River otters are energetic mammals adapted for swimming in rivers, lakes, wetlands, estuaries, and some coastal habitats. The name usually refers to the North American river otter, Lontra canadensis, a wild predator—not a domesticated pet. Here are nine facts about how river otters swim, hunt, socialize, and recover from past population declines.
1. River otters are members of the weasel family
Despite their fish-shaped bodies and aquatic lifestyle, river otters are not rodents. The North American river otter belongs to the family Mustelidae, which also includes weasels, mink, badgers, ferrets, and wolverines.
“River otter” most often means Lontra canadensis in North American wildlife information, but other otter species, including the Eurasian otter and neotropical otter, also live in river habitats.
2. Their bodies are built for fast, controlled swimming
Nearly every part of a river otter’s body helps it move through water:

River otters also use wetlands, lakes, estuaries, and some coastal areas. Unlike sea otters, they spend substantial time on land.
3. They are larger than many people expect
Adult North American river otters generally weigh about 10 to 30 pounds and measure roughly 40 to 54 inches from head to tail. Size varies by source, region, and individual.
That length includes the tail. River otters have long, pointed tails; sea otters have shorter, flatter tails and are much more aquatic.
4. Fish are only part of the menu
River otters are opportunistic carnivores. Their diet varies with available prey and may include:

5. Their whiskers work like underwater sensors
River otters have sensitive whiskers, called vibrissae, around the muzzle. These whiskers detect movement in the water and help otters locate prey when visibility is poor or when searching along the bottom.
In cloudy or dark water, this sensory ability can help an otter find prey without relying only on sight.
6. Otter play may serve several practical purposes
River otters are known for sliding, chasing, wrestling, and splashing. These behaviors may help young otters practice movements and hunting skills, strengthen social bonds, or contribute to scent marking.

Playful behavior does not mean an otter is tame. A wild otter can be curious while remaining wary and capable of biting.
7. They may travel alone or in family groups
Adult river otters are often solitary, but females commonly stay with their pups. Family groups may remain together until the next litter arrives.
A group seen along a stream may be a mother and her young rather than a permanent colony. Observe otters from a distance; do not approach, corner, feed, or touch them.
8. Their reproductive timing includes a hidden delay
River otters use delayed implantation: after mating, the fertilized egg may remain dormant before attaching to the uterus. Active pregnancy lasts about two months, but the interval between mating and birth can be much longer.

9. Conservation helped bring them back in many places
Fur trapping, habitat loss, and water pollution caused severe historical declines in river otter populations. Reintroduction programs, cleaner waterways, and natural range expansion have helped restore otters in many regions.
These recoveries do not mean every local population is secure. Protecting clean water and suitable habitat supports river otters and other wildlife.
