Orangutans are intelligent great apes—not monkeys—and they are wild animals, not suitable household pets. They need vast, complex forest habitats, specialized diets, constant enrichment and lifelong care from trained professionals. All three living species are currently classified as Critically Endangered, so buying, breeding or keeping an orangutan privately can harm both the individual animal and wild populations.

What is an orangutan?

An orangutan is a great ape in the genus Pongo, related to humans, gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos. The name comes from Malay words commonly translated as “person of the forest.” Unlike monkeys, orangutans have no external tail.

They are recognizable by their reddish-orange hair, extremely long arms, grasping hands and feet, and deliberate movements through the canopy. Orangutans are the largest mammals that spend most of their lives in trees.

The three orangutan species

Species Scientific name Where it lives Conservation status
Bornean orangutan Pongo pygmaeus Borneo Critically Endangered
Sumatran orangutan Pongo abelii Northern Sumatra Critically Endangered
Tapanuli orangutan Pongo tapanuliensis Batang Toru forest complex in northern Sumatra Critically Endangered

The American Society of Mammalogists’ Mammal Diversity Database recognizes the Tapanuli orangutan as a separate species, described in 2017 based on differences in body structure, behavior and genomic evidence. It is restricted to a small, fragmented area, making its conservation situation especially serious.

What do orangutans look like?

Orangutans have long, shaggy hair that ranges from orange to deep reddish-brown. Their arms are much longer than their legs, an adaptation that helps them move between branches. Their hands and feet can grip branches, and they can use their fingers with considerable precision.

Adult males may develop broad cheek pads called flanges and a large throat sac. These males produce powerful “long calls” that carry through the forest. Not every adult male is flanged; some remain unflanged and may develop cheek pads later, depending partly on their social circumstances.

Bornean orangutans generally spend more time on the ground than Sumatran orangutans. Sumatran orangutans often have longer facial hair, while Tapanuli orangutans have their own combination of physical and genetic traits.

Where do orangutans live?

Wild orangutans are found only on Borneo and Sumatra. Their habitats include tropical rainforests, lowland forests, swamp forests and peatlands. They rely heavily on connected tree cover for feeding, traveling, nesting and raising young.

Forest clearance for agriculture, plantations, logging and mining breaks continuous habitat into isolated patches. A fragmented forest may still contain trees, but it can leave orangutans with fewer feeding areas, fewer potential mates and more dangerous contact with people.

What do orangutans eat?

Fruit makes up much of an orangutan’s diet, but these apes are not strict fruit specialists. Depending on what is available, they also eat leaves, bark, flowers, insects and other plant material. Their food choices change with the seasons and with local forest conditions.

As they eat fruit and carry or pass seeds through the forest, orangutans help disperse plants. This is why they are sometimes called “gardeners of the forest.” Their role is ecological, not a sign that a captive orangutan can be fed an ordinary fruit-based household diet.

Orangutan behavior and intelligence

Orangutans are generally the most solitary of the great apes. Adult females commonly travel with dependent offspring, while adult males are often alone. They may come together temporarily where food is abundant, so “solitary” does not mean they never interact.

Each evening, an orangutan usually builds a sleeping nest from branches and leaves high in a tree. Individuals may also make daytime resting nests. Nest building is a learned, practical behavior that would be difficult to provide safely in a home.

Wild orangutans use tools. Observed examples include modifying sticks to obtain food, using leaves as sponges to collect water and preparing tools for later use. Some behaviors vary between populations and appear to be socially learned, which is why researchers cautiously discuss orangutan “culture.”

Do orangutans make good pets?

No. Orangutans are not appropriate pets. Their intelligence and human-like expressions can make them seem appealing, but those same qualities make private ownership especially problematic.

An orangutan needs a large, secure, three-dimensional environment rather than a room, cage or backyard enclosure. It needs climbing structures, changing enrichment, species-appropriate food, expert veterinary care and opportunities to make choices. An indoor living space cannot meet those needs as the animal grows.

Young orangutans can appear manageable, but this is temporary. They remain dependent on their mothers for years, and a human caregiver cannot replace the social and developmental environment provided by an orangutan family. As they mature, they become extremely strong, curious and difficult to control. A bored or frustrated adult can destroy household fixtures, escape, bite or cause severe injury even without malicious intent.

Private ownership also creates a conservation problem. Infants taken for the exotic-pet trade are often separated from their mothers, who may be killed during capture attempts. A tame-looking baby is therefore not evidence of a legitimate or harmless pet trade.

Can you legally own an orangutan?

Laws vary by country, state, province and municipality, but private ownership of orangutans is commonly prohibited or tightly restricted. Rules may cover possession, importation, breeding, transport, public display and the permits required for facilities holding great apes.

Before considering any exotic animal, check the rules with the relevant wildlife authority—not just a seller or social-media group. A permit, where one exists, does not mean an orangutan is suitable for a home. Accredited zoos, sanctuaries and rescue centers have specialized facilities, trained staff and long-term plans that private homes generally cannot provide.

How orangutans reproduce and raise young

Orangutans usually give birth to one infant; twins are rare. Pregnancy lasts approximately seven and a half to eight and a half months. Young orangutans remain dependent on their mothers for years and may nurse until around six or seven years of age.

Females typically give birth only once every seven to nine years, with Sumatran orangutans tending toward particularly long intervals. This slow reproductive rate means populations cannot quickly replace animals lost to hunting, habitat destruction or illegal capture.

Why are orangutans endangered?

  • Habitat conversion: Forests are cleared for agriculture, plantations, roads, logging and mining.
  • Fragmentation: Remaining forest may be divided into patches that restrict movement and reduce access to food and mates.
  • Hunting: Orangutans may be killed for food, captured, or killed when they enter farms and are viewed as pests.
  • Illegal trade: Infants are particularly sought after, and removing a baby commonly results in the mother’s death.
  • Fire and degradation: Human-caused fires can destroy forests, including carbon-rich peatlands.
  • Extreme weather: Heavy rainfall, landslides and other events can cause sudden losses in already restricted habitats.

Palm oil is often named as the threat by itself, but the more accurate concern is unsustainable plantation expansion and the forest clearing associated with it. Palm oil production is not automatically incompatible with conservation; the key issues include where and how plantations are developed and whether high-value forest is cleared.

How many orangutans are left?

Frequently cited working estimates are approximately 104,700 Bornean orangutans, 13,846 Sumatran orangutans and fewer than 800 Tapanuli orangutans. These are estimates, not exact head counts, and methods and dates differ between assessments. The World Wildlife Fund’s orangutan overview provides these commonly cited population figures; the 2025 landslide event means older Tapanuli estimates may not describe the current population precisely.

A 2026 study in Current Biology reported that extreme rainfall in northern Sumatra in November 2025 caused landslides across roughly 8,303 hectares in the Tapanuli orangutan’s West Block habitat. The study estimated that about 58 orangutans may have been killed or lost, with a reported range of approximately 18 to 120. This was not a direct count of bodies; it was an estimate based on mapped landslides, habitat overlap and population data. Read the study.

How can animal lovers help?

  1. Do not buy or share content promoting orangutan ownership. Cute infant videos can conceal illegal capture and harmful handling.
  2. Support reputable conservation organizations that protect habitat, rescue confiscated animals and work with local communities.
  3. Choose responsible palm-oil products where credible sourcing information is available, and avoid treating every palm-oil product as equally harmful.
  4. Visit accredited zoos or sanctuaries that explain conservation work and do not allow unsafe hands-on contact with orangutans.
  5. Report suspected trafficking to local wildlife authorities rather than attempting a private rescue.

If you encounter an orangutan in a human settlement, keep your distance, secure food and pets, and contact trained wildlife officials. Do not feed, chase, touch or try to capture it.

FAQ

Are orangutans dangerous to humans?

They are not normally aggressive toward people in the wild, but they are powerful wild animals. A frightened, frustrated or mature orangutan can inflict serious injuries, so close contact and private handling are unsafe.

How long do orangutans live?

Orangutans can live for several decades, particularly under professional human care. Their long lifespan is one reason taking on an orangutan is not a realistic short-term commitment.

What is the difference between an orangutan and a monkey?

Orangutans are great apes. They have no external tail and belong to the hominid family, alongside humans, gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos. Monkeys are a separate group of primates.

What should I do if I see an orangutan being kept as a pet?

Do not buy it, handle it or attempt a private rescue. Record useful information only if you can do so safely, then report the situation to the local wildlife authority or an established orangutan rescue organization.

The Bottom Line

Orangutans are remarkable, tool-using forest apes with complex social and developmental needs. They should remain in protected forests or in professional conservation facilities—not in homes, private collections or online pet markets. The most helpful response is to reject the exotic-pet trade and support habitat protection and legitimate rescue work.
