Veterinarians Compare Wet vs. Dry Cat Food

Neither wet nor dry cat food is best for every cat. Compare moisture, calories, medical needs, convenience, and the cat’s willingness to eat, and calculate total daily portions.

For most healthy cats, the better choice is not automatically wet or dry. Veterinarians emphasize whether the food is complete and balanced, how many calories the cat eats, hydration, medical needs, and whether the cat will reliably eat it.

The clearest difference is moisture: canned food usually contains at least 75% water, while dry food commonly contains about 6–10%. That can affect hydration, calorie density, and portion size, but a carefully measured dry diet—or a combination of wet and dry food—can also be appropriate.

Wet vs. dry cat food at a glance

Consideration Wet food Dry food
Moisture Usually at least 75% water Typically about 6–10% water
Calories by weight Usually less calorie-dense Usually more calorie-dense
Hydration Supplies water with the meal Requires the cat to drink more
Portion control Can provide a larger physical portion for fewer calories Easy to weigh, but easy to overfeed
Storage Opened food needs refrigeration and prompt handling Convenient to store and use in feeders
Dental care May be easier for cats with painful mouths Ordinary kibble does not reliably clean teeth
Cost Usually more expensive per calorie Usually less expensive per calorie

Neither format wins every category. The appropriate choice depends on the individual cat and the rest of the feeding plan.

When veterinarians favor wet cat food

It increases water intake

Wet food supplies water directly through the meal. It can be helpful for cats that drink little and for some cats with kidney or urinary conditions, though those diseases may require a specific therapeutic diet rather than just any canned food.

Dry-fed cats are not automatically dehydrated; they can get adequate water by drinking. Keep fresh water available. Some cats drink more when offered several bowls or a fountain.

It can make calorie control easier

Water adds weight and volume without adding calories. A cat may eat a larger physical serving of wet food for the same calories as a smaller serving of kibble, which can help with satiety. Wet food is not automatically a weight-loss food, however: use the package’s calorie information to determine portions.

It is often more appealing

Canned food is commonly palatable because of its smell, texture, and moisture, and can help during illness, appetite loss, or transitions to a therapeutic diet. A cat eating less may be ill, so do not treat an appetite change as merely pickiness.

It may be more comfortable with dental disease

A cat with painful teeth may refuse kibble, swallow it without chewing, or suddenly prefer soft food. That preference can be a warning sign, not evidence that the cat has become fussy. Dental disease, including tooth resorption, warrants a veterinary examination.

Limitations of wet food

  • It costs more per calorie. Canned food includes substantial water and packaging costs.
  • It requires careful handling. Refrigerate opened food and follow the product’s storage instructions. VCA advises discarding food left in the dish for about 30 minutes and refrigerated leftovers after about three days; manufacturer directions should take precedence.
  • Some products are not complete diets. A gourmet topper, broth, treat, or specialty food may be labeled for “intermittent or supplemental feeding” only. Check the label before using it as the main diet.
  • It may be inconvenient for grazing cats. Wet food cannot safely sit out all day like properly stored kibble.

When dry cat food makes sense

It is convenient and economical

Kibble is easy to store, transport, measure, and use in a multi-cat household. It generally costs less per calorie and works well for owners who want a feeding routine with less preparation.

It suits measured grazing and food puzzles

Some cats prefer small meals throughout the day. A measured daily portion of dry food can be divided among meals, an automatic feeder, or puzzle toys.

Free-choice feeding is different: leaving unlimited kibble available can cause overeating, especially in an indoor or inactive cat. Dry food is calorie-dense, so even a small-looking amount can represent a substantial share of daily calories.

It is simple to portion precisely

Use a kitchen scale when possible. The label’s calorie statement tells you how many calories are in a given weight or serving. Weighing the daily amount is more reliable than estimating with a cup, especially for a cat gaining weight.

Limitations of dry food

It provides little water

A cat eating only kibble must drink enough to make up the difference between the food’s low moisture content and its total water needs. Keep fresh water available and consider additional bowls or a fountain if useful for your cat.

It is easy to overfeed

Feeding directions are starting points, not guarantees. Adjust portions according to body weight, body-condition score, activity, age, and health. Treats count toward daily calories too.

Ordinary kibble is not dental care

Standard kibble does not reliably remove plaque or prevent dental disease. Certain dental diets are specifically designed for oral-health benefits, but they are not interchangeable with ordinary dry food. Daily tooth brushing, veterinary dental checks, and products recommended by your veterinarian remain important.

What matters more than wet versus dry?

  1. Complete and balanced nutrition. Look for a nutritional adequacy statement showing that the food is complete and balanced for cats and the appropriate life stage. AAFCO does not approve or certify individual brands; state regulators enforce pet-food labeling requirements.
  2. Total calories. Find the label’s “Calorie Content” statement. Your veterinarian can help set a daily calorie target, then divide it among wet food, dry food, treats, and supplements.
  3. Body condition. Monitor weight and body shape rather than judging a diet by the bowl’s appearance. Your veterinarian can show you what an ideal body-condition score looks like.
  4. Medical needs. Kidney disease, diabetes, urinary disease, food allergies, obesity, and dental pain can change the best nutrient profile or texture. Therapeutic diets may be available in wet, dry, or both forms; the disease determines the recommendation, not format alone.
  5. Reliable intake. A nutritionally excellent food is not useful if the cat refuses it. Do not force a sudden diet change in a cat already eating poorly. A cat that stops eating or is losing weight needs veterinary assessment; sudden starvation during weight loss can cause hepatic lipidosis.

How to read wet and dry food labels fairly

Guaranteed-analysis figures are usually listed on an “as-fed” basis, which includes the food’s water. Since wet food contains far more water, its listed percentages appear diluted. To compare nutrients, convert to a dry-matter basis:

Dry-matter percentage = (as-fed percentage ÷ (100 − moisture percentage)) × 100

For example, food containing 10% protein and 78% moisture has 45.5% protein on a dry-matter basis: 10 ÷ (100 − 78) × 100 = 45.5%. Compare calories separately using the package’s calorie statement. A higher protein number alone does not prove that one food is better for a particular cat.

Can a cat eat a combination of wet and dry food?

Yes. Mixed feeding is practical for many cats: wet food can contribute water and palatability, while dry food can work in an automatic feeder or puzzle toy. Calculate total daily calories rather than feeding the full recommended amount of each food.

Claims that need qualification

“Dry food cleans cats’ teeth.”

Ordinary kibble is not a substitute for dental care. Some dental diets may help, but painful dental disease can also make kibble difficult to eat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Wet food causes obesity.”

Excess calories cause weight gain, not moisture. Wet food is often less calorie-dense, but unlimited servings can still make a cat overweight.

“Dry food is unhealthy because it contains grains or by-products.”

Ingredient names alone do not determine whether a diet is adequate. The complete-and-balanced statement, calorie content, nutrient profile, and the cat’s medical needs are more useful criteria.

“Wet food prevents urinary problems.”

Additional water may help some cats, but lower urinary tract disease has several possible causes. A product marketed for urinary health does not guarantee prevention. A cat straining to urinate, making repeated litter-box trips, crying, or producing little urine needs prompt veterinary attention—especially a male cat, because obstruction is an emergency.

A practical veterinarian-style choice

For a healthy cat, select a complete-and-balanced food the cat eats consistently, calculate daily calories, monitor body condition, and provide fresh water. Wet food is a strong practical choice when hydration, appetite, calorie density, or dental comfort is a concern. Dry food is reasonable when cost, convenience, grazing, automatic feeders, or puzzle feeding matter, provided portions are measured and water is available.

Ask your veterinarian to design the diet if your cat has kidney disease, diabetes, urinary disease, obesity, persistent appetite changes, weight loss, vomiting, or signs of dental pain. The question is not simply “wet or dry?” but which nutrients, calories, texture, and feeding schedule fit this cat’s condition.

FAQ

Is wet food healthier than dry food for cats?

Not universally. Either can be appropriate if it is complete and balanced, fed in the correct calorie amount, and suitable for the cat’s health and preferences. Wet food’s main practical advantage is its high moisture content.

Can cats eat both wet and dry food?

Yes. Mixed feeding is acceptable for many cats. Calculate total daily calories from both foods and treats so the combination fits the cat’s needs.

Does dry cat food clean a cat’s teeth?

Ordinary kibble does not reliably clean teeth or prevent dental disease. Specially formulated dental diets may provide some oral-health benefit, but brushing and veterinary dental care are still important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should cats with kidney or urinary disease eat wet food?

More dietary water may help, but the best diet depends on the diagnosis. Cats with kidney or urinary disease may need a specific veterinary therapeutic diet, available in wet, dry, or both forms.

The Bottom Line

Wet food is not automatically better, and dry food is not automatically unhealthy. Choose a complete-and-balanced diet, measure calories, monitor body condition, support hydration, and account for medical needs. For many cats, a carefully calculated mix of wet and dry food is a practical option.
