortable sleeping on a taut fabric platform.

3. K9 Ballistics Chew Proof Armored Mesh Elevated Dog Bed: best for heavy chewers

The K9 Ballistics Armored Mesh bed uses an aluminum frame and open-weave mesh, giving it excellent ventilation and leaving fewer soft edges for a dog to grab. The company lists support for up to 250 pounds of stationary weight. Related Armored sizes are designed around standard wire crates, including Medium at 35 × 22 inches, Large at 41 × 27 inches, XL at 47 × 29 inches, and XXL at 50 × 33 inches.

It is a strong candidate for dogs that chew bedding but do not aggressively dig. The important qualification is that “chew proof” does not mean indestructible. K9 Ballistics rates this mesh version at only 2/10 for scratch resistance and 0/10 for waterproofing. A dog that digs or claws repeatedly can damage the mesh.

The company recommends supervising a dog while introducing the bed. Inspect the surface and frame regularly, especially if your dog attacks fabric rather than simply chewing its edges.

Price when checked: $120 list price, discounted to $96.

Our cooling material covers the entire surface of the cover and is also present on the sides, it is not the foam!
  • Orthopedic Foam Support and Anxiety Relief for Dogs: The sides of the dog bed can be used as pillows, and the high-density egg crate memory foam provides orthopedic and joint support for dogs and cats of all ages, especially puppies or senior dogs. The ultimate comfort and safety offer your pet stable sleep.
  • High Quality and Durability: COZY KISS dog sofa bed is made from high-quality, scratch-resistant fabric that is tear-resistant, able to withstand long-term challenges—even from playful dogs! It features a 25D foam mattress and a middle layer of waterproof lining fabric that prevents urine from seeping in, keeping the foam clean and significantly extending the product’s lifespan.
  • Non-Slip Bottom: The Oxford cloth at the bottom of this dog bed is covered with many small rubber anti-slip particles, ensuring the bed stays in place on the floor and preventing slipping when your dog plays or sleeps on it. This provides a sense of security for your furry friend. It can also be used in the car’s trunk to keep your pet comfortable on trips, even during hot summer days.
  • Easy to Use: The cooling dog bed requires no installation—simply unpack and leave it for 48 hours before use. Cleaning is also very simple; just unzip, remove the egg crate foam, and wash the fabric cover by hand or in a washing machine. Note: Due to vacuum compression, there may be wrinkles when first opened, but these will disappear after a short period of rest.

Choose it if: your dog destroys cushioned beds but is more of a chewer than a determined digger.

4. K&H Coolin’ Comfort Bed: best cooling bed for senior or arthritic dogs

The Coolin’ Comfort Bed is the most supportive choice in this group. It combines a water-filled cooling design with a thick orthopedic foam core, giving older dogs a cushioned surface instead of a taut cot or thin pad.

Sizes are Small, 17 × 24 inches; Medium, 22 × 32 inches; and Large, 32 × 44 inches. K&H says the bed uses no electricity or toxic gel and does not require routine refilling after the initial fill. It should be cleaned by hand with a damp towel or sponge rather than put in a washing machine.

Keep it shaded and use it below 100°F, according to K&H. It is not puncture-proof and is specifically not recommended for destructive pets. A dog that chews through the cover could expose the water chamber or internal materials.

Price when checked: the Large was listed at $162.99, discounted to $97.98.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if: your dog has arthritis, hip dysplasia, or age-related stiffness and needs cooling without sacrificing cushioning.

5. CoolerDog Hydro Cooling Mat: best for the strongest, most controllable cooling

The CoolerDog Hydro Cooling Mat uses a waterbed cushion, a removable FlexiFreeze ice sheet, and a half-inch insulating foam insert. The included ice sheet contains the equivalent of approximately 88 ice cubes, making this a more direct cooling system than a passive cot or ambient-temperature water pad.

The standard mat measures 18 × 23 × 1.25 inches and weighs 5.5 pounds. Additional mats can be connected with snaps to create a larger cooling area. The outer cover is machine-washable once the internal components have been removed.

The tradeoff is maintenance. You need freezer space, and continuous use requires a rotation of frozen ice sheets. The standard Hydro Cooling Mat was out of stock on the official site when checked, so confirm availability before buying. Replacement ice sheets are sold separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if: your dog needs more noticeable cooling for indoor rest, car trips, RV travel, or particularly hot days and you can manage frozen inserts.

6. K&H Cool Bed III: best refillable water bed

The Cool Bed III uses a water-saturated internal core rather than gel, electricity, or a frozen insert. It suits owners who want water-based cooling but do not want to refill a liquid chamber or keep components in the freezer.

K&H gives no stated dog weight limit, but the filled bed must be moved carefully. Lifting it by the corners can separate the internal foam core from the sides. Place it on a smooth surface, keep it out of direct sunlight, and use it below 100°F. It is not machine-washable.

7. Green Pet Shop Cool Pet Pad: best pressure-activated gel pad

The Green Pet Shop Cool Pet Pad is a convenient option for indoor use, crates, and air-conditioned vehicles. The pressure-activated gel requires no water, electricity, or refrigeration. The manufacturer says it cools for up to three hours and recharges after approximately 15–20 minutes without pressure.

Available sizes range from XS, 11.8 × 15.7 inches, through XL, 27.5 × 43.3 inches. Intermediate options include Small at 15.7 × 19.7 inches, Medium at 20 × 30 inches, and Large at 23.6 × 35 inches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not leave it in direct sunlight, a hot car, or another hot environment. The pad absorbs heat from its surroundings and may become ineffective. It is also a poor match for dogs that chew or scratch. Although the manufacturer describes the gel as non-toxic, it advises veterinary attention if gel is ingested.

Price when checked: from $24.99, with some variants listed as sold out.

Choose it if: your dog is not destructive and you want a foldable, low-effort cooling pad for a controlled indoor environment.

8. K&H Coolin’ Pet Pad: best lightweight water-based pad

The K&H Coolin’ Pet Pad is a portable water-filled pad that can be used on its own or placed over another bed. It contains no toxic gel and does not need refrigeration, but it stays at approximately ambient air temperature. Its benefit is heat absorption, not an artificially chilled surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sizes are Small, 11 × 15 inches; Medium, 15 × 20 inches; Large, 20 × 36 inches; and X-Large, 27 × 38 inches. K&H recommends using it on wood, tile, or another hard surface. Carpet can retain heat and reduce its effectiveness.

How to choose the right cooling bed

Start with the cooling method

  • Elevated cots: improve airflow under the dog. They are practical outdoors but do not actively refrigerate the sleeping surface.
  • Water-filled beds: absorb and transfer body heat, gradually warming toward room temperature. They are useful when you do not want electricity or frozen parts.
  • Gel pads: offer temporary pressure-activated cooling and need a break to recharge. They require close supervision around dogs that chew.
  • Frozen inserts: provide the most intense, controllable cooling, but require freezer room and spare inserts for rotation.

Measure the usable sleeping area

Measure your dog while fully stretched out, then compare that measurement with the bed’s usable sleeping surface. Do not rely only on the outside dimensions of a raised frame or the advertised size label. A dog should be able to lie comfortably without half its body hanging off the cooling area; when between sizes, the larger option is generally more comfortable if your space allows it.

Match the bed to the dog’s habits

For a destructive chewer, an elevated mesh bed is generally safer than a gel or water-filled pad, but even durable products need supervision during introduction. A scratcher or digger can damage mesh, so inspect it often. For a senior dog, prioritize a stable, cushioned surface such as the Coolin’ Comfort Bed rather than assuming the firmest or coldest option is best.

Consider where it will be used

Outdoor beds need shade and fresh water regardless of their cooling claims. Water and gel beds should be placed away from sharp flooring, direct sun, and heavy foot traffic. In a crate, car, or RV, check that the bed leaves enough room for the dog to turn around and that any water-filled model cannot be crushed against a door or frame.

Cooling-bed safety

A cooling bed is a comfort aid, not heatstroke protection. It does not replace shade, drinking water, rest, ventilation, or bringing a dog indoors during dangerous heat. Dogs can also ignore a bed, lie beside it, or become overheated despite using it.

Watch for excessive panting, heavy drooling, vomiting, weakness, disorientation, seizures, or collapse. These can indicate heatstroke, which is an emergency. Begin appropriate cooling measures while contacting a veterinarian immediately; do not delay veterinary care or attempt to treat suspected heatstroke with a cooling bed alone. The American Kennel Club’s first-aid guidance covers emergency response.

Inspect pads and beds before each period of heavy use. Look for punctures, exposed gel, leaking seams, loose covers, damaged mesh, and dampness underneath. Remove a damaged bed immediately, particularly if your dog may swallow its filling or internal components.

FAQ

Do cooling dog beds really work?

They can make resting more comfortable, but their effects depend on the design. Elevated cots increase airflow, water beds absorb heat toward room temperature, gel pads cool for a limited period, and frozen inserts provide stronger short-term cooling. None should be treated as a guarantee against overheating or heatstroke.

Which cooling bed is best for a dog that chews?

The K9 Ballistics Chew Proof Armored Mesh Elevated Dog Bed is the strongest match in this lineup for dogs that chew bedding. It is not indestructible, has limited scratch resistance, and should be introduced under supervision. Avoid leaving a chewing dog unattended with gel or water-filled beds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a cooling bed prevent heatstroke?

No. A cooling bed may reduce discomfort or risk, but it cannot replace shade, fresh water, ventilation, rest, and avoiding extreme heat. Excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, weakness, disorientation, seizures, or collapse require immediate cooling measures and veterinary attention.

Should a cooling dog bed go in direct sunlight?

No. Direct sunlight can heat the bed and reduce or reverse its cooling benefit. Place it in shade on a suitable surface, and follow the manufacturer’s temperature guidance. Check water and gel beds for leaks and keep them away from sharp objects.

The Bottom Line

For most outdoor setups, the K&H Coolin’ Pet Cot is the most versatile choice because it combines elevation with a cooling center and requires no water or freezer. Choose the Coolaroo for a simpler budget cot, the K9 Ballistics for a chewing dog, and the K&H Coolin’ Comfort Bed when orthopedic support matters most. If you need the strongest cooling effect, the CoolerDog Hydro Cooling Mat is the most controllable option, provided you have freezer space and can find it in stock.
