The Quaker parrot—also called the Monk Parakeet, Quaker Parakeet, or Grey-breasted Parakeet—is a small South American parrot with a big personality. Its intelligence, talking ability, and affectionate nature make it appealing as a companion bird, but its noise, chewing, long lifespan, and need for daily interaction can overwhelm an unprepared owner.
In the wild, Myiopsitta monachus is equally distinctive. Unlike most parrots, it constructs large communal stick nests instead of depending mainly on tree cavities. Feral colonies have become established in several countries, including parts of the United States, where ownership and wildlife rules vary by jurisdiction.

Quaker parrots belong to the parrot family Psittacidae. Published descriptions of subspecies do not completely agree, so it is best not to treat one fixed subspecies count as settled without naming the taxonomic authority.
Appearance and identification
An adult Quaker parrot is mostly bright green, with a gray face, throat, and breast. Its long, tapered tail and compact, sturdy body give it a different outline from a budgerigar or cockatiel. The hooked bill is pale pink to brown, the legs are gray, and blue flight feathers can show when the bird is flying.

Males and females generally look alike. A visual guess is not a reliable way to sex one; DNA testing or a veterinary sexing method is needed when the bird’s sex matters for breeding or medical decisions.
Color mutations bred in captivity may look very different from the wild-type green bird. A blue or other mutation is still a Quaker parrot, but unusual coloring should not be confused with a separate species.
Personality and behavior
These parrots are alert, clever, energetic, and intensely social. A well-socialized individual may form a close bond with its household and learn words, phrases, whistles, and household sounds. Speech ability varies, however; buying one with the expectation that it must become a talker is a recipe for disappointment.
They are also loud. A Quaker may call repeatedly at dawn, dusk, when left alone, or when it hears activity elsewhere in the home. Its volume is manageable for some families but unsuitable for apartments with strict noise rules or owners who need a quiet bird.

Quaker parrots need supervised time outside the cage, training, play, and objects they can safely destroy. Without those outlets, boredom can contribute to screaming, biting, feather damage, or other unwanted behavior. Chewing is normal parrot behavior, so provide bird-safe wood, shreddable paper, foraging toys, and regularly rotated activities rather than trying to eliminate it.
In nature, they use their feet to hold food and may use the bill as a climbing aid. They form socially monogamous pairs, with mutual preening and bill-grasping displays among their bonding behaviors.

Where Quaker parrots live in the wild
The species is native to lowland South America. Its natural habitats include dry, open country such as savannas with scattered trees. It has also adapted remarkably well to human-altered landscapes.
Monk parakeets are unusual among parrots because they can persist through temperate-zone winters. Introduced populations commonly use cities and suburbs, where ornamental trees, food sources, and tall structures provide suitable resources.
The unusual communal nest
Quaker parrots build large stick nests rather than relying primarily on tree cavities. They may attach them to trees, palms, utility poles, fire escapes, silos, or power transformers. Several pairs can live in one connected nest structure, with each pair occupying its own chamber.
A typical structure may contain up to 20 chambers, while exceptional colonies can contain more than 200 nests. Birds continually add to and repair the structure, which can function as a year-round roost. Very large nests may grow beyond 5 feet across and weigh a ton or more, creating obvious safety and infrastructure concerns.
Quaker parrots are not accurately described as the only parrots that build stick nests. Together with closely related Cliff Parakeets, they are the only parrot species known to build stick nests and nest colonially.
Breeding and young
A breeding pair typically lays five to eight white eggs. Incubation lasts about 24 days, and young commonly leave the nest at around six to eight weeks. In a colony, the presence of other pairs does not mean each bird shares one breeding chamber; the communal structure contains separate spaces for individual pairs.

Breeding should not be undertaken casually in a home environment. It requires suitable housing, an avian veterinarian, a plan for the chicks, and confirmation that local law permits breeding and sale. Nesting behavior can also make a normally friendly bird territorial.
What do Quaker parrots eat?
A seed-only diet is not adequate. Seeds and nuts are calorie-dense and can contribute to obesity and nutritional disease when they form the main food. A better general approach is:
- a nutritionally complete formulated pellet as the dietary foundation, when tolerated;
- a variety of appropriate vegetables and other fresh plant foods;
- limited fruit because of its higher sugar content;
- seeds and nuts as treats or training rewards rather than the staple diet; and
- fresh, clean water available every day.
Move a seed-dependent bird to pellets gradually rather than removing familiar food abruptly. Weigh the bird during the conversion. Merck Veterinary Manual advises contacting a veterinarian if weight loss exceeds 10 percent.
Never assume that a food is safe because another bird eats it. Avoid toxic foods such as avocado, chocolate, alcohol, and caffeinated drinks, and ask an avian veterinarian about any uncertain ingredient.

VCA lists approximately 2 × 2 × 3 feet as a minimum cage size for a Quaker parrot. That is a baseline, not an ideal target. Choose the largest safe cage the household can accommodate, with enough room for the bird to move between perches without its tail hitting the bars or toys.
Use varied, bird-safe perches rather than one uniform dowel. Keep food and water dishes away from areas contaminated by droppings, clean the cage routinely, and inspect toys for loose parts, frayed fibers, or swallowed pieces. Quakers are persistent chewers and can destroy soft materials quickly.

Plan for daily supervised out-of-cage exercise in a bird-proofed room. Close windows and doors, cover or remove hazards, and keep the parrot away from ceiling fans, hot cookware, open water, toxic plants, electrical cords, and other pets. Nonstick cookware and some heated products can release fumes dangerous to birds, so discuss household safety with an avian veterinarian.
Arrange an examination with an avian veterinarian at least annually. Birds often conceal illness, so changes such as reduced appetite, altered droppings, sleeping more, breathing difficulty, weight loss, or a sudden quietness deserve prompt veterinary attention.
How long do Quaker parrots live?
Captive Quaker parrots commonly live 20–30 years. This is a long-term commitment, not a short pet cycle. Before adopting, consider who will care for the bird during travel, illness, housing changes, or financial difficulty. A written future-care plan is sensible for any parrot likely to outlive its first owner.

Many established U.S. colonies trace back to escaped or released pet birds beginning in the 1960s. Populations occur in a number of metropolitan areas, including parts of Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois, California, Louisiana, Arizona, and Rhode Island; that list is not exhaustive.
The species is often labeled nonnative or invasive outside its native range, but its effects differ by location. Agencies have raised concerns about possible competition with native wildlife, infrastructure damage, and agricultural impacts, while noting that the scale of those effects is not fully understood. USDA material does not support the older claim that monk parakeets have caused widespread, confirmed crop devastation throughout the United States; widespread damage had not materialized as anticipated.
Wild populations should not be treated like escaped pets. Do not capture, relocate, remove a nest, or release a companion bird without first contacting the relevant wildlife authority. Large nests on electrical equipment can present real hazards and should be handled by the utility or authorized wildlife professionals.

Are Quaker parrots legal to own?
There is no single nationwide answer. Some states or local jurisdictions prohibit or restrict Quaker parrots, while others allow personal ownership but regulate breeding, sale, exhibition, transport, or release. Check the current rules in your state, county, and city before buying or moving one.
For example, Florida classifies monk parakeets as Class III wildlife. A permit is required for exhibition or sale there, but not for possession as a personal pet. That Florida rule should not be generalized to other states. USDA classifications also do not replace state or local wildlife regulations.
Is a Quaker parrot a good pet?
It can be an excellent companion for an owner who wants an interactive, trainable, vocal bird and can commit to decades of care. It is a poor match for someone seeking a quiet, low-maintenance pet or a bird that can spend most of the day alone.
- Check legality first. Confirm ownership, transport, breeding, and sale rules.
- Meet the bird in person. Listen to its normal volume and observe how it reacts to handling.
- Budget for setup and veterinary care. Include a large cage, toys, quality food, and annual avian examinations.
- Plan daily interaction. Enrichment and supervised exercise must fit your routine.
- Prepare for the lifespan. Make arrangements for the bird’s care if your circumstances change.
FAQ
Are Quaker parrots and Monk Parakeets the same bird?
Yes. Quaker parrot, Monk Parakeet, Quaker Parakeet, and Grey-breasted Parakeet are common names for Myiopsitta monachus.
Can Quaker parrots talk?
Many can learn human words and phrases, but speech ability varies. They are also naturally vocal, so talking potential should not be the only reason to choose one.
How big does a Quaker parrot get?
Adults are about 11–13 inches (28–33 cm) long including the tail and typically weigh around 80–150 g.
Are Quaker parrots illegal?
Rules vary by state and locality. Some jurisdictions restrict or prohibit them, while others allow personal ownership. Verify current local rules before purchase, transport, breeding, sale, or release.
The Bottom Line
Quaker parrots are intelligent, social, long-lived birds with unusual communal nesting behavior and substantial care requirements. Their talking ability and affectionate personality are balanced by noise, chewing, daily attention, specialized veterinary needs, and possible legal restrictions. Check the law first, meet the individual bird, and make sure you can provide a safe home for the next 20–30 years.
