A Bernedoodle is a mixed-breed cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. It may inherit the Bernese’s affectionate, family-oriented nature and the Poodle’s intelligence and activity, but size, coat, shedding, and temperament vary from dog to dog. It is not a standardized purebred, and a low-shedding coat is not a guarantee of being allergy-friendly.

A Bernedoodle can suit an involved household prepared for training, daily activity, companionship, and regular grooming. Mixed-breed status does not remove inherited health risks, and labels such as “mini,” “F1b,” or “hypoallergenic” cannot guarantee a particular adult dog.

Bernedoodle at a glance

Characteristic What to expect
Parent breeds Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle
Breed status Mixed breed; no single AKC breed standard
Common sizes Toy, Mini, and Standard
Typical temperament Often affectionate, social, intelligent, playful, and sometimes sensitive
Exercise Daily physical activity plus training or other mental work
Coat Curly, wavy, or relatively straight; shedding varies
Grooming Regular brushing and grooming; curly or wavy coats can mat
Good fit for People able to provide companionship, training, exercise, and regular grooming

These are broad tendencies, not guarantees. The Poodle parent may contribute intelligence, trainability, activity, and a lower-shedding coat. The Bernese Mountain Dog may contribute a gentle, devoted, family-focused nature. A puppy can inherit any combination of those traits.

Bernedoodle size and appearance

There is no universally accepted Bernedoodle size chart. Size depends mainly on the size of the Poodle parent, along with the puppy’s particular genetics. Common estimates are:

Type Approximate adult size
Standard Bernedoodle About 61–100 pounds and up to roughly 29 inches tall
Mini Bernedoodle About 20–45 pounds and up to roughly 22 inches tall
Toy Bernedoodle Under 20 pounds and approximately 12–17 inches tall

These are estimates, not formal limits. A mixed-generation dog can fall outside them, so ask about the adult weights of both parents and close relatives rather than relying only on labels such as “mini” or “toy.”

Bernedoodles commonly have floppy ears, a sturdy build, and coats containing black, white, brown, or rust. The familiar tricolor pattern is associated with the Bernese side, but color and markings do not predict temperament or health. Appearance varies because this cross does not breed true to one standardized conformation.

Bernedoodle generations explained

Generation labels describe ancestry. They do not guarantee a particular appearance, adult weight, coat, personality, or allergy profile.

  • F1: A Bernese Mountain Dog crossed with a Poodle.
  • F1b: An F1 Bernedoodle crossed back to a Poodle.
  • F2: An F1 Bernedoodle crossed with another F1 Bernedoodle.
  • Later generations: Additional Bernedoodle-to-Bernedoodle or backcross breeding, depending on the breeder’s program.

An F1b has more Poodle ancestry on average, but that does not guarantee a curly coat, low shedding, or suitability for someone with allergies. Evaluate the individual dog and its parents rather than treating a generation label as a promise.

Bernedoodle temperament and behavior

Many Bernedoodles are affectionate, playful, clever, and eager to participate in family life. They may enjoy walks, retrieving games, scent work, trick training, or dog sports. Their intelligence can make training rewarding, but a dog that is under-exercised or under-stimulated may develop nuisance behaviors.

The Bernese Mountain Dog parent tends to be gentle, social, and attached to its family, but may be sensitive or reserved with unfamiliar people. Poodles are typically active, highly intelligent, people-oriented, and responsive to training. A Bernedoodle may inherit any combination of these characteristics. Early environment, socialization, genetics, and training all matter.

Common problems in an under-stimulated or poorly trained Bernedoodle can include jumping, leash pulling, destructive chewing, excessive barking, and difficulty settling. A large Standard can be particularly challenging if it learns to use its weight before polite behavior is taught.

Training and socialization

Start reward-based training as soon as the puppy comes home. Short sessions repeated throughout the day are generally more productive than one long, frustrating lesson. Useful early priorities include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Responding to its name and coming when called.
  2. Loose-leash walking and calm greetings.
  3. Settling on a mat or bed.
  4. Comfort with handling of paws, ears, mouth, and coat.
  5. Comfort with a crate or safe confinement area.
  6. Leaving food, household objects, and people’s clothing alone.

Socialization means carefully introducing the puppy to people, surfaces, sounds, car travel, grooming, and appropriate dogs while keeping experiences positive. It does not mean forcing a worried puppy into frightening situations. A qualified trainer or veterinary behavior professional can help if fear, reactivity, or separation-related distress develops.

Exercise needs

Exercise requirements vary with size, age, health, and individual temperament. Standard Bernedoodles are usually more demanding physically than Toy or Mini Bernedoodles, but all sizes need regular activity and mental engagement. A practical routine can combine walks, play, brief training sessions, food puzzles, and sniffing opportunities.

Growing puppies should not be pushed into strenuous, repetitive, high-impact exercise. Large-breed puppies are particularly vulnerable to orthopedic injury from excessive impact or over-exercise. Increase activity gradually and ask your veterinarian how to structure it for the puppy’s age, growth, body condition, and orthopedic risk.

Bernedoodles are generally a poor fit for a household that expects a dog to spend most of the day alone. Both parent breeds value interaction, and an intelligent dog without an outlet may create its own entertainment.

Coat, shedding, and allergies

Bernedoodle coats may be curly, wavy, or relatively straight. Curly and wavy coats may shed less, but they are more prone to tangling and matting. A straighter, more Bernese-like coat may shed more. Coat behavior cannot be reliably predicted from a generation label alone.

No Bernedoodle is completely hypoallergenic. Allergens come from sources including dander and saliva, and people may react differently to individual dogs. If someone in the household has allergies, spend time with the specific dog before making a commitment. An F1b is not a guaranteed solution.

Grooming requirements

Bernedoodle grooming is a significant, recurring responsibility. Brush through the entire coat down to the skin regularly; longer or curlier coats may need frequent attention. Surface brushing can leave dense mats hidden underneath, especially around the ears, collar, armpits, legs, and tail.

Many Bernedoodles need professional grooming and clipping, especially those with curly coats. A shorter trim reduces tangling but does not eliminate brushing or other care. Owners should also plan for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Regular nail trims.
  • Routine ear checks, particularly if the ears are hairy or the dog swims.
  • Tooth brushing with dog-safe toothpaste.
  • Bathing when dirty or as recommended by the groomer or veterinarian.
  • Gradual practice with clippers, dryers, brushes, nail tools, and handling.

Mats can pull on the skin, cause irritation, and contribute to infection. If a coat is severely matted, ask a professional groomer or veterinarian for help rather than cutting close to the skin at home.

Bernedoodle health concerns

Crossbreeding does not make a dog automatically free of inherited disease. A Bernedoodle can inherit health risks associated with either parent breed. Possible concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, eye disease, cardiac disease, degenerative myelopathy, patellar problems in smaller dogs, and bloat in larger dogs. These are risks to investigate, not predictions that every Bernedoodle will develop them.

Before choosing a puppy, ask for verifiable health evaluations for both parents. Recommended screening areas commonly include:

Parent Screening areas to ask about
Bernese Mountain Dog Hips, elbows, heart, eyes, and degenerative myelopathy DNA testing, including relevant Bernese variants
Standard Poodle Hips, eyes, thyroid, von Willebrand disease I, and neonatal encephalopathy with seizures testing or clear-by-parentage documentation

Ask for records from recognized health databases, such as the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) where applicable, and check the parents’ registered names or identification numbers yourself. “DNA tested,” “vet checked,” or “healthy by parentage” is not a substitute for the appropriate orthopedic, eye, cardiac, thyroid, and genetic evaluations.

A CHIC number indicates that required tests were completed and results made available; it does not mean every result was normal or guarantee that the dog will remain healthy. Even well-screened parents can produce puppies that later develop disease.

Bernedoodle lifespan

Published Bernedoodle lifespan estimates vary by size and source. PetMD lists about 12–15 years for Standards, 14–16 years for Minis, and up to 18 years for Toys; Zoetis gives a general estimate of 12–16 years. These estimates are not promises for an individual dog.

For context, the American Kennel Club lists a life expectancy of 7–10 years for Bernese Mountain Dogs and 10–18 years for Poodles. Adult size, inherited disease, nutrition, body condition, preventive veterinary care, and overall health all affect longevity. The health and longevity of the specific family lines deserve close attention.

A Standard Bernedoodle may be a large, strong dog, not an oversized plush toy. Children should always be supervised with any dog, particularly during feeding, resting, or high-energy play. Families should consider whether they can manage a large dog that jumps, pulls, becomes anxious when isolated, or needs extensive grooming.

A Bernedoodle may be a poor match if you need a reliably hypoallergenic dog, want a low-maintenance coat, work long hours away from home without a care plan, or cannot provide consistent training and daily engagement.

What to verify before buying a Bernedoodle puppy

  1. Request the registered names and identification numbers of both parents.
  2. Search the parents’ health records in OFA or another relevant database; do not rely only on screenshots or verbal assurances.
  3. Confirm appropriate hip, elbow, eye, cardiac, and applicable DNA testing for the Bernese parent.
  4. Confirm appropriate hip, eye, and applicable DNA or thyroid testing for the Poodle parent and variety involved.
  5. Ask for the puppy’s veterinary examination, vaccination, parasite-control, and identification records.
  6. Ask how the puppies have experienced household noises, handling, grooming, visitors, transport, and age-appropriate socialization.
  7. Read a written contract covering health guarantees, return provisions, and breeder support.
  8. Ask to meet the mother and, when possible, learn about the father’s temperament and health.

Be cautious of sellers who guarantee a particular adult size, claim every puppy is hypoallergenic, refuse to show health documentation, or use “designer breed” language in place of specific records. A responsible breeder should also ask you detailed questions; matching a puppy to a suitable home matters as much as making a sale.

FAQ

Are Bernedoodles hypoallergenic?

No. Bernedoodles are not completely hypoallergenic. Curly or wavy coats may shed less, but allergen levels vary between individual dogs. Anyone with allergies should spend time with the specific dog before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How big does a Bernedoodle get?

Common estimates range from under 20 pounds for Toy Bernedoodles to about 61–100 pounds for Standards, with Minis often around 20–45 pounds. These are not official limits, and actual size depends on genetics and the parents’ sizes.

Do Bernedoodles shed?

Some shed very little, while others shed more. Curly, wavy, and straighter coats can all occur. Generation labels such as F1b cannot guarantee a low-shedding coat.

Are Bernedoodles easy to train?

Many are intelligent and responsive to reward-based training, but they still need consistent teaching, socialization, exercise, and mental stimulation. Size, sensitivity, energy, and boredom can make poor training difficult to manage.

How long do Bernedoodles live?

Published estimates vary. PetMD lists approximately 12–15 years for Standards, 14–16 years for Minis, and up to 18 years for Toys; Zoetis gives a general estimate of 12–16 years. These are estimates, not guarantees.

The Bottom Line

Bernedoodles can be affectionate, trainable, entertaining companions, but they are not predictable or low-maintenance simply because they are a popular cross. Choose based on the individual dog, the parents’ verified health records, coat-care commitment, and time available for daily training and companionship—not on promises of a guaranteed size, temperament, or allergy-friendly coat.
